What have you eaten today? (Low carb forum)

hi everyone need to get this off my chest.... apologise in advance for the ramp.....

I seriously can not believe it so still hadn't heard back from the diabetic clinic so telephoned again this afternoon and explained how I have left numerous messages but no one has called me back. The receptionist was like "will are you a patient of us? "have you left messages? so being calm as I could replied. "ah Yes I am and yes I have" .... finally she put me through to my diabetic educator who apologised saying "yes I meant to ring you yesterday but I forgot" and me being gracious accepted her apology and saying I know your busy I understand... even so I was really annoyed/upset with her.
So basically she told me whilst on prednisone I really should be on insulin but because I don't have any that I can take up to 120mg of diamcron daily so to increase my diamcron to 120mg SR at breakfast tomorrow and see how that goes and today as I have already taken my 60mr with breakfast to take 60mr with my next meal today then start the 120mg sr tomorrow. she said it may take a while to get into my symptoms like a few days so just to monitor. I asked if I have any other issues can I contact her she replied well their is nothing else she can do you should really be on insulin whilst on prednisone so not much more can do as I don'tt have any insulin to take unless I get a prescription for some from my GP so for only 4 more weeks of steroids I am hoping that the extra dose works. she certainly was feeling guilty as she kept apologising for not calling me back and said "I should of called and truly sorry not calling me back! so she should I say! ... she understood my concern and frustration about no one calling back and continuously apologised!!

she also explained that the nurses in the hospital don't understand and that they do not recognise BSL as being high as it is the steroids and that they should of listened to me when I kept staying it is high and that they should of consulted with the diabetic doctors and put me on insulin.. she also explained they were using the principle that anything below 10 or a tad over is classified as normal, and don't actually understand that being on steroids need a different approach to control my BSL.

I guess it is a lesson learnt for me also that I need to be more forceful about this and if for any reason I have to go back on the steroids (after this course) I will be advising them to consult with my diabetic doctor/clinic and explained I am usually put on insulin

.... ok so I got it of my chest thanks for reading and have a great day.

Oh dear. It is frustrating, isn't it?

Could it be worth getting your Diabetic Educator to write a letter now, that you could keep, should you need any steroids in the future? Something along the lines of "......should this lady require steroid treatment, please arrange a consultation with the diabetes team for specialist input"....?

It's all very well saying you should be more forceful, but it's likely that at the point of needing steroids, you're also at a point when the last thing you feel is forceful!

Hopefully it would a letter you'd never need to use, but maybe it's a bit like the old umbrella analogy?

Which recipe are you doing, @Chook ? This one, or the Diet Doc? https://www.ditchthecarbs.com/slow-cooker-low-carb-mulled-wine/

No recipe.... The work has all been done for me. Mr C came home from work with some commercial samples of the spices, etc, you add to red winel, port and sugar to make mulled wine - I will be skipping the sugar but may add sweetener. I've had a sniff of them and found one that smells lovely.

@annabell1 - what an awful thing to have happened to you and for your team not to have returned your calls. Do you think it would motivate them if you were to write a letter of complaint?

We are a four dog house today!! My next door but one neighbour has gone to Lapland to get married and to see Santa so we've got her dog. He's an eight month old Ridgeback puppy named Obi and he's a complete nutter. My little pack of three normally spend a lot of time in front of the fire asleep after their morning walk but Obi keeps tormenting them. We've only had him since last evening and he has already learned how to open the bin and is making a start on figuring out how to get the fridge open.

So, yesterday.....

Monday bed: 7.7

Tuesday FBG: 6.8
Breakfast: Spiced chaffle with carb free syrup
2 hours later: 7.5

Lunch: 6.3
Lunch was a 20g piece of Advent calendar cheese (not nice!)
2 hours later: 5.4

Dinner: 5.5
Dinner was another huge salad with cheese, avocado, Moroccan dressing and chia seeds
2 hours later 6.8

Bed: 6.1

(Then, for some reason, my FBG this morning (Wednesday) was 8.0 - probably stress from the puppy who wasn't happy to hear his Mum set off for her Lapland jaunt at 3.09 this morning - I think the entire road heard him barking!)

I am seriously tempted but can't get the kind of cheese here that would make it really useful. What I really want is little oblong pans (about 2" x 5" or thereabouts) to make steamed burgers and steamed cheese, which I saw demonstrated on a food programme yesterday. Looked really interesting, but I think they were purpose built and not available on the market. I will keep trying to work out something though. I don't enjoy burgers done in oven, pan or microwave and I suspect the AF has nothing to offer me in this regard.

How about little loaf tins? Would they be suitable? You can get them on eBay.

Hi All. For all those struggling with cheese grating I use a Microplane medium and it is so easy to use and clean.. you do have to watch your fingers. Make sure you get the professional cook one with the steel handle as those with plastic handles snap off after a while. @annabell1 sorry for all the inefficiency of the clinic, not what you need right now. @Annb glad the soup worked out, veggie broths are the best. @DJC3 another great review of the Iceland red shrimp. I have no freezer room due to Christmas but in Jan will be doing a haul. Am going to nominate one drawer LC entirely for me. @ianpspurs good luck with the move and planning the party for MIL. Is a cheese curler one of those things you see folk on tv plunging into big wheels of stiltons or cheddars to sample the batch?
Today I am eating:
Breakfast: usual slice LivLife toast, butter, tea x2.
Lunch: late due to power cut, heated up mug of Leek & Broccoli broth.
Supper: will be Spanish chicken “not casserole”. Mr PM will not tolerate anything labelled stew or casserole though will happily eat Boeuf Bourginon (dont know if I spelt that right) or Coq au Vin or other named things. I think it is a throwback to the not fondly remembered grey stews of his childhood.

Did you get the cheese too? It looks fab, Ive always tried to cut my cheese into wafer thin slices, it does somehow taste better. I couldn’t possibly justify the price but oh how I envy you your Christmas curled cheese.
Didn't see that cheese but one may appear. This is on order https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/party-five-tier-cheese-cake/655019-676397-676397 - the boys like a bit of cheese. I was talked out of the raclette and heater https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/raclette-and-heater/877110-701880-701881

I put about 700 ml of the cauliflower soup into the freezer last night, which left a small bowl for today. This afternoon I added some double cream to it and had that, about 2.30. I have some braised lamb and butternut squash out of the freezer for later tonight.

Had to go to Stornoway for a US scan of my liver (6 monthly check) first thing this morning. So I could only have hot water before I went, but it was such a cold morning and I couldn't get warm. It didn't help that Neil went out to defrost the car and it refused to start! Luckily he has a sort of gadget that puts an extra surge through the battery (plugs in to the external power supply that he also put in) and it got it going. We actually left with time in hand to get to the hospital but ran into lots of traffic and ended up 5 minutes late. Straight in though and back out in about 20 minutes. Radiologist says there's no deterioration since last scan, so that's good. Did a little bit of shopping and then home. I was so cold. I had been wearing light clothes to make it easier to be scanned so I changed into thicker, warmer clothes and put on my big knitted poncho which my DIL made for me and had some hot tea. Took me about 3 hours to get warm.

Ann glad the scan went well. Its horrible to be so cold but I think layers are probably the answer. Also cuddling a hot water bottle is good.

Needless 4.50 start so lots of tea and a cinnamon CWC until around 1.30; Skinny bread toast with Foie Gras for lunch (was going to be evening meal with some Monbazillac but not a day for wine); 20 gms Dr Almond Milk chocolate (very creamy but a slight eryth aftertaste); evening = 175 gms antipasti, 2 h/b eggs, 1 avocado and about .5 tblsp toasted pine nuts. Lots and lots of tea - not quite on top form today and bg showed it until lunchtime.
ETA: 2 windows each from cheese and pork scratching advent calendars - 2 x 20 gms cheese and 5 gms pork rinds

Evening all. Just got back from late night shopping and Christmas market in Truro. We actually got everything we needed within about 20mins in M&S so didn’t need to bother with anywhere else. Feeling pleased with ourselves we had supper in our favourite fish restaurant. A large seafood platter for 2: Mussels, large shell on prawns, a prawn skewer, scallops and calamari. I talked to the waitress about carbs and she was lovely. I was going to just let daughter have all the calamari ( battered) but waitress said I could have mine unbattered or have a couple extra king prawns instead. My salad had no dressing but I got extra aoli - they couldn’t have been more helpful.
Earlier today was a bits &pieces lunch as I dashed in and out briefly. Airfried chicken wings, olives, few pecans, prosciutto, and about 15g cheddar. 15g Montezuma’s absolute black.
Before that just coffee

18-12-19
Breakfast: 2x CWC, nut granola, 2 eggs scrambled with cheese.
Coffee and biscuits
Lunch BG 5.7
bread. Delicious country style seeded loaf. Far too much of it. No idea of weight but imagine a baguette cut on a 45 degree angle, about 1 cm thick. So actually not a huge amount. But much more than usual. Three slices with butter, chicken, tomato and cucumber. Chunks of cheese, really just an excuse to have more bread and cup of tea.
BG Two hours 7.3
Dinner was late, very tempted to start on wine before, had tea instead. BG 5.2
Dinner chicken leg casserole, with leeks, mushrooms, carrot potato and brocolli. Only one small piece of potato in my portion. Rosé wine, nice dry one. Second glass. And third.
2 Hour BG5.8
Was wanting sweet stuff. No chocolate in the house, had yoghurt strawberries and cream, then biscuits. How do others resist? Do tell.
Have kept tight control on carbs for couple of weeks. There was chance of going to UK before Xmas and was thinking to get HbA1c done. That is now def not happening and my motivation and mood are lowered as a result. See confessions of a carb addict above
.
The men took out the big beam today. Bit nerve-wracking watching MrSlim chainsaw the beam that has held the house together and the roof up for around 600 years.
Will try and post pic.
The semi-wild cat that has haunted my doorstep for weeks took off in a huff at the arrival of yet more strangers. She seemed ok with one. Hid, of course, emerged soon after he left. But two vans and three men that was too much. She hasn't been seen at all tonight.
Too much wine and carbs today.
Now Making tea and going to bed. Hoping for a night sleep, but seem to have hit a stress waking patch. With its normal corresponding tendency for night time snacks. Blaming impending Xmas.

Have you considered doing an home A1c? Of course, there are tests on Amazon and the like, or maybe MonitorMyHealth would do it.

They send out a kit and instructions, which you follow (just a finger prick test, although requiring more of the red stuff). You then send it back, and they post your results on your online account.

Your test must reach them, within 5 days of the blood being drawn. Seems credible to me, but I haven't read their T&Cs fine print. They have an excellent email support service for questions (hence I know about the 5day thing).

https://monitormyhealth.org.uk/

This service is run by the Devon and Exeter NHS Trust, using NHS labs outside peak times (evenings and weekends). It's £29 for the test.

Do you know - I have a box full of hot water bottles both traditional ones and gel filled ones, which I used to have for my husband, but I've never thought to use one for myself. Silly me! I must keep that in mind for the rest of this winter.

Today 19/12/19
Breakfast: low carb porridge and 100g greek yoghurt
Lunch: Two XL fried eggs, 120g wilted baby spinach
Dinner: savory turkey mince (166g turkey mince, 170g green beans, 270g cauliflower). Made a batch of this, so same dinner for tomorrow night, and there is a container in the freezer. Also got some nice oyster blade steaks today, butcher was great, he flattened them and individually wrapped them, so I can just pop them in the freezer. It's a good lean steak for about $3.00 for 150g raw weight. Just right with vegetables and a fried egg for dinner, so kind of set for that weird new years, boxing day, public holiday cycle.
