Same evening meal as yesterday: oniony meatballs with (vanned) broadbeans and cubed bacon. :)
Only two meatballs today, they were yesterday's leftovers. Too bad for the dogs, I ate them both, although they got to clean the plate and the frying pan.

It wasn't quite enough, I guess because of todays adventures. First I went for a spontaneous swim with someone from the outdoor swimming group. The water is now 9 °C, and we stayed in longer than I ever had before, I guess some 12 to 15 minutes, talkig with passers by, dog walkers, two guys in a boat fishing, a father and son doing some magnet fishing, very nice!
Diabetes seems to be quite used to this now, just dropping a little, but it does make you hungry of course!

Then there was an unknown cockerel right outside my garden, and we managed to get it in. Very hungry, and quite intimidated by the turkeys and the other 4 cockerels, we'll see how he'll manage. Very pretty too.
But it was yet another activity to make you hungry.

No problem, I had a dessert of a good handful or two of salted cashews, problem solved. :joyful:

Hi @ravensmitten.

When working in the USA, I saw hashed browns advertised for breakfast everywhere. (North America's answer to bubble and squeak I suppose and not recommended for diabetics or waist watchers).

The dish seems to have caught on here in some circles. I prefer a full English myself; without the toast or fried bread obviously.

Hi LivingLightly, hope you're well.

That's the funny thing, I really wasn't expecting it but then looking at the menu online it was on there, must have missed it, I knew about the toast/fried slice and politely declined., though I could have eaten a horrific fried slice!

Increasingly I've seen hash browns as in thing in cafés, esp. with a "big breakfast" or a "builders breakfast", sometimes replacing the chips on those, never been a fan of chips on a breakfast either) probably much easier to offer, although I saw people with chips AND hash browns in there. Not as if we have a tradition of rööschti or stuff like that either so like you say, it's probably been picked up from fast food/American style dining.

It's something I wouldn't have thought would appear on a Full British breakfast, and def. not something I'd have ordered myself in the past. Sometimes these cafes are stingy on the egg or bacon, so I would tend to make up my own breakfast but a few places have stopped offering "extras" too, so maybe I ordered the wrong set as I do have trouble seeing the signs on the walls.

What was weird though is I was compelled to try it, nothing I'm into really. Not missing much there.

I sometimes do those things in small doses, to remind myself why I don't do them. Like, I'll take a look at a daily paper when I'm somewhere that has them for customers, just to reinforce what utter tripe most of it is.

I did used to travel miles out of my way for a decent bubble though when working in different cities, towns and villages, I do miss that.

Had a cold sausage and hummus after an afternoon nap, so that was all I ate today. Like others earlier in the thread slept badly and also had about 4 hours last night, had to catch up. bit of a night owl anyway, which I've had to adjust for family commitments, still gets me on a mad 4ammer in front of the computer now and then, which is probably about as rock and roll as it gets these days.

A homeless cockerel, @Antje77? He's so pretty. Hope he settles in.
With 4 cockerels and counting, I suppose you and your neighbours know what you're in for at dawn!

Not really. I have a strong tendency to stay on my couch, bar things like feeding the animals, getting groceries, cooking, and 3 times a week swimming pool/gym (which is non negotiable or I would skip all the time).
Outdoor swimming has been added to that in the last 4 months, and I tend to include it on this thread to keep me accountable, just like I include cooking, another task I sometimes don't manage.

And yes, sometimes adventures do happen, and when they do I like to make the most of it, both in the experience and in sharing it!
Those small adventures go a long way in preventing me from becoming a complete hermit, and sharing them helps a lot with my chronic depression (which is doing pretty well at the moment, don't worry!).

No cockerel, turkey or goat has ever managed to wake me up so far!
And I called my neighbour-in-the-garden to open the gate from the inside to let the poor thing in while I and neighbour André were herding it from the outside.
He's the one living in a thin walled trailer right next to where all the birds are, so all will be well! :joyful:

On topic: My supermarket finally sold pork scratchings again, so I'm about to go to bed with a book, a bag of pork scratchings, and a tub of aioli to dip. :hungry:

Spicy food which is too hot. Nasty people who have no idea on your life journey but feel the need to comment and be cruel.
Really do hope they sort out the lights. Have you ever considered a full blackout soft sleep mask. We bought them before going to Norway as light nights and worked so well we continued to use them they help with light mornings once we go into Summer!
I think a mask would irritate me. Am still avoiding black out curtains. I am ok with natural light but it is light that shouldn't be there, so to speak. Luck for me lights went off at 11.20 last night. So slept.

I've gone for OMAD today, very low carb, hoping for ketosis - I'm getting around 1.0 in the evenings but have a bit of dawn phenomenon and BG is slightly up first thing, ketones way down. Not to worry, I'm very committed this time!

So, today I thought I'd go with the "veggies first" advice so I had just broccoli to start with, then flat mushrooms coated in mozzerella and some beef slices from a joint I sliced and froze a while back also coated in mozzerella. Also a strong filter coffee with a dash of cream. Now extremely full and can't eat my boiled egg! I'm having the shop bought kefir now in a wine glass, after managing to dribble it down my front trying to spoon it yesterday! I must say it's lovely and I'm not a drinker so it's like having a treat somehow.

Aaaaand.... drumroll.... my kefir grains have awoken!! There are a few on the top with some bubbles, but no separation yet and the liquid is very thin. I didn't need to use the heating pad after all, it seems! I've ordered some more shop bought just in case I hate home made but hoping I will like it because it doesn't come in a plastic bottle.
You home made will also improve with time. Mine went from runny, slightly fizzy milky drink to thick, creamy, sometimes lumpy (the grains) deliciousness.

Two meals today
Mid morning small kefir then two boiled eggs with LC roll then some yoghurt
Dinner hm chicken curry with coriander and mint raita served with LC roti bread also gin with soda water. For pudding lc chocolate brownie
I'm currently trying to work out a place to book for a meal out in Brum mid week. One of our party is a vegan so it's a bit more complex will keep searching!
Fazenda do cater for vegetarians, so maybe worth a call to ask about vegan? I have noticed the messaging on veggies, but never paid too much attention to be honest.

Was up and baking early as it was possible a couple of people would drop in and I had nothing in to offer with a cup of tea or coffee. They didn't come, as it happens. Never mind - Alistair will take them tomorrow. (Coffee and cardamom cakes and unsandwiched custard creams.)

BG started out in the 8's and shot up to 15 after my first cup of tea. Took a correction dose and it is now back down in the 8's.

Food for me? Just a few bits of cheddar and tea so far. I have some big field mushrooms in the fridge so I'll put something in them as stuffing and bake them ... eventually.

Neil bought some hops to make tea with, so we both tried a cup of that. It tasted a bit like camomile tea but had a very bitter after-taste. Not particularly pleasant and very shortly after drinking it, I started to feel sick. I think it was the tea. Something to avoid in future. I don't think Neil liked it either.

Ann, you are such a gracious host to your friends, but wouldn’t it be easier to keep a couple of packets of biccies in the depths of a cupboard and a cake or two in the freezer to get out as they appear? Baking in anticipation must be dispiriting on two counts when you have baked and they don’t arrive.

Cheesey brunch, blitzed up cauli, onion, garlic, tomato, mixed in some garlic and herb boursin when cooking, didn't pre plan and couldn't wait to defrost some chicken or anything else to go with it. Felt it needed a little something extra in the bowl, cupboard/fridge is on the low side as the buses around here last night finish early and I missed it, I'm sure they used to run later as it's a major hospital route over by there too.

They don't run that specific bus on a Sunday either. Was going to go to the further along ALDI because the localish one is a building site at the moment, so missing the convenience, hopefully its being replaced.

Could go to Tesco and pick up a few bits, but last time I did that, one bag came to £30! They are all now express ones around here and the 10p's here and there add up, also they stock less of their own stuff because "premium" brands win the shelf space. going off Tesco stuff anyway, not that ever really been keen on a lot of it, but it's very close so easy to "pop" in for something.

aaanyway, long way around the houses, I found a block of halloumi under a pot of Christmas chutney that was in date, so i fried some up and threw it on my already cheesy cauliflour "rice."

There is stuff here to get by a week or so but last minute unplanned low carb in a pinch to throw with a meal bits, not so much. no hard cheese, eggs, cold meat etc. Have put some chicken out to defrost for dinner.

Today's menu
Its been a meaty day.

Breakfast- leftover cubed beef from last night cut small and mixed with scrambled egg.

Lunch- belly pork (already sold in a sauce but it only brought what I had up to 4 or 5 carbs and my numbers were okish)

Dinner- sirloin and mushrooms with a little peppercorn sauce made by adding cream and peppercorns to the juices in the pan (as suggested by someone here last Sunday, maybe @LivingLightly or @MrsA2 ??)- Yum

My simplest peppercorn sauce is
Cook a streak in butter in a pan . When it's done to your liking, remove the steak and while it's resting, add to the buttery meaty juices in the pan a spoonful or 2 of cream and lots of crushed peppercorns. Heat through then pour over the steak
I do mine that way, except I add a bit of dijon mustard to it as well.

It was @MrsA2 . Thank you @maglil55 . The suggestion worked really well for me. I will try it with added mustard next time!
I do all my sauces just with butter and cream and seasoning to taste. E.g. Mushroom sauce once take pork or steak out to rest add a knob of butter cook mushrooms briefly then add cream. Can also be done without mushrooms just a little butter, cream and seasonings.have also done after frying fish remove fish to keep warm and then add knob of butter and cream - adding a dash of lemon and dill to the sauce.the butter thickens all the sauces along with simmering gently for a few mins.

I'm still on catch-up. Thursday 8 February - bed 6.8 FBG 7.5. AQUA day, but I'm also getting demob happy with half term starting at lunchtime tomorrow.

B. TAG and 2 slices of SRSLY toast with pate. Benecol dairy free.

L. After Aqua - 2 M&S cheesy crackers with wensleydale with cranberries & port salut.

D. SRSLY pizza base made into a margarita. A scoop of vanilla ice cream with 6 raspberries.

Friday 9 February - bed 7.7 FBG 7.6

It's a bit of a mixed up day. Boys were demob happy. I also had physio this morning, so it was school runs and then a mad dive to physio while trying to avoid road works! It was just as bad coming back. After getting the boys home, I had to plan what we were doing for food as the younger grandson had a swimming meet. Having got over his terror of diving from the platform to race, he wanted a cheering group in situ!

B. TAG and 2 slices of SRSLY toast with cheese and onion (which I air fried). Benecol dairy free.

L. A bit of crustless quiche

D. Another slice of SRSLY toast with bacon & egg. CC little chocolate pot with raspberries after the swimming meet.

Grandson did really well. He dived in for his races, tumble turned where required, and took an amazing 10.56 seconds off his 50m breaststroke PB. He also shaved another 6 seconds off his freestyle, which let him see the benefit of tumble turns & a diving start.
