What have you eaten today? (Low carb forum)

Had a few lockdown mice come in the last couple of years in a row, and had a few 3am stake-outs. I caught a few and let them go over the river, which is probably not as humane as I'd like to think as probably became dinner for something else very quickly, yet
I once rescued a pretty little mouse outside the back door before the cat got it. I picked it up between my fingers and it over arched itself and flung its teeth into my finger. Surprised I let go of it but it clung on dangly from my finger by its teeth! I sent it packing to tell its kin no more rescues would be forthcoming and arranged an immediate Tetanus top up. My worst nightmare is rats they really scare the life out of me.
To yesterday.
Brekkie slice LC toast, good butter, copious tea.
Lunch was egg mayo from supermarket with Little Gem leaves. Realised the huge difference between bought in egg mayo and that made at home. Never again unless I’m desperate. Made a batch of spiced biscuits for DIL’s first Mothers Day (a fave of hers) but they just weren’t as good as usual. Took longer to cook, suspected oven, then Mr P came in and we both tested and though not horrible agreed they weren’t as usual. Wondering if the mixed spice has gone a bit musty now. So disappointing, don’t know whether to gift them or not now.
Supper yesterday chunky cod fingers and green veg.

Ah that’s disappointing, like you say, it could be the spices have gotten old

Oh no on being bitten, ungrateful beggar! (In reality probably terrified and lashed out)

Tell you a story.

One night I was working burning the midnight oil, well it was about 3am and it was ever so quiet, and I’d been on high alert because of the recent mouse invasion.

I heard a little sound by the floorboard (raised floors here, old terrace) and thought oh no, here we go again.

Of course in that moment even though a mouse is no threat I’m on high alert now, heart raised, hairs on neck ready to do something - no idea what, I’ve tried chasing a mouse before, they are far too quick for me.

and then I heard it, a bang on my rear window…

then another bang, then another

bang bang bang…

Felt instantly like someone was there, or some… thing.

I hesitated and then turned around reverting to a child, will it be a werewolf? or will it be some hideous thing I know doesn’t exist as a rational adult….

and there It was, aggressively trying to bash its way through the window. In full glory, a huge rat, as large as a kitten.

I scrambled for my phone to try and take a picture of this impressive beast, as it lept on the windowsil looked at me and then ran off as soon as it arrived.

I came to the conclusion along with the pest control guy that it was probably being chased by the neighbours cat as it was quite unusual behaviour.

I sometimes pass the window at night now with a watchful eye.

Was like something out of a horror film!

Cold sausages for breakfast as had to cook them all yesterday.

Breakfast was lamb tagine.

2nd meal will bed salad of duck breast and other raw veg that I can find in the fridges.

Don't know why I have this aversion to spiders. I have had it as long as I can remember - even as a 3 year old I couldn't touch the colour plates of spiders in my grandfather's "Science of Life" books which I was allowed to look at back then. Made it quite diffficult to get the page turned over so I couldn't see it any more. Mum and my brother used to laugh at me but I'm pretty sure that Dad was, at the very least, wary. He never said so but he never was the one to pick up spiders to put them out. He was always "too busy". I think Neil also dislikes them but Alistair will quite happily pick them up or even allow a tarantula to crawl on him.

Morning all, hope all well, apart from nightmares about small fluffy creatures! My BIL’s big fluffy dog has arrived for the weekend, so that will keep us busy, already been out for first walk.
Yesterday
B Yog, blueberries,seeds
L Courgette and leek soup, scrambled egg and mushrooms
D HM turkey burger, no bun, salad and coleslaw

Oh, this should have postsed yesterday, apparently I forgot to hit the Post Reply button. Today I had a very short night between having to get up early, and an alarming Libre.
But we worked very hard for 3 hours in the house of my friend, and then went for another swim. We wanted to do salt water again but it was low tide and the stairs were too short, so we went to our usual spot closeto home. Much colder than the sea, with the frost we've had during the past couple of nights.

So far, I've eaten some deviled eggs my friend provided, and part of the dry sausage my friend gave all 3 of us as a thank you :)
Tonight will be the last of my andijviestamppot, and tomorrow will be my birthday party, which will likely be a bit messy, diabetes wise, which is fine, if I plan for it.
Thanks everyone!
In the end, I was just about to reheat my stamppot when a couple of neighbours popped in with a bottle of booze.
It's now 3:30 am, and I don't think dinner will happen now. :hilarious:
BG at 4.9 with a straight line according to Libre, I'm a happy birthday bunny with wonderful friends, and I'll have some chicory and hummus and pork scratchings with aioli before turning off the lights I think.
Not surprisingly, nice big hangover today, that'll teach me getting drunk and not eating. Also had my cleaner late morning, which meant the alarm went off way too early after going to bed at 5 am or so.
They say wisdom comes with age, but it's very clear that 47 isn't aged enough for this particular wisdom to come. :hilarious:

At some point during the night neighbour-down-the-road and I decided we wanted to go swimming in salt water for a change, and we would do so today. I'm pretty proud we actually did, even though we were muttering 'IdontwantodothisIdontwanttodothisIreallydontwanttodothis' all the way down the long stairs in the harbour of Harlingen.
It was a lovely swim, salt water feels so much better than fresh! Shame it's a 30 minute drive.

I had a lovely meal of andijviestamppot (raw endive mixed with cauliflower purée, reheated in the microwave) with melted cheese cubes and a couple of thin rashers of bacon today. :hungry:

Very busy day tomorrow, with the alarm going some 3 hours earlier than I usually wake up. First my neighbours (the swimming one and the garden one) and I will help out a friend of mine who is drowning in the mess in her house and now panicking. Between the 4 of us we should be able to do a lot in 2 or 3 hours.
Late afternoon neighbour-in-the-garden and I will have a financial adviser visiting. The situation as it is now is pretty much illegal, and we have some wild ideas we want to talk over.

I love mice, yes, they do bite & painfully hang on if rescuing without gloves. I purposely kill them, never use killer traps only humane & take them for a long drive away. When I lived rurally in France, we had quite a few visitors, some caught & released in the house by my cat. Did have a giver mouse, as I mentioned, used to put horse chestnuts in the corners & along the fire front. A mouse gathered them over time & I found them all behind the bathroom door upstairs. Also, I always had a clementine every night, I'd put the pips in the bin beside me. When I emptied the bins, the pips had gone, very odd. I found them when I went to put some boots on one day, they were all in one boot. :hilarious: Only creatures I really can't stand are spiders & maggots, anything else I'm fine with.

Easy dinner tonight, using the remaining stuffing mix from the mushrooms made more tomatoey to make a spag bol with black bean spaghetti.

If there was a shock, horror emoji it would be here.

On the grounds that I didn't have another option on the app, it was a "Like" but I really wanted a "Yikes"!

Had a hungry day today
B: 2 scrambled eggs anda chunk of cheddar
4 sqs 70% dark chocolate while on long car journey, was lovely and sunny though!
L: emmental and cold meat and coleslaw. A supermarket éclair with extra cream
Mid afternoon a packet of chicken crackling
D: venison burger with salad.

Nearly a migraine and feeling very cold.. maybe something is brewing

I agree, sometimes find myself looking for a confused reaction or eek!

Appetite has indeed picked up after a carbier (but still under 75g of carbs a day) week, funnily id stalled in weight loss, even went up a few lb for two weeks, maybe I was eating too little or something, as I dropped a lot this week (6lbs)

Plant based shawarma for lunch with salad.

Dinner is probably the last of the bacon and eggs.

Feeling a bit rough today, had to sleep a bit after school pick up, hoping just broken up sleep this week catching up with me rather than a bug, who wants one of those!!

Happy weekends everybody

I noticed a dropped word in my post, I 'don't' kill them!! Even when they've been in the kitchen drawer & done this to my favourite cheese plane...no pics of the pastry brushes, as they didn't survive! ;)

Mouse eaten!.jpg

I used for for the parm on my dinner & hence the pic as we'd been talking about the little darlings.

Hope all that are under the weather, feel better fast.

…What are you gonna do

Oh mouse, fair play about not killing them.

Blimey they took a liking to that cheese plane!

I would be apoplectic if they had gone near my kitchen drawers. I was putting stuff inside bags and wiping every surface, bleaching the place from orbit every morning when I wasn’t sure where they were going in the house or where they were coming from. Maybe a bit over paranoid but the thought of them running about leaving germs everywhere made me shudder. To the point I couldn’t be bothered with the morning ritual any more so I ended up installing a camera in the kitchen and never seen any in there since making sure I kept the door shut. difficult if out in the sticks and things are more open plan, older properties.

Dinner was indeed an odd combo of bacon, and weirdly some cheap coleslaw from the shop as it was almost given away (I should really make my own)

I hate spiders too ... Last house I had a velux in the bedroom, couldn't open it, as there were little black & white jumping spiders around on the roof that had made it in on occasion.
Evening @jessj.

They were probably zebra spiders. Those little fellas are harmless to people.
They're actually rather pretty when viewed close up and they have the most remarkable courtship behaviour.

Evening @ravensmitten.

Yes, spiders have had a bad press. These little chaps (chapesses too) are nowhere near as fearsome as is sometimes made out.

Agree, I’d maybe have a different opinion of them if I lived in Australia for instance but the ones here are mainly harmless.

Still though like a lot of fears it’s not a rational thing, I don’t mind them but understand why people get spooked.

yum, stuffed mushrooms!

I prefer them to mice! spiders not mushrooms, although I think mice are precious, just not in the house, (unless pets.)

Had a few lockdown mice come in the last couple of years in a row, and had a few 3am stake-outs. I caught a few and let them go over the river, which is probably not as humane as I'd like to think as probably became dinner for something else very quickly, yet I guess it wasn't me directly landing the blow, so felt better about it. They seem to have stopped visiting after I went around sealing a few hidden gaps when the gas pipes were updated, I didn't know there was a hole to the crawlspace behind the meter. I think they used to come wandering over from the immediate neighbours now and then and not find any food laying around and go back, used to have some talc in a corner to monitor if they revisited. Also, I "borrowed" another neighbours cat one day to have a wander around the house and leave some scent, not that I had a say in the matter the cheeky beggar came through the kitchen window, waltzed right into the front room and sat on the table by the television watching the birds on springwatch. So I thoroughly took advantage of the situation and any subsequent visits.
Evening @ravensmitten.

Both rats and mice are appealing with their cute little blackcurrant eyes. Rats in particular are so intelligent. Unfortunately, wild rats may have come from the sewers and could carry Weil's disease and other nasties, so they are a health risk.

I can just picture your feline visitor. We were once adopted by four homeless Siamese cats. The seasonwatch series were their favourite TV programmes.

Evening @PenguinMum.

Agree wholeheartedly. Almost no shop-bought item tastes half as good as food you make yourself.
