Hi
Just back from review with diabettic nurse. I was really pleased with results..... and thought she would be to. Hbac1 = 43... wow... from 101 three months ago. As soon as she found out I low carb she wants me to increase them, even though Dr was for low carbing. She did say it will be a more sustainable way of eating and said it will probably mean she will need me to have another tablet added to my list. She wants me to slowly add them and she will receive test me in 3 months.
No pat on the back or well done.

I just wonder what treatment could possibly be prescribed for a person who is most likely going to have normal Hba1c and blood glucose readings.
I suspect that she is trying to worry you into doing the wrong thing - it has been done to me over and over and I agreed to it because I did not have the confidence to tell them what to do with the carbs.
The sustainability of low carb eating surely can't be an issue. Left to myself I'd have been low carbing for over 40 years and might still have a slender waist and no problems with weight - which is always my fault despite me constant claim that I can't eat carbs and maintain my weight - always me doing it wrong.

Poor grammar, bullying and drunks.
You have made a stonking difference! Very well done. You already know what has improved your HbA1c so carry on doing what you are doing. I got similar advice and chose to ignore it because it was MY choice.
Health care professionals sometimes forget that theirs is an advisory role, it is the patient who makes the decisions as to what course of action they personally take.

I got my HbA1C down from 99 to 43. The last diabetes nurse I saw said "well done". She also does intermittent fasting herself and favours a lifestyle and low carb to treating type 2 diabetes.

You have done amazingly well.. A huge congratulations from me !
I am at a loss trying to understand your nurse ? More medication ?
Your results are fabulous.. you carry on what you've been doing and don't accept any more pills, she need to explain why she wants you to take them.

Well done and congratulations to you that's a brilliant result.

Edited to say I will never understand how someone thinks that they know what someone else will do.
And
I moan about my DN but once she saw that I was losing weight and feeling better she stopped the meds threat and was instead very positive and supportive.

Well done you. You will know by now whether low carbing is sustainable for you. I doubt you'd have done quite that well if it wasn't.

Brilliant result! Carry on as you are, it’s working. Why would you follow the nurses advise and make yourself worse? It’s crazy!

When I worked in insurance - we had people called "underwriters" there job was to write insurance risks- sounds easy enough - however part of their job was to turn down risks- i.e. to " not underwrite" - they found that very hard to do, it was the antithesis of their job.

Unfortunately when it comes to the treatment of diabetes through diet alone, every one of us is telling a doctor or nurse to " not doctor or not nurse" after all if you don't need their pills and potions - what are they actually for??

I don't think these reactions are deliberate, simply part of the normal human condition which is to " do " something - even if that very thing is rubbish and to hang on for all you are worth to what you have always done. That is why it takes so long to turn opinion round and why the actual change in diabetes practice will come from a few doctors and experts leading the way and pressure from the grass roots in the other direction.

If anyone had reacted to my results in that fashion I would probably have told them exactly where to shove their advice coupled with a lecture on " you should be ashamed of yourself" Fortunately you know your results are excellent and so do we !

Congratulations :)

Fab results - really well done! Unfortunately many docs and nurses still aren't able to get their heads round the fact that nobody NEEDS carbs. They've been taught the Eatwell plate. They've ben taught that everyone needs carbs - they've been brainwashed and sometimes can't accept the evidence in front of their faces that YOU HAVE SUCCEEDED!

Once you understand they are reacting according to their training and that their training was shall we say misguided or out of date then you can have sympathy for them while NOT following their advice.

Why do they advocate upping carbs and taking a pill to mitigate upping the carbs? - because they don't want anyone to feel different or have to eat anything other than the Eatwell plate they've been taught.

But if you are happy low carbing then be assured that many people have happily eaten low carb for very many years and in fact their is no real evidence for the Eatwell plate being the best for you as there have been no studies comparing a properly low carb or ketogenic diet with a 'normal' diet or the Eatwell diet.

First, well done on your HbA1c !
Diabetic Specialist Nurses can tend to get a bad rap on this forum. Mainly because they talk out of their....................
poor experience.
They tend to have so many preconceptions e.g. low-carb is not sustainable. Utter piffle.
I don't get how getting better control on low-carb means you need more medication. That truly baffles me.
What medications are we talking about and what did she'add' ?

Simply learn not to mind your DSN. Just smile and nod. Then ignore if appropriate ;)

Excellent news and a great effort on your part.

I would suggest you go lightly with your DN, she is just following the current dogma, which she is supposed to do.... even if your Doc is a little more understanding of what you've done.

You clearly have found a path that works for you, we've seen the results. A number of folk in this situation don't make an issue of it, keep calm and Carry On.

You have done so well!!!

I'm not a doctor or a nurse but what the DN told you makes no sense. In your place I would stick to my guns!
