Hi all

My husband (male 37) has been having an issue with frequent urination for 2 weeks now.

He has had bloodwork done and the results were available for us to view today. My concern is there is no HB1AC result. It is all just cholesterol results (numbers not great but was hoping to see whether he is infact diabetic)

The day he visited the GP, they tested the urine which was positive for glucose and they were sure the frequent urine is down to being Diabetic so ordered blood work.

My question is this, will the frequent urination go away with meds? Have any of you experienced this too? He needs to go every 20 mins and it's only a bit

Also will they be able to diagnose just by looking at cholestrol levels?! I'm so confused

We ordered a kit off amazon so we can see how high the BG is seeing as the GP won't see us about the results till the end of next week! He is really suffering

Hi and welcome. Frequent urination is one of those signs that is strongly associated with Type 2 diabetes. Having said that, I never had it: quite the reverse as my kidneys stopped working. It's usually thought of as the body's attempt to get rid of some of the extra glucose via peeing it out.

The good news is that all of the symptoms caused by having high blood glucose are likely to improve greatly if blood glucose levels are reduced.

Medication is one way of doing that. I lowered mine to normal levels, without medication, in four months by almost completely eliminating carbohydrate from what I ate.

Cholesterol has nothing to do with whether someone has diabetes or not.

The HbA1C test does take longer than the cholesterol tests so it may just be that the result for it isn't there yet and you need to wait a bit longer, normally my docs/hospital say wait a week for it for me - thyroid, cholesterol etc are normal back way faster - ie in a day or two but not the HbA1C

If they were sure he was diabetic @itsallagame i'm sure they will have done an hba1c. At our surgery they don't put any results online if they're outside normal range, until a gp has discussed it with you (unless it's to be expected - i.e already diagnosed with such and such). Your surgery may be different, of course.

Did they test his blood glucose as well?
If he's spilling glucose in his urine, chances are his blood glucose is high.
When will your fingerprick testing kit from Amazon arrive? Please test, and if his numbers are alarmingly high (upper teens or higher) call 111 for advice, especially because his symptoms started so suddenly.
Developing nausea, belly ache, funny smelling breath or funny breathing are reasons to contact a health care provider right away, just in case.
My question is this, will the frequent urination go away with meds? Have any of you experienced this too? He needs to go every 20 mins and it's only a bit
If the frequent urination is indeed caused by diabetes, it will go away if he gets his glucose levels right again.
If it's caused by a UTI or something else, it's likely to improve with treatment as well.

Wow Thank you all so much for the replies. You've been very helpful. @Antje77 The Amazon kit arrives today by 1pm. My husband doesn't usually eat till lunch time so he will be doing the test as soon as it comes through the door. Will update here!

Makes sense that the HB1AC is not on the list either because it is not in yet, or they won't upload it as it's out of range and the GP needs to discuss. I didn't think of that!

@KennyA that is amazing to hear you managed to lower it by a diet change and without medication. Glad I joined this Forum. Have already learnt a lot by reading everyone's experiences

Have a look at the "Success Stories" section. Lots of accounts of big HbA1c reductions without meds in there.

Hi all. The kit came and the reading was 8.3 - so from what I read, in the diabetic range. Hopefully we will get this under control soon with diet changes and see what the GP says! Thanks all

@KennyA I will certainly have a read of that section. Thank you!

On the 8.3 - it depends. It's only one reading, and there is an allowed 15% error for 95% of readings in fingerprick checks - eg a true value of 7.0 could return a reading of anywhere from 6ish to 8ish and that would be "accurate enough" - and 1 in 20 readings can be anywhere outside that level of accuracy.

The value of testing is building up a complete picture of which foods do what to BG levels - and that takes time.

If the reading is completely accurate, and if there's been something to eat in the last hour, that sort of result would not be unexpected. I can hit mid-9s 30-40 minutes after a small latte.

I control my type 2 just by not eating the carbs - it is the same logic as when the sink is blocked and overflowing, you turn off the tap and let the water drain away as it can - medication bails out the sink into a bucket, works faster but the problem is still the same.

Thanks all. Got a call from the GP today and yes it is Type 2. Prescription for Metformin has been sent to the pharmacy. We were expecting this. Since joining the forum my husband has been off the carbs, and we will continue to improve his diet so it remains under control.

@Resurgam great analogy, thank you for sharing. I think low or no carbs for the husband!

One more thing to add: frequent urination comes with diabetes, because we urinate a LOT.... Little bits at a time, frequently though, could indicate a bladder infection, with diabetics are very prone to. (The bacteria end up feasting on the glucose in the urine). So if he's still weeing often but not a lot, it's worth turning in a sample and checking for an infection, if that's not been done already.

Your question about frequent urination, I answer with a question?.
1,When he goes let say normal but almost stop and start again.
2, he goes and about 5 minutes later needs to go again but struggles to go. It could be a prostate problem. If yes ask your GP for a P A S test.

I am pre diabetic for about fifteen years now. I don’t take any meds. Frequent wee is part of my life. I drink four big glasses of water every day. I wee day and night a lot and I empty my bladder many times a day. I think that’s one of the reasons my diabetes is well under control.

I was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate about 3 years after being diagnosed with diabetes. I was called in to see my GP about my glucose levels being high,I replied that I would like to see D/N because I was weeing a lot . he sent me for P.A.S test. There may be a lot of men with diabetes that wee lot but you never know it could be to do with your prostate

Ten yrs ago a colonoscopy was done on me, in two weeks I am due for another one. A year ago the PSA test was done too. Seems like my weeing a lot is most probably diabetes related. In two weeks I will be more updated, I am having colonoscopy again. Thanks a lot for the useful information.
