Under 20g of carbs a day????

20g a day even for a type 2 diabetic on diet and exercise in my opinion is a big reduction in quality of life....;)

Why?

I've been under 20g of carbs for nearly three years now!
How can you say that?
My quality of life and more importantly my health is brilliant!
I have a full working life, I travel the country following my team, I socialise, I have a great family and everything I need to live my life now because I'm full of energy!
I'm not restricted because I've accepted that to live my life the way I have to, means being under 20g all the time!

Because you can doesn't mean that we are deprived of eating rubbish that only makes me really ill!

I'm better off now than twenty years ago!

The presence of the following emoji: ;) was an indication of humour and sarcasm in my comment......

I personally could do it, but I choose not to as I enjoy food, thats all....

I certainly don't believe everyone feels the same way I do.....:)

It's entirely possible. But your food choices are extremely limited with such a low allowance.

I had three pork sausages for breakfast this morning, so that would be me at around 20g carbs too...

I had 3 sausages this morning and they came to 3g carbs total. I did under 20g for nearly a year and it was fairly easy. having said that I accept if you eat fruit and high carb sausages you may have a different opinion.

I'm well under 20gs a day, bacon eggs, also known as omelettes. Tuna with mayo for lunch, chicken and veg for tea.
Its relatively easy you just have to get out of the mindset of cereal and butties for lunch.

You have to weigh it up.
I feel ill - heavy limbed, brain fogged, lethargic, endlessly hungry, morose and generally awful if I eat more than about 50 g carbs a day. And then there are the regular hypos. I can get away with it for a day or two, then the misery just mounts up.

I feel better if I eat under 40 g carbs a day.

I feel FAB if I eat under 20 g carbs a day.

So, for me, the quality of life is dependent on keeping my carbs down to below 40, preferably 20g carbs a day.

I appreciate that there are other options (like meds) available, but those don't appeal. There was a survey quoted by doc on a televised lecture (I can find it if anyone wants to view it), where type 2 diabetics on meds were asked about their level of health and wellbeing. The conclusion was that taking more than one blood glucose lowering med was the equivalent to having a mild stroke - in terms of quality of life.

So, I get to choose, feel bad on carbs, feel bad on drugs, or feel GREAT on very low carbs. For me, it is a no brainer.

Have you tried going to 20g carbs? I think you might find it interesting! I am not hungry. and apart from potato and bread there is very little difference to ordinary eating as far as I am concerned. Apart from being able to eat cheese and cream that is.

Aye they weren't the classiest of sausages, hence the higher than ideal carb content:)

I don't eat fruit but even that in itself doesn't reflect on the heavy limitations that <20g carbs per day has on your diet. It is undeniable that you have to make heavy sacrifices to play that game.

I'm not condoning that dietary choice, in fact - I admire those who can stick the LCHF approach. But, fruit or not fruit - your diet vs mine (circa 180g-200g carbs per day) - there is no question who's has the biggest restrictions and lesser food options. That was the point of my post which you quoted.

Some people are claiming to achieve under 20g of carbs a day. Is this possible? I have just had an apple and a very small spoon of yoghurt for breakfast and it came to 19.6g!
I am amazed how easy it is - here's 2 weeks worth of menus 3 meals a day and all 14 days are 20g or less. Delicious food too.

Do I feel deprived eating roast chicken, steak, salmon, eggs and cheese, fresh salads and modest amounts of really tasty vegetables?
Can't say I do really - though since I have been losing weight so easily I have added more low sugar fruits to slow down to 2lb a week.
I lose weight easily eating low carb so wouldn't want to cause myself problems such as cramps or dizziness, but 20 gm of carb per day means three or four good meals a day, just don't make poor choices such as an apple for breakfast, and yoghurt as a food is really over rated, in my opinion. Cream in coffee is a much better option.

Once you have been in Keto for a while you do not consider your diet restrictive more a diet of liberation. liberated from the confines of medication and illness. I do however take your point.

To be or not to be? That is the question?

To be in ketosis or not?

To be in good health or not?

To live longer or not?

To be working or not knowing what is going on?

To be free from anxiety or not?

To be happy or not?

To be with my great grandchild or not?

To be 20 stone or not (12 stone now)?

To be 20gms or not?

To have that choice or not? (I don't)

To be or not to be, that is, the question?

I live the life I love!
To love the life I live!

Don't forget the roast chicken.
I buy a 1 Kg pack of chicken thighs and toss them into my 'Actifry' for 45 minutes. It is worth buying one of the hot air fryers just to do chicken thighs. When done the skin is crispy and the meat moist and delicious. It cooks lamb chops or beef and onions or even casseroles, stir fries etc - even a bag of frozen low carb veges with a little stock and butter added - but the chicken...

Oh yum......we have had them so often since you first told me about then. And the skins don't forget the crispy skins.

I've been 20 g and misread often less than 20 g and my quality of life is so much better!! I love my food.
Bf 1/2 avocado with a few celery chunks
Lunch is protein and avocado with a few chopped veg
Dinner is avocado protein and steamed veg

I live my lamb chops / steak or fish avocado and Brussels sprouts.
I have a good variety of proteins and veggies as well as fats.

Haven't missed bread in eons ( though I do remember liking it ) I'd prefer to put my sandwich toppings on a piece of lettuce. Cold and crunchy.

I need to look into that Actifry. And I too adore chicken thighs!!!actually I adore all my proteins. I'd take a bunless burger over chips any day

Crispy bacon. creamy scrambled eggs, smoked salmon. crispy duck. roast pork, crackling, roast chicken. fillet steak mushrooms in creamy pepper sauce. endless varieties of cheese. coffee with cream, rich greek yogurt and berries. skate wing fried in butter..fresh salads and veggies.. I could go on for ages.
20g carbs a day... am I deprived.. hell no!

How could a piece of bread or some bland rice be better than all you have mentioned!!!! Yum!!!! I'm drooling for lamb chop dinner now in mushroom gravy!!!

I've never counted my carbs. Haven't had potatoes since diagnosed, nor bread, pasta, rice or cake. Breakfast - full fat Greek yogurt, blueberries, walnuts and milled flax seed. Lunch - prawns or tuna with full fat mayo, few plum toms and cloud bread. Dinner - any meat, 1 Aldi cumberland sausage, salmon or sea bass, a big mushroom and veg with cheese over the top and blueberries & double cream for dessert. I had never snacked in my life. I drink coffee with a small amount of single cream. I have lost 4 stone which has been easy now in size 10 clothes and my HbA1c is 41 (normal).

Wish I had known about this way of eating before.
