We're wandering a bit off topic, but didn't want to ignore your post.
It's not a problem with my meter - I'm very happy with it. Rather it's the issue of the meter and the HbA1c measuring different things. I test 7 times a day (sometimes more if I'm going to the gym as I test before and after that), and while that gives me a good idea of which meals I can tolerate and my general trends (which is really all I need to know to manage as an unmedicated type 2), it is not an accurate prediction of A1c - each reading is at a specific point in time and there's no way of knowing how long I've spent at that particular level.
The HbA1c is measuring an average over 2-3 months, and there are challenges with that due to the differences in glycation etc.

@DJC3 it can be hard not to be disappointed when the meter average is better than the lab test, so I find it helpful to remember the differences.
