    Yorkshire Haverbread

Yorkshire Haverbread is a soft flatbread made from oats. It differs from say the Cumbrian version which is crispier. Being soft, it is very useful for making rolls. They are easy to make and you can put in whatever filling you want. Here is a link to the history and to some recipes...

    Very thin and crispy pizza

I have one of these every week in a moroccan style bar and they are excellent. Furthermore, they can be made by anyone and, for most type 2s, diabetes friendly. The secret is, to use wholegrain tortilla wraps as the base. There are two ways to cook these, either in an oven or in a skillet and...

    Cycling for enjoyment

Cycling is dominated in the UK by road racing bikes. Enthusiasts are hell bent on improving their PBs and giving it all they've got. And that often on roads with heavy traffic. Some young men take an alternative path and go in for difficult, and sometimes dangerous, off road routes. Thrilling...

Controlling HBA1c with diet and exercise

When I was diagnosed a couple of years ago, I started a regime of weight loss, improved diet and daily exercise. I lost 17% of my weight, became more active and returned to normal BG levels. The interesting question became, were the improved BG levels temporary or permanent? Was I producing more...

    Detached from reality

Yesterday Nick Clegg talked about mental health, "I want us to be able to talk about, analyse and treat depression just as we treat diabetes." Last year the All Party Group in the House of Commons stated: "The overall picture is of ‘poor, fragmented, expensive and patchy care’ despite £1million...

    90 mins of bliss

Exercise doesn't have to be torture. Took me 90 mins to cycle the 20km around Derwent reservoir and I enjoyed every minute of it on this sunny day. The above is a web shot but that's exactly what it was like. Relaxed, only a little up and down, great scenery, sunshine and fresh air.

    Diabetic Microalbuminuria

Does anyone have experience of this diabetic complication? Although there are a few other causes, diabetes can damage the kidneys in such a way that protein leaks out into the urine. My last urine test showed that my ACR (albumin creatinine ratio) was 6.4, regarded as statistically significant...

    Cycling

Over the months I have seen the benefits of exercise on BG levels. It took me a while to build up to a little rowing and then some cycling on an exerciser. Recently however, I have been doing much more on the bike and have felt able to train harder, though I am hardly a cyclist. It's just 2 x 15...

Tacx do a number of bike exercisers some models which hook up to your PC and show a film of the route and some which have virtual landscapes and some which allow multiplayer cycling races. However, the literature is not the clearest so I am wondering if anyone here knows how the range works and...

    Hairy Bikers Kedgeree

I adapted this recipe from the Hairy Bikers to make it more suitable for a low GI and low calorie diet. It really only involves swapping their rice for parboiled brown rice and using a low fat yoghurt rather than their double cream. Morrisons do a parboiled brown rice. Brown rice generally has...
