What was your fasting blood glucose? (full on chat)

Hello all,

I'm new to this and I don't know where to start.

So on the 1st of July I went to hospital as I was getting chest pains so they checked me and everything was OK. The nurse did a random glucose and it was 21! What a shock. So the next day I immediately went on a keto diet and IF (after Dr jason fung and other ppl I searched on youtube) and within a month my numbers started to drop (my sis had GD and gave me her tester) by the end of the month I was getting readings in the 5s 6s and occasional 4s. But for the last week I've noticed more readings back in the 7s and 6s and some 5s. I'm worried I'm going backwards :(

I was 159kg on 1st July and now I am 141kg so I've lost 18kg in less than 6 weeks but I've got a long way to go.

I havnt officially been diagnosed but sure I am T2. I also have fatty liver.

Has anyone experienced a slight rise like this? Then it gets better? Does it need time?

I'm not on any medication except vitamins and Berberine as I want to avoid medication. Plus I feel like constant checking is driving me insane.

Today's fasting at 8am was 6.5 but I do get DP and after exercise it's been rising to 7s (which rarely did that a few weeks ago)

6.5 in the morning is better than I’ve been managing so well done! I’m early in the process too, but was diagnosed two years ago ish. I am new to this but this is my understanding so far. I too have found it difficult to combat DP. For me, whether or not exercise reduces BG seems to depend on when I do the exercise. If I do it well after BG has started to rise due to DP, or the other two regular times in the day it starts to rise then it tends to raise my BG. If I catch it before or not too long after it starts to rise, then it tends to lower it. I am still experimenting with food in this cycle. Some of the time, if I eat then the rise stops and then this seems like it might be a good time to do some exercise, as it might lower BG then instead of raising it? Perhaps this is too simplistic as for me it is still early days too, and as I understand it, when you first take control your BG can be a bit changeable, and the weight you are losing is fat that is being used for energy. That is the body using the stored glucose it has been saving up in fat stores, so it is releasing very regularly and keeps BG up. I welcome others perspectives on whether this sounds like a sensible interpretation of what is going on!

Hi @Jojo85 and welcome. Couple of things. You are doing something and it seems to be working - changing diet and losing some weight - great stuff. So, keep doing what you are doing. Testing - constant is not good I feel and may cause you too much anxiety. What I did: keep a food/blood sugars diary. Eat to meter readings. How? Take a fasting reading - do I feel hungry? If so, is it thirst or hunger (I mainly just drink fluids in the morning but if I get a high fasting reading then a bit of protein such as a Baby Belle cheese will probably sort that out). Meals: take a reading - do I feel hungry? If I am not hungry then I drink fluids - if I am hungry then a high reading on meter suggests I have sugar in my blood - some protein then. If reading is low - happy days - some low carb stuff with my protein. A reading two hours after I ate - is it higher or lower? What is that telling me? Right food? Too much right food? Wrong food for that reading? Check diary at the end of each week - oh! A brisk walk after a meal will help - only needs to be about 20 minutes - key word ‘brisk’ but any movement is good.
 
Good morning all from a damp Forest Heath. Welcome @Jfb123 good to see you here. As @gennepher says The D and management thereof is not one size fits all. In general your approach seems sound. Reduce carbohydrate, test before and after meals and expect the unexpected. It is a marathon not a sprint. A widely held opinion is that meals should produce a rise of no more than 2 points at two hours from first bite but some meals only show the true rise at 3 hrs, 4hrs or later. Hope that helps a little.
@Krystyna23040 - and that was a rest day? Sheesh. Now, y'all live your best lives but COVID safe ones.
 
Morning all And hi. First time posting in here. What an amazing wealth of experience, knowledge and support! Taking control of my t2. Been increasing exercise over last three weeks and last week did my first fasting mimicking diet/low carb cycle last week. I have highish FBG in the morning (around 8.5 usually) but 7.1 just now, and at present not able to get that down much. Comes down later in the day but usually have a peak around 9:30 without anything to eat before it drops a bit, then have gradual increase from about 10:30 on (even if haven’t eaten anything!) before goes down in afternoon for a bit before starting g to rise again (again even if I haven’t eaten). I am losing quite a lot of weight, about three quarters of a stone in about 3 to four weeks. From what I read in articles and forums, it takes a while to come down due to the body releasing glucose from fat stores. Does this stop when the fat has gone? I think, but am not sure, that for some ppl insulin sensitivity improves when the belly fat goes? And if you do it just right you might get some new pancreatic beta cells (the wee jobbies that make and squirt out insulin)??? Could that be too good to be true?
Hi @Jfb123 and welcome - Increasing exercise and taking control of your diet - brilliant - it does take some time but you are doing good stuff. Food/blood sugars diary may help (see my previous post) - If I have a high reading in the morning then I take a small bit of protein to try and coax it down - it gives my liver something to do if it wakes up and decides to pump too much glucose into my blood to get me ready for the day (it’s like giving an over excited dog a small treat after you get it to sit). Belly fat - inside of that there will be fat round your organs - so - keep doing what you are doing - the fat will start to be used as fuel and after a while your pancreas might change attitude and your liver will be in a happier place.
 
5 this morning. Hoping to have another good admin day today. My sister is due at 9am am and we should get loads done by the time she leaves at 12 noon. It is quite amazing that such a small business generates so much admin.

The wonder wheel of leftover chicken and gravy zapped in the Ninja came in at 4.8 this am

We had the girl in the bubble yesterday, babbling tales of who knows what with lots of pointing, chatting to water birds, staggering up the beach - that sort of thing - fabulous. Biggest story in town is that collection of garden bins will now resume after short summer recess due to lots of workers off isolating - jolly good - garden bins are the new lower house. Packing - no, not to move, but a wee toe in the water in the direction of a road trip - a few days with friends and family. Start tomorrow, back some time on Saturday - don’t forget the lateral flow tests to make sure we don’t have excess baggage (maybe). I though that you could train dogs to do all this detection stuff.

Art bit - another tree, I shall do more - what fun. Have the most wonderful Chew’s day. The koffy pot is on the go.

Thanks for your reply, I just feel like I am chasing numbers and my anxiety is thru the roof which dsnt help blood sugar. Maybe take a few days off testing lol
We just need to keep going I guess

Thanks for your reply and suggestions, I just have been so down especially when I don't see the numbers I want but I guess I need more time for sure, esp being at 140kg....plus we are in lockdown in Sydney so I feel like I'm constantly testing
I need to snap out of it and keep going

My readings can vary during the day, and it depends on what I eat, what sleep I have had, if I am stressed or not.

Thank you for your reply...I am extremely stressed which isnt helping! Maybe I need to focus on something to stop me from testing every freaking hr lol we are in lockdown in Sydney so it's hard not to keep thinking about numbers

The start of lockdown last March 2020 in Wales, UK had my readings up because I was unable to access the fresh food I needed to keep my readings down.
Try to get enough sleep. And give that stress the cold shoulder, it is virtually impossible in these Covid times I know, but every little thing you can find to alleviate the stress will help you.

Welcome to this thread.
One or several others have noticed that their blood sugars is up after exercise, but a later will drop after resting, myself included.
Frequent testing, ahh I can't say a great deal about that, but are you keeping a food diary?
It's still early days and a learning curve and for what it's worth I think you're doing well.

The bbc's work of science fiction and fantasy ( weather forecast ) is showing a good day. To believe or not, that is the question, whether to suffer etc,etc.

Stay safe, Mrs J has a dental appointment today, me and me's think her dentist is taking a big risk......

Best wishes for all students, parents and grandparents today and Thursday. Also a mention for all those teachers sweating over their "residuals." A day of extremes, shattered dreams and wonderful new opportunities from what I remember.
Generation woke seems to be prepared to offer support and succour to us Boomers who screwed up:
