Oh, thank you, whoever you are!
To be honest, I do not know what to answer. On the one hand, I am an IT specialist and any technical part does not pose difficulties for me, but on the other hand, I am very bad at English and if I turn off the translator, I will understand less than half and it seems to me that competent speech is important for a moderator. Besides, I don't really like to communicate with people and my oral speech is very full of obscene words. I know a little about T1 (mostly about my T1, which turns 19 tomorrow :) ), but I know practically nothing about T2, which is the majority on the forum... and... to be honest, I am not sure that according to the laws of my country I am not in danger of criminal liability for this.

Hi,

I’ve just had a secret nomination from a member that wishes to anonymously suggest.

@MrsA2 @Zhnyaka @shelley262 & @DJC3 .
Thank you for the nomination - I love taking part in the forum and really appreciate all the work our amazing moderators do - thank you so much. But my current caring responsibilities are, I feel, still too demanding for me to stand for election as a moderator. I no longer care for mum but her death has had a big impact not just on me, I'm still grieving, but others in the family and my adult autistic son in particular.
It's something I'd be keen to volunteer for if possible in the future as I have a strong belief in our amazing forum.

Sleep on it before deciding.
I think using a translator will make things more difficult but not impossible, especially because you have enough English to see if the translator says something ridiculous.
On the bad language, just keep it in Russian and off the open forum. ;)

There's no need to know all about all types of diabetes to be a mod either, it's mostly about keeping the forum a safe and friendly place for all. And your IT knowledge could prove very useful.

I'll put you on the Nominations awaiting decision list for now. ;)

Family always comes first!

But I'm very glad to hear it's something you'd like to do in the future, when life gives you a bit more room!

What does moderator work involve at all (except for the obvious "If you see an ad, delete it")? How many hours a day should you spend on this?

Sadly neither my eyesight nor my typing skills have improved since asked last year. It takes me an age to write a reply and would hate to do typo giving the wrong info.
I'll continue to pitch in when I can, but couldn't do it with accuracy and timeliness needed.
Wishing well to all who could.

I thought this would be the case after last year, but please see your nomination as a compliment. :)
I'll move your name to the declined section.

Very good question which needs a well composed answer.
We'll go over it in the team before replying, teamwork makes up a great part of moderating.

We don’t just look for members to tell off, as most behave perfectly within the ethos and rules.

We pick out and remove spam and scams.
We move posts to appropriate threads, with notificaton to OP.
We have moderator rules to guide us in decision making, together with the forum rules which justify all our actions

Recently there is the developing challenge of chat bots, which we are obliged to ban.
The amount of time we spend varies depending on other commitments. Some have much more time spare than others.
Though some moderator actions are taken alone (if you see a post that can't wait while you are the sole moderator online) significant decisions are taken as a team, and all actions are recorded and documented so that they get checked over by other moderators. Every action is accompanied by a report (which is created whenever someone hits that report button).

We even have our own chat thread, plus occasional zoom meetings, but bear in mind that all moderator discussions are confidential, and moderators can't talk about moderator decisions or actions to non moderators. The team aspect is vitally important and one reason why we desperately want some more members to join the group.

I would add, to any member already using the forum and logging in regularly and posting to help others share knowledge and experience you are moderator material already.

So, as we are nearing the end of the nominations phase, please everyone, do consider nominating any member you think will help carry on the work, and keep the forum running smoothly. Or accept the nomination if you have already been nominated. A team of 8-10 will make mean less work for each. That would be appreciated by tired oldies, (i.e. me) ;):)

Thank you, whoever you are! I’m very flattered but I don’t have the tech. No pc/laptop/tablet, which is a deliberate decision on my part after retiring. I just have my phone and I use the app so don’t have all the functionality of the full website.
Good luck to the new (and old )nominees, I’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines.

My thanks for the nomination but I regret I must decline as I'm involved with a committee that reviews documents issued to diabetics and proposals for research projects and this takes up a fair bit of my free time.

I have been involved in that sort of thing for year, and throughout my period as Mod and DCUKMod. You just flex as and when you have the time.

Unless things have changed since I stepped down, there is no formal time commitment required, although protracted absences clearly don't help a team along. Mods are real people, who need to flex and deal with life too, so the roles have to reflect that.

@miahara, I'm absolutely not having a go at you, or anyone else in making this post, but just trying to help explain what gives behind the Mod curtain.

Generally speaking, it is fun!

Is that an offer to nominate yourself for election??? :)

Thanks, @EllieM, but I've had my turn, which I enjoyed enormously, but I could be a real danger, in terms of "in my day", or "we always did it like this".

In my world, I find it best not to go back, but I'd never say never.

Just a question?

Where are the blogs?

Maybe a new mod could find them for me.
They are an invaluable source of people's experience through their journey with diabetes!

unfortunately, that is not something mods deal with. So sorry can’t help. Admin have been working on it, but it is not for discussion in this thread.
