T2 HbA1c results

I was diagnosed during the last week of April this year following a routine medical exam. On the day, finger prick tests of 104 and 105 were recorded. The following day, I was sent for emergency bloods, and a few days later diabetes was confirmed with an HbA1c reading of 107.

My follow-up HbA1c bloods were done in the first week of September (a gap of 4 months and 2 weeks after the original test). My reading is now 32. My doctor actually called me with the results and said in all his years of practice he couldn't remember a patient with a drop so big in such a short time

My first hba1c test was 135 on 29 Nov last year and my GP called me for an appointment after he saw the result, the second test was taken on 14 Mar the result was 41 but no call or feedback from my GP since I met him last Dec.

Ignoring that you're raining on my parade by posting an even more impressive set of numbers than mine (), I find that to be so poor from your GP. You've done amazingly well in such a short space of time.

My GP was so encouraging in his call. I worked a decade as a counsellor, and I know the potential benefits of a bit of positive reinforcement when we're going through these things in life. It's a professional courtesy that takes 2 minutes to deliver

Diagnosed in December '22 with a reading of 92, went last week for another blood test and now 28. Going for another in 4 months time to see if i am in remission which would be nice ! All done with metformin and diet which has also seen a weight loss of 38kg.

I've just been diagnosed (scary) and my hba1c is 65

Hi! I was 69 when diagnosed in June. 3 months later, sensible healthy eating (plenty of fruit, veg, whole grains, nuts & seeds) and exercise. Down to a healthy 37 and 3 stone lighter.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in April 2003 whilst in hospital undergoing surgery. A member of the hospital medical team performed a finger prick test and recorded >18 mmol/L. Just before discharge, I was told my HbA1c was 110 mmols/mol and issued with a glucometer, test strips and medication.

As my general health and dietary intake improved, my meter readings came down; the highest HbA1c result on record at my GP practice is 59 mmol/mol
Most recent result in September 2022 was 44 mmol/mol. My annual HbA1c test is due this month.

Today's HbA1c result 35 mmol/mol. I'm so pleased.

Logging my results on this forum, it must be said, helps to keep me incentivised, especially when readings drift upwards due factors beyond our control like infection.

Wow, I think 28 is the lowest I've ever seen.
Just be aware they may not count it as remission if you are still on meds. You might want to discuss dropping or reducing the metformin with them.

I hope so. Keeping BG levels in check is a daily challenge, but well worth the effort.

I really enjoy my food, it must be said, and don't feel deprived with a LCHF lifestyle. It helps to focus on the many delicious foods we can safely eat, as I know you do, and not dwell too much on those high carb 'goodies' that we really shouldn't have.

I have been dropped from 3 x 500mg Metformin and 1 x 10mg Dapaglliflozin a day to just 1x 500mg Metformin a day since that reading.

Nine years ago, I was diagnosed with an HbA1c > 100. Was put on Metformin, which lowered it to the mid 60s. When in 2019 I was handed a prescription for Gliclazide and test strips I decided that there should be another solution. I started intermittent fasting (IF) and lost 10 kg. The test strips came in handy as they showed me very soon that this is working. At the end of 2019 my HbA1c was 42 and I came off medication.
Since then I've continued this regime and it will soon be 4 years that, apart from the first time, my HbA1c has come back in the 40s, and below 48 mmol/mol, which according to NHS (at least in Scotland) is in remission.

Well, the short answer is metformin.

In December 2018, I was advised to wean myself off gliclazide after some 15 years. To compensate, my metformin dose was increased from 3 x 500 mgs to 1000 mgs twice daily. This higher dose caused diarrhoea on rising most mornings. I was told it would settle given time. It didn't.

My practice nurse seemed uninterested but, apart from the inconvenience, I was concerned about possible nutrient loss, so sought advice from my GP about reducing the dose. The HbA1c test was performed approx. 5 weeks after halving my evening dose. Currently, I'm taking 3 x 500 mgs metformin.

Yes. I found it effective, even after I'd halved the daily dose to 40 mgs. Unlike metformin, the effects of which are cumulative, gliclazide works within hours. Over some 15 years of use, I was not aware of side effects, but some patients complain of weight gain.

Please be aware that gliclazide works chiefly by stimulating the amount of insulin produced by the pancreas. If insulin resistance rather than insulin deficiency is the principal concern, then gliclazide may make things worse in the long run. Back in 2003 when I was first prescribed gliclazide, this potential drawback was never mentioned. We now know most, if not all Type 2s, already have ample insulin circulating, so 'flogging' and 'dead horses' spring to mind. For this reason, I was advised to wean myself off the drug in December 2018.

That said, some patients have been prescribed gliclazide for more than 30 years without apparent effects to the pancreas.
