Well, it's been quite a couple of days.
I took all my food to the event in Stornoway - everyone seemed to enjoy it, so that was OK but, despite the special request for soup, very few people had it and I had half a big pot to bring home again. Somebody brought some chicken drumsticks so I had one of those. Didn't really enjoy it though. Due to a mix up, someone else also brought along some egg mayo rolls and some cheese and tomato rolls, so there were quite a few both of those and my sandwiches left over. I put out some of the macaroni cheese in little dishes with the cheesy pastries and they disappeared rapidly but, when I wasn't in the kitchen some of the children went and asked for more (there were 2 large trays of the stuff on top of the stove) but the person who was in the kitchen said there wasn't any more and the kids went away disappointed. The cupcakes almost didn't make it out of the kitchen - some of the children saw that they were there waiting to be put out when the savouries were finished with and just did a run past, grabbing a cake as they went. I put a stop to that, refilled the plates and found that one or two of the mothers just went in to get cakes for their kids! I hid the plates in boxes and the mothers found them. I gave up at that point and just put the remaining plates out. I have to admit - I was not amused. No wonder some of the kids don't know how to behave! Rant over.
The upshot was that I had to take home a lot of sandwiches, some spicy veg spread, macaroni cheese and lentil soup. I also had to take a lady and her daughter to their home with a large keyboard, restricting my options for carrying left-over food. I piled it all in the boot and gave up one seat to the keyboard. Unfortunately, as we were going along I heard a sliding sound from the boot but didn't investigate. Rather than take all that unwanted food home I decided to take it to No 2 son's house so that he could make use of it (his kids are always ready to eat). On opening the boot I found that what had been sliding was the pot of soup, despite the large roasting try that was holding it, and it had tipped over on its side, spilling most of the contents on the carpet of the boot. My son literally shovelled it up off the floor and dumped it to the side of the drive whereupon 3 dogs and a couple of cats scoffed it enthusiastically. Neil and I spent quite a lot of time and energy cleaning the carpet, the tool basket and the wheelchair yesterday. I don't think Neil was very pleased, but he took it well.
He had already proved his worth by managing to salvage my insulin pen which was damaged by a broken insulin cartridge (I hadn't realised that they were broken but in fact, the whole pack of 5 cartridges were damaged and leaking when under pressure from the pen, admitting air into the cartridge and breaking into little bits of plastic inside the pen. He managed to get a lot of the plastic out using a fine probe but although it is working, it is very stiff and I think it won't last long. Luckily I managed to get a replacement pen today for when it does give out. Well, draw a line under it all and move on.
I actually got around to having my steak yesterday with some fried tomatoes. Lovely! Just the one meal about 3 pm. Lots of tea, of course.
Today I had the remainder of the sausage dish from a couple of days ago - sausages, tomatoes, onion and a carrot (had run out of squash) with some red cabbage. And more tea. That's me for the rest of the day, apart from more tea, of course.
