Hi. Today sadly I have tested positive for coronavirus!! Waiting for PCR results now.
Got flu like symptoms but I’m petrified!!

Managed to stay clear after all this time. I know we are all bound to get it at some point and I am fully vaccinated but this hasn’t helped pure fear set in.

Are there ppl on here with T2 who have recovered and can share their story with me?
Is there anymore I can do to help my recovery or lessen chances of going to hospital?

Sorry to be a pain. I am a worrier. Xx

I recommend buying an oximeter. Your oxygen saturation should be 94% or higher. Phone 111 if it goes below this level. Take paracetamol if your temperature is elevated. I was worried when I caught it in September but it was reassuring to know my oxygen levels were fine.

I got covid a month after I was diagnosed with T2 and I was really scared. But it was actually very mild for me. I agree with the above post about an oximeter I brought one and was reassuring but I didn't really need it. Try not to worry, most people are OK.

I have been getting the latest variant symptoms for a while, but by the time I thought of getting a test, there were none.
Thanks to a friend I finally got one yesterday and to my surprise it was negative, despite my yoghurt tasting like beef stew.
I have just been careful to keep warm and sleeping for as long as I needed, and now I am definitely getting better. The symptoms all added up, and were not pleasant, but hardly gave me thoughts of imminent death.

I had Covid in July, I had quite mild illness and was better within 10 days except loss of taste and smell that took around a month to be back to normal.

It's a bit late now since they take days to start working, but have you been taking Vitamin D, Zinc and Magnesium supplements in order to minimise symptoms in the event of catching it?
I get a fair amount of vitamin D in my normal Low Carb high Protein diet and I have ben supplementing both Zinc and Magnesium since the pandemic started.

Is it flu like symptoms or just bad cold symptoms, if the latter you may be lucky that it is omicron rather than Delta variant.

Your experience of COVID is typical of most cases. Even people with underlying health conditions don't end up experiencing any complications, they're just ill with flu-like symptoms for a week or two. Sadly people have lost all sense of proportion when talking about COVID, this is due to the media whipping up hysteria. Keep level headed, get plenty of rest, take some vitamins (Zinc & Magnesium) and stay hydrated; if you find your symptoms worsening then ring up NHS Direct to see if you need to attend A&E.

I had covid back in March 2020. The only advice available back then was not to call your doctor and to go to A&E if your lips turned blue.
Things have moved on since then. Hubby recently had covid and he got a text from the surgery saying to contact them if he needed help or advice.

A friend of mine has T2 and had covid about a month ago. She spent a couple of days in bed but recovered after 10 days. However she was vaccinated and I think that’s what’s made the difference. Her 80 year old father also had it but had had his booster and he felt like he had a very bad cold.

I am pretty covid sceptical (not a denier or an anti vaxxer) but still felt a frisson on fear when the test turned positive (confirmed on pcr) and as type 1 aged 50 I am supposed to be more vulnerable than a t2 peer. However absolutely nothing happened other than losing money whilst I could not work.
All friends and family told me how lucky I was but I only know people who've had it mildly.
So rest up, eat well and drink fluids. Don't hesitate to call 111 if your symptoms get worse as prompt treatment is best and you will get treated contrary to media images of ambulances stacking up and beds blocked etc. The mainstream news does highlight admissions with covid (still a small % of intakes) but fails to mention discharges of same!

Hi there

Really sorry to hear you have COVID. But do not panic. It is probably the OMICRON variant and the symptoms are generally not so severe. But keep an eye out for the symptoms. If you are vaccinated the probability of severe symptoms is greatly reduced. So please do not panic.

If the symptoms are like a cold/bad cold then treat with you regular pain killers (paracetamol, ibuprofen etc.). Keep well hydrated and rest. It will pass.

BUT, if your symptoms are severe then dial 999.
Official NHS advice is below. Link to symptom checker if you are worried about your symptoms, you can check and see if you need to dial 999.

Coronavirus COVID-19 Symptom Checker
Call 999 now if you have any life threatening symptoms:
  • Severe breathing problems (e.g. can’t talk normally, turning blue and gasping)
  • Chest pain (e.g. like a tight band or heavy weight in or around the chest)
  • Stroke (e.g. unable to raise arm, one sided limb weakness or drooping face)
  • Severe injury/heavy bleeding that cannot be stopped
  • Fitting now/unconscious (e.g. cannot be woken)
Please DO NOT go to your GP Surgery, a pharmacy or hospital.
https://111.wales.nhs.uk/SelfAssessments/symptomcheckers/COVID19.aspx

Do try not to worry, keep in contact with friends/family on the phone so that they can keep track of your well being and be there as a back up if you do need emergency help to be called.
Each day that goes by will let you know how things are going. Most likely things will get better. Hang in there and keep an eye on your symptoms. Use the symptoms checker if you are unsure. Call 999 if you have to based on symptom checker. Remember, being vaccinated really reduces risk of severe symptoms, OMICRON symptoms tend to be less severe. Do not get too stressed or panic. The science is on your side right now, a good outcome is the most probable outcome.

I got COVID just before the first wave, very early on, before the vaccines. It was really, really horrible. I've had proper flu once that I can remember. This was the only thing I ever had as an adult in my 54 years that got close to being as bad as real influenza, less temperature but much worse lung and chest symptoms. I nearly called 999 due to the frothy, rattling, bubbling noise in my chest when sleeping. I was at the point where I was scared to go to sleep and I thought I might be developing pneumonia. I was going to go to hospital the next day but things turned a corner and felt a bit better. Improved every day. Look back and feel lucky. Also at that time, we didn't think COVID was really here yet there were no restrictions. But it turns out that it was. Had I known I'd have called 999 because the symptoms were that bad, they reminded me of the time my mum had pneumonia and had to be hospitalised. But now, having had the virus, been double jabbed, and had the booster, I know that there is a very high probability I'd be OK if I was unlucky and caught the virus again - I prob won't get really bad symptoms. I still take precautions in public, masks and sanitizer gels. But I do not worry or stress about it.

I hope this helps Smiler69. Please do try not to worry too much, it'll likely be ok. Please write and ask if you are worried and need assurance. Remember there is always NHS 111 and the NHS website too. They'll tell you if your symptoms need urgent care.

All the best to you
Aasim

Update ; Yep, PCR test came back positive.
Symptoms have increased. I believe I have the Omicron variant.

THANKYOU so so much to those of you who have messaged me. It has really helped to reach out and hear from you.

I am very grateful that I am all jabbed up and today I am able to breathe in and out. Just going to follow the advice, rest and take a day at a time.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Hi There

Sorry to hear you have COVID. I had it in June of this year and like yourself was worried due to all the media coverage I had heard on it but the reality for me was it was really just a bad cold effect, the worst part was having to isolate and stay in and then I lost my sense of taste and smell for a while which was a real pain but now back to normal  Just rest up and take care and as some mentioned above get an oximeter and keep an eye on your sats. Wishing you a speed recovery x

Following on from @ert I would double up and say that an Pulse Oximeter is great for personal reassurance and early warning of what the experts call a "Severe" Covid complication, essentially the starvation of oxygen to the cells. From £10.00 you can get one for next day delivery from the big "A" for example.

Should you get one, see where it reads maybe against and teenager (just to see the variance). For example I am now reading on the same brand the same as my 19 year old footballer daughter (96 / 97 sometimes 99/100, circa 7 weeks after severe Covid). I)n any event as advised above you want a reading above 94.

An alternative is to use a high end smartwatch (although these are NOT recommended for medical use) here's my results of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic:

OxmeterSamsung.jpg

I have been testing this for 3.5 weeks now, and it tracks almost perfectly with the NHS approved Pulse Ox manual unit. I have had for a similar time the Garmin Vivoactive 4 s, which aslo does "Respiration", this is also a valid measurement which could indicate a trigger for medical advice (value should be between 12 and 20 brpm):

Not wishing to speak out of turn but I think one should be aware of the following.

Effects of Skin Pigmentation on Pulse Oximeter Accuracy at Low Saturation.

"Conclusions
The three tested pulse oximeters overestimated arterial oxygen saturation during hypoxia in dark-skinned individuals."

https://pubs.asahq.org/anesthesiolo...ffects-of-Skin-Pigmentation-on-Pulse-Oximeter.

Unfortunately it seems when first developed and tested stupidly they only tested them on those of lighter hue.

When I was in hospital about 8 years or more ago I was wearing black nail varnish. I was told to remove it off one finger so the oxymeter would work properly. The nurse explained it was because it was black.

When I was nursing we removed all colours of nail varnish not just black!

Did it come back all of a sudden or some here and there? I'm about 3 weeks in and I haven't retained much back. I can smell essential oils though, and sometimes I get a small taste of some foods come through but it's sporadic.

It came back gradually. Hope you get yours back completely soon.
