HAS ANYONE EVER CHALLENGED THE NHS EAT WELL PLATE/GUIDE RE DIABETICS?

Hi. This topic has long been discussed on these forums. The main problem is the influence of the global food industry. They fund many of the university 'research' programs which keep the Professors in business. Organisations such as PHE (Public Health England) go to the universities for dietary advice and guess what they receive? Carbs are cheap and very profitable. The recent Eatwell Guide update was signed-off by a committee consisting of a majority of food industry people (the Minutes are lurking on the web if you can find them) so is totally biased. The next level problem is that NHS Choices, NICE, BDA (British Dietetic Association) etc follow PHE advice and GPs and DNs are expected to follow it. Even DUK (the .org one) followed this advice until recently when it has started to trim it back. I've complained many times to the NHS, DUK etc usually with no effect but DUK did recently give me a much more considered reply. What a strange world we live in. I feel sorry for those who take the bad NHS diet advice and don't know about these forums. The harm done is incalculable.
It makes me quite angry knowing how this cycle works. Money is the root if all evil. But even more worrying is I have spoken to my friend who was diagnosed about the same time as me. I've shared my new knowledge and advised to test to his meter 2 weeks ago. He has still not done one test. Seems happy to take the metformin and eat and drink what be wants which is what he seems to think taking these meds will allow.

I dont know to be honest, perhaps it may prove beneficial and/or worthwhile if someone was brave enough to do so? I totally agree with your excellent post, and applaud you have raised valid points within, especially re business side of Medical Industry Docs payments from the system, many points unfortunately may not be taken into account by many or even know take place or exist. Diabetes it seems now, thankfully, is beginning to be viewed in reality by more and more every day as "big business" one way or the other, people are starting to wake up to the reality.

Enjoyed your informative post. Well said, more should speak out and share as points raised within more often. thank you.
Thank you for your kind words. I wrote my post after waking in the middle of the night worrying about how things are for diabetics out there. I don't feel our little voices will be heard any time soon. It's really frustrating. But I do think we have the where with all to spread the word now with the internet. I found this life saving site via Google. My mum was not so lucky 30 years ago when she was diagnosed and put straight on insulin as a t2d. If she had a sight like this to turn to her outcome could have new so different.

Coming to this thread late but I’ve never had to question dietary advice at my surgery, because I’ve never received any! I’ve only ever seen my GP there (no Diabetes specialist nurse there apparently). I went on my education session and although there was a suggestion to cut carbs and go for lower carb foods, they fell short of recommending a level of grams of carbs per day when I asked. I go on the year anniversary update next month, I may be braver and more confident in my questioning now I am living proof that low carbing works wonders for blood sugars and weight loss! Just depends how I feel on the day but I do feel I need to spread the word!

Our PM is diabetic. Surely this is our route in. I'm going to write her a letter!!! I'm getting my complaints template out (it's a winning template....latest compensation was £140 from virgin media!!!) You can but try. We can't all be wrong on this amazing forum!

In the end, when change comes it will boil down to two things. The wonderful work of boffins like Noakes, Malhotra, Lustig, Sikaris et al and The Wisdom of Crowds.

The only way to beat Big Food is with the power of the purse. The only way to beat Big Pharma is to stay as well as we can possibly be. The only way to beat these naysayers who cite against what they term anecdotal evidence with such disdain is to grow in number until the whisper becomes a roar.

And Breathe!

The priority of the Eat Well plate is on meeting purported nutritional needs to safely support lifelong medication, not specifically targeted to reverse chronic conditions and become medication free. That is why the stake holders (pharma, food, healthcare providers) are happy because the plate balances their needs.

But what we (T2D) need is a Get Well plate that will reduce our reliance on medication. And it will be a plate that seeks to reduce our insulin load, improves our insulin sensitivity and returns us to our natural balanced cycles (wake/sleep, feed/fast).

The modern lifestyle has pushed us to operate beyond our design specs, staying awake when we should be resting, eating when we should be fasting, leading to accelerated organ failures.

That's why the pix is fuzzy I think. :D

I got a health care plan for my podiatrist a couple of weeks ago. The staff at my GP's who arranges the hcp asked me if I was following those food guidelines for T2.

Told her I was not as I was following a lower card lifestyle, she did not say anything just grinned at me.

Not only have I heard of the Eat Well Plate. I ****** went out and bought the Eat Well Plate. I did actually follow the guidlines, being careful not to overload the Eat Well Plate, making sure that the potatoes never went over the line, and had a chicken breast the size of my palm. I still put on weight and was told that I was Pre-Diabetic. The Eat Well plate is now at the back of the cupboard never to be seen or used again

Me too! Low fat everything, brown rice, pasta and bread, high fibre usually baked beans, jacket potatoes and plenty of fruit and still wondered why I never lost weight even though I was eating ‘healthily’.

Thank you for your kind words. I wrote my post after waking in the middle of the night worrying about how things are for diabetics out there. your absolutely right, our little voices not heard currently or soon, but we cant give up, the saying goes when doors close keep knocking, try try again, until someone the system the diabetes experts, so called committees, takes notice, the more voices who share knowledge of the reality the better, re areas that need changed reviewed, updated, I refer to an example, once had a client as am retired lawyer, the clients words were, I have never forgotten! "when one is not guilty, yet viewed as guilty, you know your 100% not guilty, then you are not guilty, and to get that right, you dont give up, until its right"

So, the message here is we cant give up demanding expecting more transparency and in dpeth information be provided than is taking place now.

Gained knowledge is a great tool, its how we use, it, Diabetes Industry personal opinion for what thats worth, has to get its act together, become more transparent, the medical system to produce more indepth information of Diabetes and general recommendations overall, recommend dietary changes, low carb lifestyle changes, even if that means those controlling and reversing their numbers lessen their medications, and perhaps lesser use of monitors lancets, using lifestyle changes, will result in, yes, a drop in big business, but what is more important, wanting the public to be healthier and control their insulin issues by dietary changes, or prefer they stay sick, and/or get worse, surely its time to respect listen hear accept success stories, and put out new leaflets, reviewed information update the current system of info in place, ie, more info focusing targeting first and foremost on lifestyle changes, low carb eating intermittent fasting v. medications, I am sure that would be welcomed for all.

I doubt that will happen, but we can hope....

"So we cant give up with our little voices, we must try try again until our voices are heard"

Incredible! someone needs to raise to their awareness to Oz down under, they seem to have it all wrong, need to update their knowledge and recommendations of diabetes and dietary recommendations especially.

"They seem to have it wrong" all over the world! The wheel, the plate and the pyramid are birds of a feather. Australia seems to be a leader in the fight against this dogma that is promoted and protected by Big Food and Big Pharma.

I am newly diagnosed and got handed the diet sheet on Tuesday. I'd already been self testing for two weeks and engaging with this forum. When I saw the guidelines I was gobsmacked. I felt like I should ask if they had handed me the wrong thing.

Basically, eat bread and rice and other carbs as a big chunk of your diet. No thanks!

I feel so concerned for the people who fully accept what the doctors say and blindly follow the advice of the NHS. Surely it's not right to lead them down a path that will hurt them and cost the NHS more in the long run.

Well said, I totally agree with your viewpoint and support same, regards many out there who fully accept docs NHS and others and blindly follow advices, surely, the solution here is, one should respect, listen, take a common sense view, also, that perhaps, not always Doctors or system is correct, the simple solution to that, is double check, get a second opinion, make some searches generally ones self, put the picture puzzle altogether and decide from there. And, yes, how many people may be following incorrect advices innocently, those professionals under their roles and responsibilities have an obligation as I see it to ensure, they are 100% uptodate with information being provided overall, i.e. not outdated from their medical school days, or associations, simply following giving out very old outdated info, and if they have doubt they are update, then dont give the information and ensure you gain knowledge to ensure the information provided is the best possible available time of advices. Unfortunately, it seems that is not taking place in many cases sadly this current time. What to do, take the approach, do what others may not be doing, make ones own searches and enquiries from reputable sound sources, and take it from there, incredible to think recommending rice and bread, I agree with you NO THANKS!!

Yet paradoxically many of the challenges facing the developed world are because we are living longer.
