What have you eaten today? (Low carb forum)

Hi Ziggy, it’s lovely to see you back.
Curry for breakfast! I like your style.

Yes your right @Pipp. I have forgiven myself and it was just the one slip up. I actually would have enjoyed it if i wasn't feeling guilty eating it.. Having a bit of a laugh about it now though.

@ianpspurs you sound very fed up. I just think Diabetes levels go up sometimes for no particular reason and its hard to take. But things change and hopefully you will be back in clover before you know it.
Hi @PenguinMum , not fed up just reflecting on a situation that needs to be addressed. Also thanks to @DJC3 @Goonergal and @jayney27.
Took my selves to bed early and had a debate with all of us - IanP cabinet. We decided eat means eat and there will be red lines but I will need a longer transition period. It took 3 years to get to where I am now so I will take next phase slowly as well. Phase 1 will be eating more for enjoyment but at a low carb level. I think exploring keto was a bad idea for me. Too low carb and almost every recipe with the prefix keto was like kriptonite to me. I also think the multi day fasting was a bad idea as I learned I could function for at least 3 days without food so now eating sometimes seems like a sign of weakness.
There may be resignations but this is the plan we have all signed up to - collective Ianp cabinet is reinstated.

Good luck for your new venture, you seem to have identified a plausible reason for your guilty feelings about eating. I hope that having now identified what might be a mental barrier for you it can be moved so that you can enjoy food again. I think we all get a little bit obsessive about the carbs and the BG numbers every now and then. I understand the importance of managing both to retain my current status whilst living with diabetes but I also think it’s important to live life and enjoy life to the best of our ability.

Sounds like a good plan. Enjoying what you eat is key to sustaining this. Agree with @jayney27 its quite easy to flip over into obsession. I’m fortunate that Keto suits me perfectly and I genuinely enjoy this way of eating. For me the challenge is not slipping back into over eating and allowing myself to focus on weight maintenance rather than expecting constant loss. Really hope your new plan works out.

Thanks @Goonergal and @jayney27 Methinks I also need some more accurate tools. Tee2 meter does not match as well for Hba1c as previous ones - but I have thrown those away and didn't record what they were. Also looking at carb values from @shelley262's booklet against what I use they are lower for veggies that would suit me fine. 200 gms each of spinach, cauliflower and broccoli would suit me fine for a meal and based on the numbers in the booklet be about 12.6 gms carb. I am perfectly happy with that.
Edit: I would also like a similar veg heavy salad at lunchtime for peace of mind re veg intake.

Glad to hear the Ianp cabinet has come up with a sensible plan ‘going forward’.
I agree with the others: it can be easy to become obsessed but enjoyment of what you’re eating is the key to long term success.
Taking the next phase slowly is very good advice from your internal ministers- it’s not a race to the finishing line after all. This is life and it’s good.

Welcome back @ziggy_w you've been missed. Zucchini and carrot cake? Do tell?

@ianpspurs if you enjoy cauliflower and broccoli you might like this recipe? 11g carbs per serving
https://www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/low-carb-cauliflower-cheese/servings/2
Thanks @Rachox I do make something similar. One big issue chez nous is that Mrs P needs a fodmap kind of diet and cauliflower is apparently not good on that. However, that recipe would give me a meal. I am also very wary of anything that has diet doctor as a source but that one seems none too alternative for me.

Hi Ian pleased you are starting to find a way forward. Carb content taken from supermarket nutrition websites I looked at several to make sure mainly Waitrose and Tesco so instead of price match it was carb match. Out of interest nut carb counts seem to be widest variation. I’m absolutely sure you Are on right path eating lots of veggies but sticking to low carb varieties. The fodmap makes it more complex I love cauli would hate to have to exclude the food map stuff too as would be very restrictive on top of the carb stuff too!

Thanks @shelley262. I also use Waitrose for nutrition but for some reason the fitbit food analysis section has stopped allowing me to edit or add foods/values. Real pain as I had complete menus stored which need to be modified.
Re enjoyment of food that others have alluded to - don't get me wrong I would like to enjoy my food but I am absolutely bloody minded enough to ignore pleasure if that is what it takes.

Catch up for yesterday while the boys are quiet post breakfast. Bed 4.7 FBG 5.2. Dropped boys at school as normal for Friday half day, straight to physio for my regular torture session. Right arm causing problems again but physio reckons I've irritated the rotator cuff again with my exertions with the rug doctor followed by weights and stretches twice weekly. He's suggested I ease up on the heavier weights and we'll see how things are in 4 weeks. Back just in time to pick up boys from school as DIL parents are here from USA and they're all away until tomorrow so we have the boys.
B. What's that? Had time for usual Tassimo Americano grande with a dash of cream.
L. Don't know what that is either. Had two small boys "starving" after school to feed plus a Hubby that didn't know what he wanted. Also multi tasking and making requested dinner for later which was Nana's macaroni & bits for boys/hubby. The 'bits' consists of whatever I have. Yesterday was bacon, mushroom, tomato, peas and broccoli in a traditional Mac n cheese. Left me with the thought of what to have myself.
Boys have been doing sleep training and it works! 7:45pm and both were asleep so I was able to opt for
3 of these Costco sausages done in the George, 2 fried eggs and 4 mini plum tomatoes. Small amount of Halo Top (only about 2 spoonfuls left), 6 raspberries and another of these Breyers choc ice.
Boys slept until 6.15 am and seem to have been eating constantly since then. M

@ianpspurs . Hi are you having some problems food wise or is it to do with your blood levels. Please don't think me a sticky beak but you seem down.... Well for me B. Grilled cheese and tomato on my homemade almond bread. L. Quiche no flour and a tin of salmon with it. Dinner will be chicken and salad. I am also wondering about a change but still LC. Was actually thinking of a sort of vegetarian but not strictly, fish is always a go and maybe missing lunch isn't that great for me so am experimenting at the mo. Before the diagnose i was really never a big meat eater, my husband was,is. I will always still stick to the LC vegies ext as i could never have rice, pasta, breads, cereals and so on so it's going to be a work in progress me thinks.

@ianpspurs glad to hear the cabinet met and came up with a plan. I have no problem eating vegetarian eitherbut do you think excluding meat might make a difference or is that still at the consultation stage.

Oh, there will be meat @PenguinMum. I was just working out the veggie carbs to accompany the meat or fish or cheese and eggs.
