Re: A Geordie trying the Newcastle Diet

Saturday May 12 - day 20

Lunch
Pre BG 5.0 + 2 hours 4.8

Dinner
Pre BG 4.8+ 2 5.0

Supper
Pre BG 5.1 +2 4.7

Fluid

Water 4.5L
Tea black 2 cups

60 minutes, some easy, some medium, some hard.

Verdict after day 20

Woke up as usual feeling great. Had a cup of black tea, and then my usual squash. Postman arrived bringing some water flavourings I had ordered so tried them out. Initially didn't associate the yukky feeling with them, but suddenly realised I was drinking so much more water than usual it was quite shocking. It wasn't even because the WF were super nice, they were ok(ish) but nothing more. The brain fog ache in my muscles, fatigue and lethargy were really bad, and left me feeling quite incapacitated. I stopped the WF and went back to just squash, as I have been since day 1, but even now I still feel really horrid. The thirst today has been unreal. I left the glass I had used for the WF on the counter, and soon saw a rim of white powder drying. I tasted it and it seemed to be mainly sodium. Sodium was what my GP said I could lack if not careful, but I think I have had a real sodium overload today. Anyway, lesson learned. The WF are in the bin, and I am back to squash. I have contacted the company, waiting for them to call me back.

Eating and exercise has been a real major struggle today, eating not as bad as yesterday, but it could be due to the sheer volume of water I have taken on board. I am just now hoping I can excrete the sodium, or whatever has caused this and be back to normal tomorrow. Really do feel very grotty.

Re: A Geordie trying the Newcastle Diet

Thank you Paul, TP and Catza. I strongly recommend people stick to just water. My daughter tried the WF, just one glass and within a few minutes had a headache. We both used the exact amount stated on the tub, but for whatever reason, it gave us both very unpleasant side effects. Still feel yuk, but it's bed time now, so will hopefully sleep it off. The water in my stomach is sploshing really bad, and I am so bloated. Horrible!

Re: A Geordie trying the Newcastle Diet

That sounds like a horrible way to find out something seemingly so innocuous can have such a bad effect on you. <hugs>

I do tend to take my 'Corporation Pop' straight, albeit chilled, but occasionally when I feel like kicking the boat out I give it a quick squirt of Jif Lemon Juice. I also put a couple of squirts in ice cubes which are great to use in my iced tea.

Sunday May 13 - day 21

Lunch
Pre BG 5.0 + 2 hours 5.6

Dinner
Pre BG + 2 Dinner shake and BG's missed

Supper
Pre BG 4.8 +2 5.0

Fluid

Water 3L
Tea black 1 cups

30 minutes, all easy.

Verdict after day 21

Another really hard day. I think I may be coming down with something. Appetite zero, forced down lunch and supper shake, dinner shake no chance. I have just wanted to lie on the couch with a hot water bottle all day, but temperature has been really high. Feeling very sick, brain fog, fatigue, basically just feel like hell.

confessions

None at all this week again. I have stuck to 3 shakes a day and nothing else at all except no sugar squash. I did miss one shake today, but apart from that I've been 100%

End of week three, ended on a bit of a low point, sadly.

[edit to add] I have just been sick, so it looks like I may well have a bug. Also, forgot to mention, I have been constipated for two days, which could be why I feel grotty and fatigued. Seems a shame as I have been so well all through this.

Tomorrow is another day, and it's weigh in day...

It is sad. I shall stick to my squash, at least I know that is ok. :D

Re: A Geordie trying the Newcastle Diet

Bit worried about quantities of fluids you are taking, too much can reduce sodium levels and have other effects.Yesterday I took in slightly over 2L,not counting what was in the food I ate.Normal day for exercise.

Also exhaustion, fatigue.lethargy don't fit with this stage of your diet, although could be explained if you are ill.At some stage your weight will bottom out,any chance you have used up available fat reserves?

Hi Frank,

With just shakes, the recommended amount of water is 3L but I have had days where I have had less, other days more, but I do try to stay at around 3L.

I have not felt the fatigue and lethargy since beginning low carb, and less so since the ND. I have lost quite a lot of inches from my arms and legs, so the only fat store I have left is my stomach. I still do have fat stores there.

Weight loss this week is 5lb however it's fluctuated wildly this week with a weight loss of 10lb by Saturday from last Monday, so 5lb added since Saturday, which I suspect is water retention due to TOTM. However my weight has been up and down since Friday, which does suggest TOTM. I have lost 4 inches from my waist since last Monday. According to MFP a 5lb weight loss coupled with a four inch waist loss equates to 9.2lb weight loss??

Feeling much, much better today. I think being sick last night shifted what was making me feel so yukky. Still not as bouncy as usual, but much better than I have been.

Re: A Geordie trying the Newcastle Diet

Thank you ladies, it's been a tough couple of days, but feel I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. I am certain by tomorrow I will be back to my old self completely. (((TP and Catza))).

My only wish would be that your dang banana was suffering with lack of normal bounce as well.

Monday May 14 - day 22

Lunch
Pre BG 5.5 + 2 hours 5.5

Dinner
Pre BG 4.7 + 2 4.7

Supper
Pre BG 4.9 +2 5.0

Fluid

Water 2.5L
Tea black 0 cups

Exercise

60 minutes, easy, medium and hard, but have really pushed the harder (and don't I know it :D )

Verdict after day 22

I had a manic morning, and a meeting this afternoon, so didn't get any exercise done until I started between my dinner shake and the +2 hour reading. I did most of it then, the rest came after my +2 dinner reading and before my supper +2 reading. As I am feeling so much better today, I did really push the exercise, and as always I feel so amazing for doing it.

It's such a relief to feel well again, the 48 hours or so when I felt so sick were horrid, but now am back to my old self again.

I have found myself thinking about proper food a LOT today. It seems no matter what I do or where I go I can see smell or even sense food and it's driving me mad. I am seriously counting down the days until next Monday when I begin solid food again, and am even going so far as to plan my menu's for next week. I NEED solid food now. Three weeks of just liquid food is getting really hard now. I won't cave in, but I know this week is going to be hard.

Confession

I had a meeting today and was offered a coffee, I accepted, but did only have a small amount of milk. I have to say it was bl**dy lovely

[edit to add] Super +2

Re: A Geordie trying the Newcastle Diet

Nice to hear that our paragon can fall off the wagon. :D Glad to hear you have managed to get exercising again.

I had a similar thing yesterday but mine ended up unsettling me. I had done my +2 at 9:00am and recorded 5.2 and then went on a leisurely plant shopping expidition. At 11:00am I bought a mug of coffee to warm me up, hardly any milk and no sugar. Got home and did my normal pre-lunch reading at 12:30pm and it was 6.5 <gulp> dismissed that and retested and it was 6.6. +2, after a couple of slices of home cooked chicken, it was down to 4.9. I give up!!!

Oh indeed I can and did. I can say I am still on a fluid only diet though

BG readings quite often are just not sensible at all. We can do all we need to, even go above and beyond, and still they don't behave. It is just one of the most frustrating things about this condition. I know if I get a reading above 5.5 I think "how the hell is that happening?" No rhyme or reason, and I think as long as we are all doing all we can, we have to accept these small blips.

Re: A Geordie trying the Newcastle Diet

I know my blip yesterday was caffeine. Never thought at the time that it would have such a bad effect on my figures. I changed to decaf tea and coffee a long time ago on the advice of my GP as I drank so much of the stuff that I was going hyper and having problems winding down and sleeping. Never thought it would impact on my diabetes so my regular testing has reinforced my need to stay away from the 'hard stuff'.

It's so odd how our bodies change. I used to drink around 10 cups of coffee a day, then I switched to tea (my beloved Earl Gray) which I have black, and drank around the same. Now I have at most three cups of black tea a day, and the rest sugar free squash. If someone said I would be like this six months ago, I would have said they were mad.

I must admit, the coffee yesterday sent my hyper, and I didn't sleep very well at all. No more coffee for me, especially in the evening. It didn't effect my BG, that just shows how truly different we all are.

Tuesday May 15 - day 23

Lunch
Pre BG 4.8 + 2 hours 5.1

Dinner
Pre BG 4.7 + 2 5.3

Supper
Pre BG 4.6 +2 5.2

Fluid

Water 3L
Tea black 3 cups

Exercise

30 minutes, easy and medium. Not the best day, but I read that the Government's exercise target is 30 minutes a day 5 times a week, so I am not too bothered that today was a bit of a washout.

Verdict after day 23

Completely back to normal today health wise.

I NEED solid food!! The closer I get to Monday, and some solid food, the harder it is. I was busy this afternoon, home alone and all I could smell was hot buttered toast. I was salivating, yet there was no toast. I am finding I am feeling hungry, something that has not happened before, and I am having to quell hunger pangs with water. Feeding the dogs this evening, I could easily have scoffed their food  When my daughters are eating I now have to make their dinner, then leave the dining room, I can't bare the smell of food, it's really hard. While making their dinner, I am SO tempted just to have a taste. I haven't, not once, I have not cheated at all, but I will be honest, if I can say on my Monday confessions for week four I haven't, I will be SO proud of myself, and shocked. I promised to keep this diary real, so there you have it. Food, solid food is becoming an obsession.

Roll on Monday, and dinner with the family...

Wednesday May 16 - day 24

Lunch
Pre BG 5.0 + 2 hours 5.6

Dinner
Pre BG 4.7 + 2 5.4

Supper
Pre BG 5.0 +2 5.5

Fluid

Water 3L
Tea black 3 cups

Exercise

1 hour and ten minutes, medium effort.

Verdict after day 24

Strange day figures wise. I had boundless energy, so went on the treadmill a bit more, and skipped the easy session, opting for medium all day. My figures compared to some days with less exercise are terrible. Not sure of the cause, even my FBG are slightly worse. All within the normal range, but much worse than they have been. My weight is also fluctuating wildly, some days a biggish loss, other days an add? Very odd. However, it will be interesting to see what the outcome is.

As I said, loads of extra energy that had to go somewhere, I put it on the treadmill, and also the craving for solid food and the hunger has gone again. This diet certainly shows some very strange anomalies, and as I have found out, change radically on a day to day basis.
