I’ve had diabetes now for 2 years. Ashamed to say but I don’t know when I last controlled my blood sugars. I haven’t been going to my specialist appointments and I’m completely fed up with it. I know what I am doing is wrong I notice the blurred vision and exhaustion when my blood sugar is high and the weight loss but I still eat what I want drink when I want.
I have a rare type that isn’t type 1 or type 2 and just feel like no one understands it when you get the are you type 1 or type 2 I find it exhausting. I have had someone say there’s no other types or diabetes you must just be type 2, is it normal to feel so protective over that like it’s your identity! I just want a normal life where my diabetes doesn’t get in the way, I don’t think I know many people that think it’s a serious disease or that I should be changing how I am living my life! I’m not after attention but how do I get over this and take it for the serious Condition it is?

I think that hving taken the decision to post shows that you are taking it for the serious disease it is, but are maybe struggling with what to do about it? Or what to do first?
I think we all have different approaches to making a change -
1) some people do best going “hell for leather” and either make loads of changes or a few radical (some would say extreme) changes straight away which can make it difficult to pinpoint which change was the change / leel of change that made a difference
2) some othe people need to do lots of thinking / planning before making a change which can endlessly put off making any actual
What is your attitude to change? What do you thn / fear woud happen if you decided t attend a specialist appointment or eclude some foods / drinks
I think Im a bit of both but if Im finding it hard to startsomthing, then Ill often choose 1 thing to do differently, see the effect then choose to add another change intothe mix

Well, on this forum we all know there are many types of diabetes apart from 1 or 2. There's LADA, 3c, different types of MODY, RH and I'm probably forgetting some types. Have you heard of diabetes burn-out? It's pretty common in all types.
One of the nasty things of diabetes is that having high bg a lot of the time makes you feel like s**t in general. Feeling like s**t doesn't help with finding motivation to work on your health. Still, can you think of things that might help you taking a bit more care of yourself? We're happy to support you.
If you can't, at the moment, it might help to visit your GP to explain how you're feeling. Talking to a psychologist might help.
All the best!

I can understand your feeling but to post on here shows to me that you want to change. If you can find a way of starting the change it will become a way of life in no time at all, the same as it is now for you. I have a friend, she did not know she had T2 until she had a major heart attack but now is too late, she has done the damage and is on loads of meds. Have a look at all the success stories on this site and talk to lots of people on here to get encouragement. They are all very willing to help but some how please find the way to change, a way to get up and go!! Make it a challenge to see what you can achieve!

Hi @hisjen84 It's pretty normal regardless of type to feel this way, so don't be hard on yourself, are you supposed to be taking insulin to control your blood glucose levels ? Do you feel burn out or in denial of your condition and living as if it's not really happening ? What do you think has triggered this current way of thinking ?

What is important is to start taking control so you can start to feel better, having better control means feeling better mentally and more able to cope with life in general, I always try and view life in small steps rather than tackling the whole thing, so perhaps pick up your meter now and do a test, at least you will have a starting point, don't be afraid to ask for help either, you will be amazed at the support you get if you just ask.

Hi thanks for all the replies I have transient neo natal and it’s treated with tablets.
I would say that at the minute I am living like my diabetes doesn’t exist. My specialist said the longer I Control my blood sugars the longer it will be until I need insulin.
I find trying to control it with tablets is a mind field and I just don’t want to deal with it at all.

Hi, I’m pretty sure that there are lots of people here who like me were diagnosed without knowing anything was wrong, felt well and didn’t have any typical symptoms or maybe started to get some little tale tell signs but the diagnosis followed almost immediately. I’m also pretty sure that like me they were shocked, upset and possibly horrified, I was, I cried and felt really upset for a few days. I think I also grieved for the loss of the good health I had had that had now disappeared. After my initial shock I thought about my diagnosis, i thought about what I knew and tried to find answers to what I didn’t. This in some ways was more shocking than my result, I very quickly realised that if I was to have any chance of avoiding all the potential horrible things happening to me I needed to take control. It was down to me, all the tears and why me’s wasn’t going to help me, no one was going to be able to do it for me. Probably my biggest motivation was that I didn’t want to have to take meds and inject myself, delaying making a start might snatch that option from me, also I have a partner, 2 daughters and 3 beautiful grandchildren that I want to be here for for as long as I can. Life is for living and we only get one, this isn’t a dress rehearsal please try to do what you need to do, baby steps are fine, one day at a time is fine, you can do it, you owe it to yourself. Good luck, I hope you find the motivation you need and support to do what you need to do.

Hi @hisjen84 ,
Your predicament is so typical of so many diabetics I have known , including myself. Unfortunately diabetes is more of a condition than a disease and there is no one way to fix it. I have friends and relatives who just pop their pills and go about eating with scant regard for their dietary restrictions. And they seem to fare ok. So being a foodie and having a sweet tooth I wonder many times whether this diagnosis, treatments and doctors are really the right thing we are doing, and should I bother with them at all.
This is the logic that has gradually formed in my mind...First let us not focus on giving the right name to this condition, which I am sure even doctors don't know well. ARE WE ABLE TO FUNCTION TO OUR OPTIMUM IN OUR DAILY LIFE.? When we are able to notice the difference in our energy levels , eyesight, etc and know that we have problem with carb metabolism ( which is what diabetes is mostly about), it is better to deal with it pragmatically instead of letting things slide. For e.g... I know that I can have a bit of cake or choclat and my bg will rise by 2points. If I indulge in a lot of the same thing I will have miserable time for a couple of days atteast till my bg comes down. I am responsible for my family and have to be there for them as healthy as possible. Remember, when we are sick we are also affecting our loved ones.So I take this as a motivation. When I do exercise, I tell myself that it is good for my over all health . You can also set yourself goals and treats for achieving them.No doubt managing diabetes is an uphill task and giving up seems so tempting. But the relief I felt when my doctor said that I can manage with meds alone IF I bring down my weight and eat the right way, was so great that I remind myself that I don't want injections and forgoing some indulgences is a little price to pay .Many on this forum have great stories of diabetes in remission. Start making changes slowly, I am grateful there is advancement in diabetes treatment which was not the case decades ago.If we do our bit , the meds will do theirs. All the best!
