Lovely day out in Bakewell today. It felt odd not to leave with the obligatory Bakewell Pudding (definitely not tart!), breaking with a tradition of over 15 years. I might just have to try and master a LC version now! We had a lovely (but eye wateringly expensive) coffee in an Austrian coffee shop. However, I was disappointed when I spoke with someone about possible low carb options next time we visit. They specialise in Austrian produce and particularly sausages, which they serve in a roll with ketchup, mustard etc. They even make a point about their sausages being gluten free. But when I asked if it would be possible to have a little salad on the side, instead of the roll, I got a funny look and the bizarre answer "If we did that for one customer, then everyone would want it"! They offer several sandwiches with salad (including a salad sandwich!) on the menu! Bizarre!

B: Almond Chia pudding with mixed berries
Mid morning: Almond milk cappuccino
L: Picnic by the riverside in Bakewell. Tuna melt muffin, chicken tikka skewer, slice of emmental, some mixed nuts.
Mid afternoon: Coffee and a smuggled in LC choc cookie
D: High % pork sausage, cauli cheese, huge pile of buttered spring greens and a very small hm Yorkshire pud from the freezer. Decaf coffee.

It's pretty simple as it is just a variation on LC lemonade which I've made before. It's either 1 ltr soda or fizzy water to the juice of 1 lemon and 2 tablespoons Powdered sweetener. It has to be powdered as you are not heating the mix to dissolve it. You can add more if you want it sweeter but I think 2 tbsp is enough. To make ginger ale you just add ginger juice. Peel and grate ginger root or you can blitz it and strain it through a bit muslin. Add it gradually but I reckon the ginger juice should he the same amount as the powdered sweetener.
Dead easy - put in a jug and stir.
Sounds lovely, I need to try this and use it for a Moscow Mule. ☺️

I was wondering about lc ginger ale but I’m sure I’ve never seen it. I think we should ask @maglil55 if she would like a new project - maybe soda water fresh ginger and lemon juice would make an acceptable alternative?
Angostura used to be common - when old chaps drank pink gin but have only seen it occasionally in larger supermarkets recently. My dad used to drink tonic with angostura and a slither of lemon peel if he wanted a refreshing non alcoholic drink.

We have not only one bottle of Angosturas, but two. Not sure how that happened.

Evenin’ All,

Seems like DAYS since I’ve posted on here.
Mainly scram eggs, cheesy mince and chook curry, with an accidental ingestion of maltesers 2 days ago, and a couple of squares of 70% each of the other days.

Slight error of judgement - used a tin of chopped tomatoes in the curry. Enjoyed it (several days in a row). But the ol’ hand ‘rheumatism’ came back. So no more toms for me.

Today:
Scram egg and sausage
Fab cheese and ham omelette at local garden centre
Cold meat

Just 4 working days and 5 sleeps til we head off up the A1 to self catering cott near Edinburgh.
With Ma In Law.
Gonna be v interesting.
Me, Mr B, Mam, dogs 1 and 2, and our luggage in the car. I am prioritising dogs and laptops over clothes (there is a washing machine).
Jasmin (pup no. 3) will be staying with an Auntie, on account of incomplete toilet training, and carpet in hol cott. We will miss her tremendously.

@DJC3 - Iceland have got some very good shellfish dishes which make an excellent fishy pasta with oomi noodles. Wild shrimp in a tomato and chilli sauce and their Frutti de mare in a tomato and herb sauce are really good. Christmas time when they get their luxury range in there are bargains to be had - mmm lobster. I think it a case of I go looking for things your regular Iceland shopper wouldn't be interested in. They do a few of these seafood mixes but some are more carby. Anyway, today. Bed 6.2 FBG 6. I'm actually starting to feel a bit more human. Had a go at tidying up a bit but only lasted 30 mins then had to rest as the boys had swimming lessons.
B. Wasn't 100% so usual TAG with ADOC and I gave the Tesco high protein bread toasted another go but with pate. No ill effects today so it must have been the lurgy yesterday.
L. Was at swimming but was really hungry when I came back so made some salami crisps in the micro. I'd forgotten how addictive they were. It was late on so had them with a campari and soda.
D. Rib eye with veggie chips , 4 asparagus, mushrooms, 4 cherry tomatoes and a fried egg.
First time in days I've not felt exhausted in the evening.

Ahhh, memories of my barmaid days - the elderly gents and their pink gins or whisky with Crabbies green ginger. A swish of a few drops of angostura around the glass and shake out any excess before adding the gin.
The other favoured order from the elderly gents is one a lot of you won't be familiar with - a wee heavy. It was a very strong, malty ale in a smaller bottle. It was the subject of a Bill Barclay (a Scottish comedian) song which was an alternative to the 12 days of Christmas and the 1st day his true love gave him a wee heavy and a half pint. Drinks got progressively stronger until you ended on 12 Alka seltzer. It was a peculiarly Scottish drink - Fowlers wee heavy. There were Blue Lagoons in that song too. To think I used to have the odd Blue Lagoon as a tipple.

Cooking beef overnight is defo the way to go. Very low and very slow 60C is lowest our oven goes - only ever done it with large rib joints. 4 rib joints are quite functional done that way.
ETA: We think small joints aren't worth the effort so these days only the larger ones when 2 or all 3 boys and grandchildren come.

Ah I remember you posting a while ago about the overnight cooking. I’m going to have to give it a go. I think you’re probably right about the larger joints being better too.

The pink gins and whisky Macs bring back my barmaid memory days too.
Wee heavy is a new one one me but I remember Blue Lagoons being the height of sophistication!

First day in Cornwall yesterday at Watergate Bay which we have been coming to for twenty years. Yesterday’s food was

Dinner: Asian fried squid followed by Mussels Menieure few skinny chips.
1 large G&ST (I bring my own mixers) and large glass wine.
Followed by a blissful sleep in the oh so comfy super King bed.

Sounds like a great start. The food choices and holiday ambience appear to have agreed with you bigly judging by sleep and fbs. I hope that continues and we see pics of you in the MPGA baseball cap:angelic:

Good evening all. Once again I’m way behind. Must do better.

Been away over the weekend so eating out.

Saturday was a small lunch of M&S Pork crackling with dinner of bunless bacon cheeseburger with onion and mayonnaise at Five Guys. Earlier in the day I succumbed to a Hotel Chocolat hot chocolate with cocoa whip. Previous consumption revealed a larger than normal, but acceptable BG rise. This time I was wearing a Libre. Oh dear, should definitely be on the ‘don’t go anywhere near’ list - peaked at 9.6!

Yesterday was one large meal - late lunch/early dinner. Had a bunless cheeseburger at Handmade Burger co with sides of halloumi fries and chicken wings. Won’t be going back - distinctly average at best and overpriced for what arrived on the plate. Ate some extra thick double cream back at the hotel.

Today had a small bag of pork crackling at a meeting at which the offerings were not LC friendly (colleague declared proudly that he’d bought some healthy options to go with the sandwiches - pineapple, grapes and quinoa!). Dinner was at Nando’s - two plain legs and a side of grilled halloumi. Followed by some Hotel Chocolat supermilk hazelnut.

Edited to insert missed out word.
