    Anybody here speak Spanish?

I'm shortly going to Gran Canaria for a week's "Get Away From It All" break and don't speak a word of Spanish. I'm staying in a self catering appartment so will be buying my own food out there locally and a bit worried about the language barrier. Can anybody please translate for me: 1)...

    Tuna

now and again I treat myself to a couple of slices of toast with tuna spread on it. Just wondering if it's best to get the tuna in brine or water or whatever - or does it not matter?

    Overdone it?

What happens if you take more tabs than you're supposed to take? For example I take 3 x Metformins a day but if I can't remember if I actually took the 3rd one and took another one anyway what would happen? Am I doomed?

    Travelling to Oz

I'm hoping (nothing definite yet) to travel back to Oz staying there for 3 months. I last went in 2005 before I was diagnosed as T2. I doubt very much my GP would give me a prescription for 3 months supply of my needed medication (see my meds list at the bottom of this page). Would I be able...

How much exercise do you do?

I think most of us T2s are put on a regime of tablets and/or insulin, amended diet and excercise. With the excercise aspect in mind, I'm just wondering how much do you do? I read somewhere even vacuuming the floor or doing the washing up (those with diswashers can ignore this bit!) can help...

    Diabetics in underdeveloped countries?

I think most of us in Europe, USA, Australasia and so on take for granted the health services that we currently have even if they're not always perfect. Just wondering today about the less fortunate diabetics in poor, underdeveloped countries. How on earth do they cope? I'd hate the thought of...

Losing weight - will I disappear?

Since my original diabetic diagnosis last October I've steadily lost.....2 stone! (14lbs to our American/Canadian friends). This seems to be ongoing..... Not sure if this is the result of my new medication or my altered diet or increased physical activity or all three combined?.... Have...

Taking tabs with water or what?

Regardless of whether you're T1 or T2 and taking tabs for whatever reason, obviously, taking your tabs with a glass of water makes sense. However, there have been the odd few occasions (for example when out) and I've taken mine with something like diet coke or a cup of tea. Is this ok? Would...

    Overheard conversations.....

I recently read this on a different forum and thought I'd share it here cos I thought it was so hilarious. Person overhead two middle aged women behind him/her on bus in Glasgow recently. Convo went like this: 1st woman: "I'm so proud of my daughter. She's just given birth to a baby boy. She's...

    What's your Favourite cold drink?

I mean the non-alcoholic variety! The question probably relates to both T1 and T2 but as I'm T2 thought I'd post in here. So, what's your favourite cold drink? Mine's Sprite Zero - unfortunately my local supermarket only sell them in the large 2 litre bottles which are rather huge to carry if...

    Deaf Diabetics

If you (or any of your friends or family members are diabetic and BSL users ("British Sign Language") the following video in BSL (plus subtitles) will be of interest I'm sure: www.diabetes.org.uk/BSL. It's a co-production between the RNID and Diabetes UK - it's quite good. It's even useful for...

    Metformin and food?

I think most of us take our Metformin tabs just prior to eating. What I'm wondering is if anybody knows if the effectiveness of the tabs can be affected by what you eat?

    Why don't restaurants......

....have a separate column or page on their menus showing meals suitable for diabetics? Can be a little bit difficult sometimes trying to fathom out what's ok to eat by looking up a "normal" menu especially when you're out with friends or family who are'nt diabetic but you want to eat together...

    Insulin History?

I seem to recall (about 20 years ago?) insulin was then delivered differently? I think it used to be a different type of insulin ingredient delivered via rather large and unweildly (sp?) syringes and needles that had to be constantly sterilised? As a recently diagnosed T2 non-insulin dependent...

    Trying to lose weight?

Whilst I realise none of us (diabetics or not) can never recover our slim youthful looks.....I just wonder if some of the slimming tablets available OTC at the pharmacists can help a little bit? F'instance, I have already lost half a stone since being diagnosed with T2 3 months ago. I'm not...

    Big enough breakfast?

I'm T2 and take Metformin 500mg 3 x daily which is supposed to be taken "with meals" Just wondering if a cereal would be enough to class as a breakfast for my purposes? I'm never hungry of a morning and sometimes it's an ordeal/nuisance just having breakfast (but of course a cuppa or two is a...

    Foot care - how often?

On the NHS I see the chiropodist/podiarist 4 times a year (an arrangement before I was diagnosed as diabetic approx 3 months ago). Every time I go my toenails are always uncomfortably long. Should I be going more often or should I do it privately in between the NHS sessions? Any advice...

    High reading?

As a T2 I pricked myself two hours after breakfast this morning. It read 10.00. That's the highest I've ever had since I was originally diagnosed approx 2 months ago. In all probability the "problem" was caused by the nice restaurant meal with friends last night which included white wine. I...
