I made a mutton stew earlier this week and it was a lot tastier than the usual lamb. Got it from the butchers in Tesco for a very reasonable £6.45/ kilo.

I'll have to get my son to look in Tesco to see if he can see mutton. Thanks for the information.

Google is very informative about sooty grunters. Main thing I get from it is that it's unlikely to be available in these northern climes - although we are on an island, even getting the kind of fish available on the mainland is difficult here. Catches are normally sold off the island and we are left with the remaining fish that the dealers don't want. Apart from salmon, of course, we can get plenty of that - not always as fresh as we might like, but it's fairly cheap.

Most of Australia's food exports go to China and SE Asia, but sooty grunter is not available in commercial quantites.

It's still available here, massive sheep stations are out in the central west up to south of Mt Isa. The sheep are basically bred for their fleece wool but when they get a bit of age about them they go to the meatworks.

Any rams that were born and not going to be used for breeding, were introduced to the castration pliers around two weeks of age these end up at the meatworks as well.


This length on time would tie in with the UK joining what ever the EU was called back in the '70s, both Australia and New Zealand had to find alternative markets for their sheep and lambs.

Crofters here do the same with young rams but they are kept only to about 18 months - this is then called Lewis lamb. The only meat we can get here is bought in from the mainland since we no longer have an abatoir (autocorrect is telling me that that is not how you spell it - slaughterhouse is what I mean) but nobody imports mutton. Everything has to go to the mainland for slaughter which means the market is restricted to sure fire sales. Even beef is only bought in these days in a restricted range of cuts.

This probably all happened under directives from the EU as well. However, let's not get political.

Hello All posting food of yesterday in Dublin
Brunch at great little cafe and bakery:
Soft scrambled eggs, crispy bacon on mashed avo on sourdough toast. Yesterday ate all the toast since previous day half had no effect on BG. Also filling enough to get me through to evening.
Dinner was more Dublin Bay prawns and buttered greens preceded by DB prawn cocktail. Delish. 2 glasses red wine, lots water.

This morning will be returning for same brunch for last time this trip. We fly at teatime so dont arrive Gatwick till 7.30pm so not sure what we will do foodwise, maybe a stop off on the way home or a quick dive into M&S at the airport.

Menu sounds divine for you. I can almost feel your spirits rising as I read your menu. 1 too many breakfast ingredients for me but Dublin sounds nicely foodie for a short break. Maybe I will try to find a way to acquire tickets to Ireland v England rugby sometime.

The Aviva (Lansdowne Road)stadium is about 5 mins from here, son’s closest train station. If you do go make sure to ask me for recommendations in the neighbourhood.

I have used the dehydrator function, and it works very well, but takes the gizmo out of action for understandably long periods. I wanted a chamber, with shelves, as opposed to stacked trays. It also means, when in air fryer mode, we also have multi-shelves/layers.

I've yet to use the rotisserie, despite multiple promises to myself.

MrB is the world's cynic when it comes to multi-purpose gadgets, but he agrees this one (along with the IP and combi-oven) works.

Thanks. It looks impressive, and the price is probably worth it considering it is an air fryer and rotisserie cooker as well as a dehydrator. I have the little Lidl airfryer though so don’t want to double up. We are intending to keep the dehydrator in the garage, out of the way as it’ll be mostly for dog treats and we both have v small kitchens. I’m thinking lower end of the market for now ( we may upgrade later when we’ve put it through its paces!)

I have a Von Chef dehydrator, bought from Amazon but it is trays, not drawers. It works well but takes up space that I can't afford to waste. It has ended up neglected in what should be our lounge, but is actually a dumping space, hidden behind a whole load of other stuff, so I can't reach it to use it. I used it to dry fruit and haven't tried anything more adventurous.

No need to sear. It’ll get a crispy outside without the bother.

Hoping to fast today but ended up eating more than usual!
A 3 Amazon delivery day today, exciting times.
Breakfast a 2 egg cheese omelette around 10am
Lunch tuna muffin melts x 2 with salad leaves and olive oil. Used the new silicone cupcake cases which had just arrived. Coffee chia pudding.
Dinner from the Caldesi’s book which also arrived today. Indian beef patties ( cooked in airfryer ) with salad leaves and cauliflower pilau also from the book. There are some super looking recipes in it.
(3rd Amazon delivery was some origami paper so we can make dinosaurs later in the week when granddaughters are here again)
@Annb I wished we lived closer, I’d buy your dehydrator off you but I expect haulage cost would be prohibitive.

Plenty to ruminate upon today all tied up with food really. Lots of tea for B. NE1 was a forbidden mini cheese and pickle 1 bite sandwich (wholemeal from yesterday's gathering. Obviously food highlight for some time but very small and tiny smear of pickle so shouldn't be any harm. Proper meal was 3 h/b eggs, avocado and tin of mackerel fillets with some cucumber and radishes. NE2 was boned and rolled lamb shoulder salad and about 1/2 dessert spoon of Lidl salted caramel ice cream randomly left in tub. Lamb was for Julie but I didn't actively dislike it as I do leg. Meal was made special not because of the food which was only ok but because No 1 son and his 2 children ate with us. Context of meals may not totally beat contents for me but can ameliorate to some degree.

Can anyone still get mutton. We can, in the right season, get what is called Lewis lamb - slower growing and so older than normal lamb but still not mutton. But I'm told that nobody wants mutton these days and so no-one produces it. It's years since I had mutton - my mother used to buy it, but I haven't noticed any in the last 50 or so years.

It's difficult to get but when you can it is much tastier.

No need at all to sear. To help the outer skin/surface stay moist, I just mist a little oil over, say the chicken skin, as that gives it a nice sheen, when done.

Airfryer chicken thigh/leg - even wing (pre AF, I'd just save wings for stock) is stupendous and so succulent.
