Blood Sugar in High 20's and GP not helping, please advise

Well, that didn't go as well as it could have. Doctor seemed in a rush to get me out but I felt like I was in charge and asked lots of questions. To sum up, I have to go for blood tests on Wednesday, and then on Friday that I will start a new tablet called Sitagliptin, this will come in my medicine box and I have to take half of my current dosage of Gliclozide. I was also referred to a Community Diabetic Clinic with a view to starting insulin, I have already called them to make an appointment and they said they will get back to me within 5-7 days. The GP stated that my high levels were not as dangerous as high levels in Type 1s and not to worry. But this is the cause of me feeling rubbish. I can stop taking the Sitagliptin if I feel unwell. I informed the GP that I wanted to stop taking Gliclozide due to weight gain, he said insulin can also cause weight gain but there is something else I can take that won't. He didn't give me the name of this.

My script for Folic Acid will end this month. All my other blood results from February are fine.

Has also increased my dose of Gabapentin to 400mg three times daily to help with pain relief. Couldn't do anything about my lack of sleep as already taking sleeping tablets, even though they are not working.

He did mention my new diet and told me I need to eat wholemeal bread instead of Ryvitas (which I am not eating at all now) and to increase my carb intake, I told him I wasn't going to do that as have seen better results with LCHF, he didn't argue.

I did forget to ask him about my stomach pains, it was on the list that OH had, it just seemed to pass very quickly.

The fact you've got a referal to community diabetic clinic is great.
You will now be seen by professionals that deal with diabetes day in day out. That is a huge step forward. Well done on getting that.
His remarks about high levels not being so bad as a T1 just goes to show how thick some GP's are....beggars belief.
You discussed a lot and blimey that is a much better result with getting referred than I was expecting to be honest...
Well done you for getting some action!!!

Thank you Donnelly.

I asked to be referred and he just said ok, and that if I wanted to go on insulin then I would need to be seen by the Community Clinic anyway.

He would think that my levels are dangerous if he knew exactly how I feel, it's horrible feeling like you are going to pass out all the time, even when sitting down, also feeling your head isn't on right if that makes sense. Feeling dizzy & lightheaded is not nice at all. I did tell him and he said that was normal due to high BG, but it wasn't dangerous. :banghead:

Unbelievable ! So Type 1's amdType 2's are a completely different species, that react to high blood glucose in different ways ? There is more than one Type 2 that has been hospitalised with DKA !

Insulin, by the way, in itself does not have to cause weight gain, it's higher doses in combination with a high carb load that causes this.

I'm so pleased you have now got an appointment with the Diabetes Community Clinic! Result ! :D

Well done you ! :D

Very impressed with what you did here. Well done. :)

Thank you all so much, I just wish I could see the DCC or have my new tablets straight away, but I know I am getting somewhere now so that's good. He couldn't give me Sitagliptin now to see if it will work as I need to have my bloods taken before starting a new medicine. Hopefully, it won't be long. In the meantime I shall continue to low carb and watch my calories. I know posters have said that I don't need to count calories but I feel it's very useful and am enjoying keeping a track on both carbs and calories on My Fitness Pal.

Some count calories, others don't. I counted mine, plus carbs, and lost 4stones 4lbs by keeping my calories to 1200 a day, and carbs to under 60g. I still have to count my calories in order not to lose any more weight. I now try for 1800 calories a day and under 50g carbs, and have fairly stable weight now. If I didn't count them, it wouldn't work for me. We all have different methods of controlling our food.

Scottie.. You do whats right for you ref calorie counting... We are all individual. Although I don't soecificslly count nowadays I have previously as for me gardening I have to make sure I am getting enough calories... So I just know mowadays whether I'm getting enough or too many.

You do whats right for you...

Re calorie counting. I'm one of those who said you don't need to count them. I fully understand why you do still want to keep a check on them, and I use myfitnesspal myself, so it's hard not to check them! As donnellysdogs said you do what's right for you, I totally agree with her on this. All I would say is if you are ever hungry don't stress about going over your calorie limit, the carb one is more important. Like I said earlier. I am impressed with how well you are doing. Keep it up :)

I'm not finding I am hungry at the moment, maybe a bit in a morning if at all, but would go over my 1200 calories if I was. It's still a lot less than I was previously was eating. Thank you :)

BG down from 26.4 this morning to 16.0 after dinner. 2 pork chops and salad and have 341 calories and 23g carb left. Not that I intend eating any more today though. My Mum made the family a gorgeous looking lemon cake but I am resisting so far! ;)

Thank you Scottie. I lost between 1 and 2lbs a week over about 9 or 10 months.

That's a really steady good weight loss. And here I am moaning about only losing 1lb this week. I hope to emulate your loss, slow and steady is surely the answer as I would imagine it's easier to keep it off that way.

BG up to 18.4 3 hours post food, from 16.0 2 hours post food. What am I doing wrong?

Had scambled eggs and 2 slices of bacon for breakfast. 2 x 97% sausages, mushrooms and a child's apple for lunch. 2 x small pork chops and salad for tea.

You aren't doing anything wrong Scottie.. Its your body screaming that it needs an extra source of insulin in someway being given....

You'll get there... I think personally that you are a LADA... in which case you will not be able to lower your levels totally by yourself...
Hold in there doing what you are doing.... When you are given some other treatment and you eat lower carbs its makes life easier long term.
Get your bloods done, get your appointment but don't keep beating yourself up in the interim time.....
Honest... You'll be getting better treatment very soon.

If I could like this post 1000 x I would. Scottie remember this one in your moments of self doubt. You are doing extremely well in a difficult situation, there's no need to beat yourself up at all. :)
