In search of some data really but IMHO very much tied up with this thread. How many of you good folk a) plan your menu each day and b) if you do is it based on carb count or using a tool/app to analyse vitamins, nutrients, cals in and out or c) just what you like to eat that is LC? Is there a poll tool on this forum as I would be very interested in this data. TIA and please feel free to ignore me.
5.1 on the meter. I cant say I did anything different other than have a new gin for my nightly tipple. Will test it further...of all the medicine..could be on to something big!!
So close to McGarrett country..anyone seen @jjraak?
Thanks for the reply . FBG was what it was - taken much closer to previous (last 4 yrs) times. Specifically, I find it hard to get 3 minerals up to rda even knowing foods high in these. By now I don't need carbs but it appears I may need more calories. My cals rarely reach 2k. and the scales back up my app (chronometer) in showing I am in deficit. Plugging that gap is an issue right now - I don't need to lose weight - lost 2 kgs since Good Friday.
There was a snakegame on mine.... it would get longer as it ate eggs
The foods that contain magnesium, manganese and potassium are ones I quite like but apart from avocado are very low cal. I don't eat more as I appear to enjoy/tolerate a very limited subset of the high fat foods. I don't really want to force feed myself just to increase cal intake. I think my best route is to have lots of snacks of the protein kind e.g. baby bels, boiled eggs.I’m not surprised you’ve lost weight, you don’t seem to eat very much at all. Why don’t you eat more?
What are you deficient in? Do you just dislike foods that contain those minerals?
I am going to reply in my usual rambling way! In the early days I planned meals and wrote it all down but after 6 months and getting to a safe HBA1c I figured I had a bank of meals and more importantly had a good understanding of where carbs lurked. But by then I had reduced from under 100g carbs/day to under 50 and now I prefer to be closer to 30g. However, I am not convinced that is wise to keep reducing levels every few months because your body plateaus and demands better a bit like watering the garden every day the plants soon get used to it and wont fight to survive. I am not keen to go for an extreme diet though starches and sweet things are a no no except Lindt 90 or the occasional 10 cal jelly and occasionally berries though I find it hard to just have a few. I dont want to give up a gin and slimline but have as good as given up wine because it affects my BG more and it has to be one or the other As regards nutrition I think I do ok with lean meat, fish or eggs eing my protein and tenderstem brocollo, lots of baby spinach, aubergine, few tomatoes, salad, celeriac for mash and cauliflower for rice, alsored pepper and onion sparingly. I do t like cream or yogurt but use good quality butter and have some cheese. Dairy levels need to be low for me for other reasons. In search of some data really but IMHO very much tied up with this thread. Thanks for that. Oddly, my app has my magnesium intake well below rda but I don't get cramp - bet I do now I have written that. I clearly analyse in way more detail than most - does me no good though. I actually sit and plan on my app - carbs, cals, vits and mins each morning right now - you guys will have seen the charts. Hopefully I will soon get a better feel for what is a well formulated diet now - stopped working about a year ago - not bg- and is hard work rectifying. Glad your Steph is ok - it took me months to regain all the weight I lost after wisdom teeth extracted.A) Nope, plan is limited to taste buds on the day.
B) Carbs only..and then just a rough estimate.
C) all the way, baby..
Life's to short to be counting and measuring all the minute details.
rule of thumbs for me..and it is simply .. veg, meats, cheese, cream, selected snacky thing so i don't binge on bad sugary things
anything else
5g per 100 and under..in she goes
5-10 ..i weigh up if it's worth it..taste wise or spike wise..(yep no saint)
10g+.. back on the shelf and i move swiftly along.
For me, its ONLY because of my DX that i pay any attention to the foods etc.
my bloods are looking to be in better shape given last times FULL blood test report.
(due again in june/july i think/hope)
As long as mine are within bounds..(and all but one is )..i'm reasonably happy with my progress..
The only thing i do concern myself with is fibre, so make sure i have seeds, crackers (dunelms) , chia seeds and veg
to keep the intake high-ish.
and as it's a noted side effect of T2d for some, i take a b12 tablet each morning.
add in the magnesium for the cramps and i'm done..
No, it is helpful to see what/how other people deal with this issue. The definition of a safe HBa1c is something I struggle with for myself - I think it will always feel it is just below wherever I am.I am going to reply in my usual rambling way! I take daily a good quality B complex, high SR vit C and high dose cod liver oil capsules just to be sure.
I am a complete technophobe and wouldnt know how to use apps and things to caculate macros but other than occasionally dipping into the Carbs & Cals book which is in my handbag I fly by the seat of my pants. I dont think this is much help but I did warn you!
It would have been easier if I had just said I take an educated guess at carbs!! Time may come when I have to be more precise. I think you are probably a perfectionist in all aspects of your life, nothing wrong with that but please remember to be kind to yourself too. Best wishes. No, it is helpful to see what/how other people deal with this issue. Thanks @geefull really useful finding out how you go about this. I think I have a bank of foods that are LC but they don't necessarily combine into meals or make IF and eat, wait 2 hrs then test workable. I think I would be much better grazing all day and forgetting all about testing. If I have a meal I am always aware of the need to test and very often curb what I eat anticipating the test.good afternoon all
was 4.7 this morning
after the last three lovely days it poured all day here ( in fact here, there and everywhere inbetween ), for the 450 mile round trip we had to make todayHappily we're home now though and chilling with a big cup of coffee
@ianpspurs I'm a bit 'detail oriented' (as you are I know), I did spend more time analysing everything when I started, now I have a 'bank' of stuff I can combine and repeat in meals. I still keep a food diary though not in the same detail, I don't use an online app. but do use a program that helps me calculate calories and ratios etc. If I'm making something new or trying a recipe I'll use the information I have to produce a figure for a portion of the recipe and tweak as I goI find that my calculated RDA information is somewhat unreliable because of the differences in the level of nutrient information available for input.
Hope your day is treating you gently everyone

Edit: Not too sue about almonds and dark chocolate. Have had a go at eating some almond butter lately - not a fan. Think that may need to be buried in a smoothie to work for me.
The dark chocolate was a pain. We bought some LC flavourings as a way forward but a period of illnesses for Julie and me has stopped us making them.Sounds like your plan of lots of small snacks is one that might work for you. I do hope so. I haven’t seen you having CCBs recently, was the dark chocolate in that too much as well?
Good Afteringnoon Ladies and Gentlemen.
Courtesy of modern technology I followed the directions of my motorcycle sat nag and ended up I know not where in Cambridgeshire, found somewhere to rest my head.
This morning I woke up to a 4.4, not a good level for motorcycle riding, anyway after a full English breakfast along with toasted jam sandwiches, I got my level up to 8.7, safe to ride.
After finding out where I was in Cambridgeshire I navigated my way to the A14 and my planned route home, being a total believer in my sat nag I plugged it in or more precisely on set the preplanned route home up. This route takes in such places a Alyesbury. Thame, Stadhampton and H's cafe. And blindly followed the sat nag.
50 minutes later and 50 miles of the intended route I thought something is not right.
Needless to say the A1M, M25 and M4 are such pleasant roads to ride on.
I arrive home to be greeted my Mrs J telling me orf for getting home early.
For sale one Garmin sat nag.
6.1 again. Too much low carb moussaka too late in the day. Another late dinner at gone 8pm not helping my fbs. Needed to get car loaded with rubbish and waited for hubby to come home from work. Hate eating then doing jobs.
Just sharing my social media post.
Today would have been my dad's 90th birthday. I just wanted to post something in memory of this lovely man.
My dad passed away suddenly at the age of 54. A massive heart attack. He was on the list for a heart op. The letter confirming his op date came too late sadly, a few weeks after his demise.
While he was alive my dad struggled with his health both physically and mentally. My mum and dad went through some very hard times. I don't think a lot was understood back then about mental health and there was definitely a stigma attached to it. They struggled along much of the time but got through.
My dad had a hard childhood, evacuated to Blackpool in the war from Salford. I do think this had something to do with his wellbeing later in life and that's what the psychiatrist at the time said. Events can have a massive effect. Mum and dad didn't have a lot of money either which in itself brings worries. Dad was often out of work. I feel very sad when I think about that. But then I think about the happy times. Mum and dad laughed a lot (when dad was well). They enjoyed a game of bingo together. They rarely won. Just before my 21st birthday, when they told me they couldn't afford a party for me (which I was absolutely fine with) they won £50. Now back then that was a lot of money. I remember them coming home and throwing all the money up in the air and dancing on it. What a joyous moment that was. And do you know what dad said. 'This is for your party'. They went out and bought booze. Lots of booze. Set up a table in the corner of our living room. He had a 'head barman' sign around his neck and we partied into the early hours with all my friends. The photo attached is the last photo I have with dad, from my 21st birthday. That was the 6th June. He passed away suddenly on 6th September the same year .
He was a very loving man. He was a great dad. And I think about him often. I wish he could have met my amazing hubby and seen his wonderful 2 grandchildren and shared all their life experiences. How proud he would be. And to see my daughter so happy with her wife. And then there's our grandaughter . She has brought incredible joy. I'm absolutely positive she could have swept all his cares and troubles away.
So today is the day we all say happy 90th dad. Hope you and mum have a great day celebrating . thinking of you.
