Good morning everyone on what just might be quiet a pleasant rain free day here in the dark and dangerous north. 5.6 this am. Exercises done and a walk into town to post a letter planned. The grandchildren (5 out of the 6) have all gone off to ride the Sir Nigel Gresley A4 from Grosmont to Pickering and back. Children go free when gran takes them as she has a veteran staff annual pass. We made packed lunches before Mrs Miggins woke and included chocolate spread sandwiches (a cheese and tomato for Mrs Miggins) - they want to surprise her when they tuck in! Art bit - another tree with some birds. Hope your day is full of joy, well at least an egg cup full. Best finish my koffy and get moving.

A brilliant day for the grandkids!
A chilled out day for you, it seems @dunelm
Those birds are up to something...

Morning all from a sunny L.A. . That 25 hour day will have made a few children over tired for the return to school what with waking "early" and knowing what time bedtime is normally. It made me hungry last evening so I "picked" at veggies and peanut butter. Result? 9 hrs 10 mins sleep, best stress management score and most pleasing (to my mind) resting heart rate score for some time. No fbg taken as no Swipey until all scan results are in. @dunelm thanks for sharing those wonderful pieces of art these last two days. @gennepher thank you for both owls, the tale of wildlife in your immediate environment and the vids. Enjoy your day to the best of your ability.

Creative...an owl in Procreate.

Yesterday, intense alarm calls from the sparrows on and off all day. I had something to do, so stayed outside well wrapped. The sparrowhawk did at least one fly through, but got nothing. The kestrel was hovering. Then suddenly the little birds went silent and melted into the bushes. I couldn't see anything, then I looked directly upwards. A buzzard was circling above my garden. What was he hoping for? He carried on circling so I checked potting shed and garage roof but nothing there. So, a search of the undergrowth for maybe a dead animal. But nothing.

It was half four later before the buzzard stopped circling immediately above and moved away but still circling...

The little Robin, who is now resident in my garden, comes to my window as soon as daylight comes. And looks at me. So, I have to get out of bed, go outside and put some cat biscuits down. I put Jade's food down as well. I come back in, nearly trip over a small black cat, stray Amy, who appears to have slept in the bungalow last night and wants wet cat food, not the dried stuff. Then she disappears outside for the day. I stumble into the kitchen, and stray ginger cat Merlin leaps off Midnight's chair (which Merlin has claimed for his own). He also requests wet cat food. Amy and Merlin are learning to ask nicely for food, instead of snarling and hissing and clawing at me. Infinite patience is required...

I finally get back in bed with my coffee with cream, and the little Robin is waiting for me by the glass door (outside) and once he sees me he goes and takes another cat biscuit, and flies off. Moments later he is back, looking through the glass door at me again, and once I acknowledge him/or see him there he will go and take another cat biscuit...and so this goes on most of the morning...

I am just pouring a cuppa tea, and Mr Heffalump (wood pigeon) is availing himself of cat biscuits. Was he who the buzzard was after yesterday? Surely it wouldn't have been the tiny sparrows? I wouldn't like that buzzard to catch 'my' wood pigeon. He has been around the last 2 or 3 years. I have grumbled about him often enough, but he is almost like a friend now!

All the sparrows, bluetits, and pied wagtails are happily feeding...

Some starlings just flew over, and the ravens have landed in the cherry trees...

Enjoy your day.

Your owl looks rather cat-like - are they morphing under the influence of your magic garden?

6.8.
A moist miserable morning in Merseyside.
A wet weather winter in Wirral!

Fireworks on show last night for around half an hour, could see it all from my garden.
Lots of birds on footie pitches again.

Mrs L had an accident with her pills this morning as, for some reason, she put them in the bin in the front room!
I asked her why? The explanation was obtuse and less clear than mud!

Done my gas and electric readings, not bad for the time of year, it will hurt if we get a freeze!
Which hopefully will be after the government money for the time of year. And Christmas of course!
With my lot, it just can't be done on the cheap!

Listening to covid enquiry, chores to be done, shopping done first thing, as the milk disappeared from the bottle and necessary for Mrs L 's morning brew.
Eldest and DIL, the grandkids #1, #3, & #4 had covid in the house last week. Though #3 & #4 didn't test positive. Or had symptoms. Though #1, his girlfriend had it as well! He got blame.
He got the blame during lockdown as well!
It has to be the dirty beer, I think!

Gotta go, phoning housing again, cos Ciaran is on its way!

That's a great day out, I saw it in steam when I was a lad pulling an express from kings cross to Edinburgh going very fast.
The Gresley pacifics took some beating it is only right they have a named one after their designer.

Lots of sunshine and blue sky, but plenty of heavy looking clouds around. Windy as well. Bit chilly in the house - haven't poked my nose outside so what it's like out there, I have no idea.

Had my MoveMore class this morning so I'm a bit sore but still have some energy so might manage one of the list of jobs. 2nd meal of the day is already on and cooking, so there will be food to eat later in the day, even if I do run out of steam.

My b.i.l. was a bit of a train buff but my sister would not let him join the railway society and he dare not put his foot down until she got demented and then she died and then he was too old and had prostate cancer and died of it.

He told me Gresley's assistant design engineer, Stanier went from the LNER to the LMS and he took all the plans for the Gresley pacifics and designed the Stanier pacifics for the LMS and was their chief designer. Nice little earner if you can get it, but we would expect working men to be much more honest.

Thank you @ianpspurs

I had a bowl of miso soup to keep going this longer day...

Mind you up there you always can compensate by burning a Viking longship.

But then again a local farmer up here set his own new Manitou tractor on fire one summer! :)
You see what happens when the French use the name of the supreme God of the Native Americans for the Great Spirit as if they invented it.
Manitou has been identified as the same as Yahweh who was well known for spontaneous combustion.:)

Am I way off beam in thinking those MoveMore sessions are becoming just a little less painful afterwards? Either way doing them plus some jobs as well as having food for later sounds like a successful day. Peace be with you.

Still painful afterwards, Ian, but with the support of some paracetemol I can get on with my day. More energy these days though. Must be doing some good.

Good news. It would be more respectful of me to proof read my posts more carefully - sorry. As a talented baker and having a good knowledge of UK traditions have you ever made Soul Cakes? I like the attached poem/song which I had never seen before today. I also like the distinction between all Souls and All Saints day.. I may see if we can make these with normal and almond or coconut flour as a way of having an alternative to the trick or treat ghouls and "scary" event.

Never have tried to make Soul Cakes, but I must. I do have a recipe for them, but it isn't specifically low carb. All the same, each biscuit has only 1 gram of carbohydrate, so not too bad, as long as you stop at one! Must see if I can find a low carb version. Found a YouTube recording of the song by Sting. Quite gentille and a pleasant listen, but I suspect the original would have been a little rougher. Also think he may have combined more than one traditional song, but maybe this is the original and the "Christmas is a'coming" version is the copy.

EDIT: There is another version on YouTube by The O'Connors & Theiss which seems a bit more authentic. It also has the "if you haven't got a penny..." bit in it and part of another Christmas song. Now I'm confused but I suppose many of these folk songs borrowed from each other.
