What have you eaten today? (Low carb forum)

I’ve just looked at the package of the Hotel Chocolate 100% dark Ecuador batons Mr C got me yesterday. These aren’t the same as those I’ve had previously. They say 0 carbs!!!!
Looked on website and it’s the same 0 carbs. This can’t be right can it? I’m buying the shop out if it is.

They did have carbs on it previously which I queried because it didn't make sense on 100% batons. I can't find the reply but it was something to do with full carbs/net carbs which to be honest still didn't make sense as the fibre content is high. So net carbs you're into negative carbs territory. To be fair I can't eat a lot of them anyway and they have no effect on my BGs - palpitations that's another matter! Sugar content is negligible.

Noon now and my BG has gone up to 11.5. I know there is a dawn phenomenon but it's not dawn any longer. Is this how it's supposed to go?
No easy answer. When my BGs throw a strop and the liver goes into overdrive, I've seen it be late afternoon sometimes before I get a downturn. Other times it's just a case of eat sometime small to put DP into reverse. It goes eventually.

Having tasted both these and the 100% drops, the batons are more bitter, so perhaps slightly less than the 8.2g carb /100g of the drops?

You know it’s windy when there’s waves on the canal. Think today’s walk also qualifies as resistance training due to the strong headwinds that almost had me off my feet. Clocked up 41k steps walking from the Medichecks lab on Wimpole Street to Paddington and then home via the length of the Regents Canal, the Thames and various parks. Much harder going than usual and ready for bed already.

Bloods involved fasting so nothing before I left. Once home NE1 was a pork rack chop marinated in olive oil, garlic and thyme cooked in the air fryer with some halloumi chips. The halloumi chips are to die for. Still hungry an hour later so NE2 was a bag of Parmesan Whisps. There may yet be more.

Hmm maybe that’s the way to look at it then - if it doesn’t affect BG then why worry? That suits my fairly slapdash approach to all this. I always hated calorie or ‘Points’ counting, I can’t be bothered with weighing and measuring accurately so I’ll just try to not be greedy with them ( sadly I can eat a lot of them!)
I’ll let you know their reply and see if it matches yours.
The full carbs/ net carbs thing does make my head spin at times. I always forget which is the good way.

Ah halloumi chips, thanks for the reminder. I was wondering what to have with our lamb chops this evening. Did you do them a la @Brunneria for 20 mins?

Was 15 minutes - put them in with the chop. 200 degrees. If it wasn’t for the fact that some stuck to the basket (which therefore needs washing), I’d be having some more. Yummy.

Sounds perfect, thanks. Are you feeling happy and rested now after your marathon walk and some good grub?

Just received a reply from HC coo!

Thank you for your recent communication with Hotel Chocolat.

After reviewing your query regarding the carbohydrate content of the 100% Dark Chocolate Batons - Rare & Vintage with our technical team, I am happy to confirm that the nutritional information given is correct.

I do appreciate that you have to ensure the information provided is correct due to your health condition and that this may seem unusual, however rest assured that the data provided is up to date.

A brief explanation for the carbohydrate content being 0.00g is that a different type of Cocoa Bean is used when manufacturing this product.

I do apologise for any confusion caused and if you require any further information, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards,

Abi

Happy and exhausted more like. Drank more than 2 litres of water while out but don’t think it was enough. Had a very large glass of iced water with lime juice squeezed into it plus some added pink salt when I got back. May have to have another.

But that can’t be right as fat + protein + fibre = 94.1. That leaves about 6g for carbs (assuming the other figures are right).

Trying out my performance when "fasting" so had nothing after about 8 pm yesterday until 2.30 pm today - apart from tea. Spent most of the morning baking with granddaughter but didn't even feel tempted. So at 2.30 I had some cold, roast chicken and some grapefruit juice which GD had poured for herself by mistake, thinking it was orange juice.

In a while I will have some sardines and hope to leave it at that. I actually don't feel that hungry.

I found it odd that my BG rose from 9.4 first thing, through 11.7 at midday and then started to fall through 11 to (now) 8.3. I thought it would drop quite rapidly, once it started dropping. The metabolism is a mysterious thing!

? I’m not following. Carby water?!

I was hoping the missing weight to make up the 100g was water. If you look at a can of soup for instance, the carb, protein, fat, fibre weight doesn’t add up to 100g either so I’ve always assumed whatever weight is missing from the 100g is water but Im probably being optimistically naive!

CWC and TWAM this morning.
Lunch was a cheese and asparagus omelette with salad and olive oil. 2 of @Goonergal ‘s recipe choc nut squares.
Dinner - I feel a bit of a copycat - 2 lamb chops ( garlic and thyme marinade) 2 chipolatas, halloumi chips ( airfryer obvs) and salad. Then 3 of the 100% chocolate batons - whatever their carb value turns out to be.

A ridiculous thing happened today - in the Coop there ware no avocados, I asked and an obliging chap went to look out the back - he came back with 2 boxes so all good. In the checkout queue he found me again and said he was sorry but I couldn’t have the avocados after all as they were out of date. They were perfectly ripe and perfect. I said I didn’t mind about the date but he said no, they weren’t allowed to let me have them! Now I could understand this rule if it was meat or fish but for vegetables!!! What an absolute waste. He replaced them with some in date ones which of course were rock hard. Sigh.

Goonergal, when I first did the Tandoori dish< the marinade the chicked (in my case) was cooked in had welded itself to the AF shelf it had been sitting on. It took ages to soak off (the shelf/grills are stainless), which irritated me.

Since then, a couple of time, where I have felt there'd be a repeat, I have scrucnched up a piece of tin foil to creat a rouch trivet and cooked the meat on top of it. The air still circulates really well as the dips in the scrunching facilitate air flow. if you need to do more than one batch (or are as lazy as me!), it could be worth giving it a go.

Tonight, I will be making lake of yoghurt, and tomorrow, there will be a bucket of clotted cream on the agenda. MrB is absolutely hooked on the stuff. I have been known to help him out with it a bit sometimes too. :)
