Back home from Cote d'Ivoire after a fairly torrid journey of about 28 hours including no more than 3 hours of fitful sleep on the plane. Started off OK, 3 1/2 hours drive to Abidjan, plenty of time for flight, nice airport, even a decent airside restaurant and had a chicken kebab, tomato and leaf salad and pepper sauce.
Then the flight was delayed for 2 hours because of a 'technical problem' inbound via Monrovia - flickering cabin lights (!) - and we didn't leave Abidjan until 1:30 in the morning. Full flight, not much sleep, but the worst thing was missing our connection to Heathrow in Brussels. They couldn't get us on the next flight because it was full and they had to prioritise passengers who had onward transatlantic flights from London, which is reasonable of course, but it meant we had 6 hours overlay in Brussels. As you can imagine pretty much the only food you can get airside in Brussels consists of pastry and/or chocolate, but outside security there were some fast food places where you could get a half-decent cheeseburger - left the bun but I did have a few chips.
When we did get to Heathrow about 4 yesterday afternoon we hit the delays caused by the new security ramp-up, then it was a rush on Heathrow Express to get to Paddington for a train back to Devon. Got home in time for a quick meal and the second half of the World Cup final.
I would have stayed in bed this morning but brilliantly I had an appointment at 8:30 for my first set of blood tests (hence the quick dinner to get 11 hours of fasting in) since diagnosis! Needless to say my fasting levels are haywire at the moment but that shouldn't affect the HbA1c. On the up side I've lost another 1.2 kg in the last 10 days - no doubt the tramping miles in airport terminals has helped there.
Not planning on doing much else today, especially not work. I'll do a bit on the rower, doze and catch up on the Tour de France highlights and the Archers Omnibus!
