Type 2 HBA1C + Dairy

Hey everyone. I am new to this forum I have been diabetic for 4 years type 2, my partner and I have we want to start a family so I’m trying to lower my HBA1C.

I have been cutting out sugar and as much carbs as I can. As well as sticking to a 1500calorie diet or under. At my last diabetic appointment I seen a nutritionist who helped me with understanding what was good and what to avoid (things I didn’t even know) and I was told butter was okay but obviously not to over do it.
I had an appointment with my nurse today and she had asked what I had for breakfast and I told her I had brown toast, 1 boiled egg which came to 300 calories and then asked about butter which I explained I weight out 10grams between the bread and I got told off and was told to avoid butter and that I shouldn’t be eating it. I’m a bit confused because I thought if I wasn’t having sugar and trying to cut out carbs as much as possible I didn’t see the issue with butter. Sorry it’s a weird post and a long one but any advice would be great. Thanks.

Hi and welcome
Unfortunately like many diabetes nurses yours is an idiot.
For breakfast you'd be far better off having 3 eggs and butter without the toast.
Your bloods sugars would love you far more too.

I’m trying to avoid the carbs as much as possible, I normally have cereal for breakfast but thought I’d change it up a bit this morning with a bit of toast. Left my appointment feeling like I can’t do anything right, but it doesn’t help when there’s 2/3 HCP’s telling me different things

Do you have a glucose meter? You can use it before and after meals to see how different foods affect your blood glucose.
it doesn’t help when there’s 2/3 HCP’s telling me different things

The meter doesn't have an opinion, like those HCP's, it only shows which foods agree with your metabolism and which foods don't. (I predict butter is fine by the way.)

You can have low carb breads, which you can make yourself or buy Livlife or the protein bread I get in Asda which looks like brown bricks and they are only 4 gm of carb per admittedly rather small slice.
The butter is low carb - no need to limit it. No real need to limit calories either - to control type 2 diabetes control the carbs and it all should come good.

Not weird at all. You've been given conflicting advice, the latter being complete rubbish from the position of many forum members. As @bulkbiker says, eggs and butter are a great way to start the day. I tend to either fry them in butter, scramble with loads of butter, make an omlette with loads of butter, boil them top them and then add a good dob of butter to them.... and if they are lucky fry off some bacon..... very trad and no carbs.

I smother everything in butter, it is so good for us in many ways, and as for eggs - best nutritional food on the planet. If you lower your carbs you absolutely need to increase your good fats or you will be hungry and lack energy. Your nurse is just following the out of date guidelines to eat low fat and low calorie. This doesn't work for most of us. It is best to forget calories. Count the grams in the carbs you eat and keep them as low as you feel you can. As said above, your own meter will help you with all this.

Yes, your nurse if wrong. Carbs are our problem and not fats or proteins. Forget calories as they are irrelevant. Focus on the three food groups and the right mix of them plus the quantity of carbs. When you do that calories fade into the distance.

Stick with us.. we've been there, done it ,worn the T-shirt and put it into remission.. something I seriously doubt your HCP's have done.

Thanks everyone for your advice has been very helpful! I have both a meter and I use Libre which is great and I really only get a peak when I eat carbs, which I have I have cut back on massively compared to what I was having.
I was vegetarian most my life and recently only started eating meat again so my diet was mainly carbs most my life and it’s difficult to just completely stop but every day I am having less and less.

I am overweight so I’m calorie counting for the sake of getting that down and that’s why she went off about the butter also she said that not only is it not helping my diabetes but i won’t lose any weight, and told me to go on to margarine which to be honest I’d rather have dry toast!

I'd eat butter over dry toast or margarine any day of the week ( and yes I have been known to eat a slice with nothing else).
Calorie restriction can also be quite counterproductive as it leads to a slowing of metabolic rate when your body starts to think it's starving. Personally I''d try reducing carbs to an absolute minimum first and see if the weight starts to come off.. many of us have found this is more effective than restricting what we eat and is a lot more pleasant.
