What have you eaten today? (Low carb forum)

Oh now I will have to have to make that this evening. Zero rice though.

Missed yesterday;
Lunch a couple of boiled eggs bashed onto a mug bread.

Dinner; a spicy curry thing, made out unlabeled things found in the freezer, on konjak rice.

If you're short of inspiration for tomorrow's dinner, I'll let you know later what I have this evening.

We found a new place, and the cook doesn't have MSG in the kitchen, so all flavours are clean (and very, very delicious). She was very excited that we like spicy food, as most Europeans who go in ask it be toned right down.

I am not travelling all this way to eat bland food!

I had a really weird experience last night. Totally bizarre, and I am NOT understanding what happened.

During the afternoon I conceived a totally out-of-character craving for a Snickers Bar. Haven't wanted one, or thought of one, for years. 8 years at a minimum.

Yet the obsession just grew and grew.
To the point that when Mr B rang me from work at 9pm, I asked him to pick me up a small one (I believe they still come in different sizes? But I don't know - which just shows you how far out of the loop I am).

So at 10 pm I ate the Snickers, with unalloyed delight (which is even weirder, because it was sickly sweet and frankly 'meh', yet to me it was exquisite, while STILL being sickly sweet and 'meh' to my low carb carni tastebuds)

Then I went to bed, anticipating a 2.30 am hypo/nightmare/sweat combo, which is what normally happens after carbs in the later evening.
Nope.
Slept magnificently, no disturbances, widdles, or nightmares.
Woke up TOTALLY rested, full of beans and raring to go.

Still scratching my head.
Happy, but puzzled, and (currently) not interested in repeating the Snickers experience.

(did check the snickers info, and it turns out that it is lower carb than I expected. A 48g bar is 26g carbs, which is 4x the carbs I had during the rest of the day, but still no hanging offence)

@Brunneria

How really strange! The only time I had an overwhelming craving like that was when I was pregnant (many years ago) but I remember at the time feeling very confused and sort of out of control. Not a nice feeling.

I don't think I've ever had a Snickers bar but it's interesting to learn that it has only 26g carbs I would have thought it would be much higher.

Today....

Breakfast: leftover smoked salmon and M&S Whipped Soft Cheese

Lunch: 30g nuts

Dinner: Grilled pork belly strips with sugar free sweet chilli sauce

Drinks: usual black decaff coffee and couple of litres of still spring water

Hi Brunneria. You have just explained what happened to me when I ate carbs close to bedtime recently - something I would never normally do. After being asleep for only 2 hours I was wide awake, sweating, anxious and sensing that the carbs could have had something to do with it! Thanks.

If @Chook is right, can I be godmother and choose his/her name?

Lunch yesterday Seeded flatbread filled with cream cheese, smoked salmon and capers. 30g mixed nuts.
Snack. Buttered quinoa scone, black Earl Grey tea (cafe)
D. Indian spiced vege hash with 2 fried eggs, 10 blueberries and some Greek yoghurt, cashews.
B. Mashed avocado topped with sardines and a couple of sundried tomatoes, black tea, black coffee.

Risky strategy, did it work?

Quite good.
Definitely some meat in there - looked like some leftover slow cooked meat flakes.
Probably a bit of what looked like some bitter gourd so only a smidge.
Some left over ragu.
Slow fired some chopped onions, dived into the masala dabber then grated ginger and garlic - chucked in the stuff from the freezer, a couple of chopped tomatoes and a cup of water. Turned down the heat, lid on, wait.
Pretty good taste. The piece of bitter gourd gave it a sour note so didn’t put any tamarind in. Did put a tablespoon of coconut flakes on the top.

Yes, sounds similar.

Having been lucky enough to use a Libre occasionally, I was fascinated to discover what happens to my bgs overnight. I had always thought that they just sort of trundled along on an even keel, but oh no. For me, there is often more variation at night (both highs and lows) than during my days.

I usually go to bed on a bg that is gently drifting downwards, until about 2.30 am, at which point I am nearing hypo territory. Then my liver seems to dump a bit of glucose, and my bg bounces along until morning, in a series of little molehills. Once my eyes open, it climbs, slowly and steadily, unless I eat. At which point it levels out or drops a bit.

For clarity: I do not think most people experience the above. My hormones are a bit iffy, and most people don't (I think) get nightly hypos at 2.30am, like clockwork. Circadian rhythmns, and wotnot.

However, experience has taught me that the more carbs I eat in the evening, the deeper the 2.30am hypo, which, if deep enough, is usually accompanied by a nightmare and waking to thudding heart and sweating. Sometimes sleep walking (Mr B always finds that good for a laugh, unless I annoy him too much with dramas about bombs in the street outside, or someone stealing the car, or zombies climbing the stairs. Yes, those are all true stories).

Needless to say, I avoid carbs in the evenings! lol

Haha! Well, I am definitely broody at the moment.
But not for human babies.
Wanna pupppeeeee!!!!

Today's food will NOT involve a Snickers Bar.
I expect to have prawn mayo with brinjal pickle for lunch, a three bird roast (discovered in the freezer last night) for evenign meal, and a few 70% choc squares and cashews during the day to drip feed in enough carbs that I don't get another Snicker Craving. Two days in a row would be pushing my luck!

Definitely going to be Hot and Sour chicken soup. Just made a batch of Thai Chilli Paste as I had run out. I know you can buy it but it’s full of sugar in supermarkets and dead easy to knock up a batch - well, my own version of Nam Prik Pao anyway. Having some Northern Indian blood myself and a Thai daughter in law has it’s advantages.

@ziggy_w welcome back. Nice to "read" you again. @BibaBee - poor Mr B - glad to see he is returning to normal again. So scary when it is vision. @ianpspurs hope your Julie is much better. I have a couple of days to catch up on as I have been busy with belligerent grandsons. I have now given up trying to force No 1 Grandson into going in early to a place he doesnt want to go. The school will just have to see it is making him miserable (and me) and he is perfectly fine with his friends in the lines. No 2 meantime has developed tantrums again so I've been introducing both of them to "grounding" - if you feel you are getting mean/angry/anxious then do this. No 1 changed the last 2 to something more appropriate.
5 things you can see
4 things you can touch
3 things you can hear
2 deep breaths and count to 20
1 pat yourself on the back.

No 2 is to count backwards from 10. Logic is whatever they were feeling should be gone by the time they get through this. The wee one will take more work but familiarity should get it working. Anyway, bed on Monday 6.9 FBG 6.1.
B. Tassimo Americano grande with a dash of cream. Dr Almond ciabatta with a boiled egg and pate pate.
L. 2 mini chicken wings, 2 rollitos and 2 koftas.
D. Cod loin with my sesame crumb, veggie chips and DD curry tartare sauce. Halo top and raspberries.

Wednesday

Bed 7.7 FBG also 7.7 - no idea why other than I'm tired and longing for School holidays.

B. Another couple of bits of Dr Almond bread - egg mayo on one, pate pate on the other. Tassimo Americano grande with a dash of cream.
L. Nothing
D. Remains of the chicken wings with veggie chips and sour cream/chive dip.
Remains of halo top with blackberries/raspberries.

Today was going to be pork ribs I was going to spice but, I got home from the school run to discover Hubby had used them and the beef ribs to make stock for broth and they're tasteless now! No doubt I'll find something. No 1 has his second dental appointment this afternoon. Back on the gas but a jab as well this time as they need to drill. He seems pretty calm. It has been explained to him how his face will feel but it will go away. We have Hedwig the owl with us to hold onto while we feel odd. At least it's just 1 tooth today.
@zauberflote - have a lovely time with family.

They used to be called Marathon didn't they? Thankfully I have an aversion to any nuts that have had anything done to them. Plain nuts in their shells fine - cooked, salted, caramel/chocolate coated - keep they away from me. The sight/smell/taste makes me physically sick. Barcadi does the same thing. No idea why unless I had a traumatic nut experience as a child? I can relate to an irrational longing for something though. In my case it is usually something I dont like which I find bizarre.

I haven’t been able to get the M&S whipped creamy cheese for at least a week, I was going to ask if you’d experienced problems but it looks like you can still find it.
I'm fortunate to have 1 large and 1 very large M&S nearby and both always have it. I prefer not to go to the very large one unless I have to as that requires timing to avoid traffic problems.

Chicken embryos. Known as Balut. Yes. I was offered some but could not face them. I have seen them sold in the Isle of Man though.

If you google balut you will see. But the images might make you
Yuk!

Italians are fond of them too. They used to battle over the feet. They also found it entertaining to pull the tendons on the feet to make them move to bamboozle the kiddies (or scare them!).

Thank you - taking manganese when I remember and adding salt to food which I never used to - have a tub of Cornwall Salt - and nearly all gone in just 2 1/2 months so I’m actually shocked as to how much I’ve gotten through. Yes - but last few weeks I have cut back - so thank you for reminding me
