What have you eaten today? (Low carb forum)

Breakfast: my usual low carb coconut ‘porridge’ with strawberries and cream washed down with a black coffee.
Lunch: lamb roasted with rosemary and garlic, tiny roast potato and half an individual Yorkshire and mixed veg followed by SF Jelly and cream.
Mid afternoon: phd bar and black coffee.
Dinner: cold meat, cheese and salad buffet followed by one Jaffa cake.

Tomorrow is my blood test day, couldn’t get an early appt. it’s not til 10.40, but I want to fast to get an accurate triglyceride reading. Last time whilst fasting, my blood sugar kept rising, up to 6.3, I don’t get 6s these days so this was high for me. When I got home I had a coffee with cream and by lunch it was back down to normal. So what can I do to stop it rising, will walking put it up or down? I think it’ll take my mind off getting hungry which I’m sure I will be, but will it make me more hungry? Aargh I don’t know what to do for the best! :nailbiting::arghh::meh:

I hope all goes well and your results reflect all your good work, I wouldn’t know what would be the best for you to do, my blood sugar rises during the morning regardless of whether I eat or not until lunchtime. Hopefully someone will have more constructive advice for you but I just wanted to wish you well x

I vote for walking. There are proven benefits for fasting exercise - maybe your muscles use up the spare glucose the liver puts out? I don’t know how it works but it’s got to be better than sitting indoors thinking about the breakfast you’re missing!
Even if it does rise a bit it won’t have much effect on your HbA1C - just one reading out of a whole 3months of good ones.
Good luck tomorrow, I’m sure you’ll have a brilliant result but it is a nerve-wracking time isn’t it?

Thank @jayney27 and @DJC3 for your best wishes, it’s like the night before an exam isn’t it? When you’ve done all your revision and there’s nothing more you can do but go for the exam and then nervously wait for the results! Sometimes mine have appeared on line the very next day but last time they didn’t appear til after my review with the Dr. I hope they appear quickly this time as my GP appt isn’t til 10th August!

I’m sure you have nothing to worry about and will pass with flying colours :)

@Rachox drink loads of water that will help with everything including the blood draw and concentration in your bloods. But also remember that the hbaca1 won’t reflect this mornings number just how it’s been over mainly last 6 weeks so it shouldn’t affect your result in the same way as it would for a mysugr reading.
Re exercise not too intense as that can put up your Trigs believe it or not so gentle walking if you are planning some !
Best of luck but sure it will all be good.

Morning all. Very early to bed for me yesterday so just catching up over my morning cup of tea with cream (that’s the attempt to stay on topic)

@Geoffno6 Guessing you’re fairly newly diagnosed or new to LCHF? Agree with the advice you’ve been given above - your post meal readings show that this way of eating is agreeing with you as you are not spiking after eating. Your numbers should start to reduce overall as you continue.

@Rachox good luck with the blood tests - sure you will ace them! A nice gentle stroll should do the trick - apart from anything else it will be relaxing and distracting!

@shelley262 I hope today is a little less full on.

Good luck with the bloods, Rachox. Personally, I wouldn't necessarily do anything to alter my routine, aside from fasting, obviously. It's one morning from many and at 6.3 unimportant in the scheme of things.

Hopefully, your bloods will be back quickly. I use the walk-in clinic at the local(ish - 30 mile round trip) for my bloods, because I can choose exactly when I go and be in and out in not time, from the clinic opening at 8am. (I usually have a Costa on my way to the M&S Food Hall for a trawl, then home), but the results are always super-fast. For example, I had blood drawn on Tuesday last week (thyroid function, Vit D and Bone Profile) at 8am, and my results were viewable by 4pm. That gets my big tick in the box!

The only time things have been much slower was when I had a massive raft of tests done (around 30 - yes, 30 - the Endo wanted a good look at everything). They came back over a few days, with the hormone ones taking a little longer than the basics.

Do you have any similar option you can use (although ideally a bit closer to hand!)?

Thanks for the advice. I’m in a city with a huge teaching hospital with a phlebotomy dept. but the stress of trying to park there would definitely put my blood sugars up! So far I managed to sleep in til 8 I usually wake at 7 so one hour less to get hungry! Blood sugar so far has only gone up from 4.8 to 5.2 in the hour since waking.

The hospital I use is a very large teaching hospital too, but parking up at around 06:50, you'd be surprised how deserted the carparks actually are. I am usually in and out before the charging structure comes into play (30 minutes free).

In my world, that's about perfect.

Just returned from a great camping trip in West Wales. Walked an average of 10 miles per day for 5 days and ate well but not excessively. (Friend had cakes, ice cream etc, I didn't). So expected some weight loss but it didn't happen! Could be due to gin intake. So food since has been down to fridge/freezer foraging.
B. Boiled egg, slice of HiLo toast with butter and vegemite, black tea, black coffee
L. Third of tomato and mozzarella crustless quiche, tomatoes, cucumber, mixed nuts.
Snack. Half granola slice.
Made it to the shops.
D. Gazpacho followed by salad of watercress, spinach, rocket, red and yellow tomatoes, roasted onions and sweet potatoes topped with fried halloumi with a fajita spice mix topping.

Ah. It should have said 07:50, but then again, that may not mean anything either :p
Oh I just about understand that! Blood sugar peaked at 6.1 today, so better than the 6.3 it reached last time plus it was a much later appt so I’m happy. I didn’t go for a walk, I kept my routine as normal as you suggested. Off for my usual walk this afternoon.

For me; I can't get into lots of jiggerypokery prior to A1cs. It is what it is, and even the "whilst we're at it, we might as well" ones we sometimes end up with when othrr bloods are drawn are fine by me. Who are we trying to cheat anyway? We know what we've done and how we've done it.

Fingers crossed for you.

I’ve just learnt from here that the triglyceride reading can be adversely affected by eating shortly before the test, so I fast even though they say at the surgery it doesn’t matter. Will be checking on line from tomorrow for results. She did just about everything today I think, so I may be back here asking help to interpret some of them!

Because I go to the big hospital to have my blood drawn, I always just fast anyway, because although I don't have many tests requiring fast, therr's usually at least one in the batch, which now includes thyroid function where I have to leave my dose until afterer the blood is drawn. The 30-40 minutes aftere taking it, before eating or drinking can feel a real challenge sometimes though - even when on a run of the mill day, it isn't being extrreme in terrrms of my first cup of teaa or brekkers.

It's a funny old thing the human mind and body.

Hi all. Simple menu today.
