What have you eaten today? (Low carb forum)

@shelley262 and @DJC3 - I'm certainly not dismissing the impacts of fish oil on anyone's health or wellbeing, but in this hacienda, we've had some curious impacts from starting a sublingual B12 supplement.

In August MrB had a very wide blood panel done by Medichecks. His results were excellent, with the reporting Dr commenting he appears to be in exceptional health, but then commented that, his B12 whilst in range, was lower than he might have expected, based on his other results. To be fair it was probably in the lower 20% or range.

I looked at my most recent results and mine were similarly in range, but in the lower reaches, so we both started on a B12 supplement.
Within about 6 weeks one of his golf buddies asked him what he'd been doing because he seemed much more flexible and looked very well. For myself, I had been at my GP late spring to talk about hair drop. I didn't have any bald spots, but my hair had definitely thinned. I now have bonkers regrowth!

To be honest, having got the "in range" on my own B12, I put the hair drop down to other events.

Anyway, anyway, I wonder if MrShelley has also had any kind of benefit from the B12.

I've been astonished myself. Delighted and astonished and it has been a very valuable reminder that "in range" doesn't mean optimal, or sometimes even "good enough" for any given individual at any given time of their life.

The body is a miraculous thing, but it doesn't half mess with our minds at times!

I tried to copy this to my CMT account to not forget, but the recipe was so simple that CMT didn't recognise it as a recipe! :hilarious:
CMT also wanted to add @Rachox chilli with cauliflower rice as the picture to go with it!
Nothing that couldn't be resolved with a bit of copy and pasting thought. :)

Today should have been the other half of my stuffed bell pepper with something, no idea what, likely a slice of lc bread or such.
I posted on facebook about missing my dad and my dog, who died 9 and 4 years ago today. This morning I found it hard to choose between using my dads mug and the one I associate with my dog, and felt rather smug when I decided to use both! I drink more than one mug of coffee anyway, and at 46 years old I'm perfectly allowed to decadently dirty two mugs in one day if I want to!

Two of my friends commented they miss my father's onion soup. It's about the easiest soup in the world to make and I didn't really feel like eating the bell pepper anyway.
So I had a lovely bowl of (heart)warming soup instead, with lots of melted cheese. :joyful:

Just dug the recipe for your Dad's onion soup out from my recipe file. I'd forgotten how good it was but you've reminded me. I'll make some of that tomorrow.

Totally agree 're B12 mr Shelley is also on high dose b12 drops and they may be making a lot of the improvement. A mix of improving b12 and the fish oil is recommended by Patrick halford for cognition and as we started both and seen an improvement we are continuing with both. I take a smaller dose of both and improved my hair too. We use sub lingual drops which are pricey but well worth investment for us and we won't be stopping either any time soon. It's our morning routine with our Kefir.

@DJC3 pork crunch came today but looking at the nutritional analysis I'll try some another day due to sodium/salt level. Two mugs of tea? Make a big pot and use a 750 mls mug :D
I'm happier with the food and analysis today.
Tea and 2 x babybel
Taster of Stichelton cheese (new one to me but will pick up some more Friday when we collect the main meat, cheese and fish order) CWC . JKP may have muddled kgs and Lbs (3 kgs Porchetta seems excessive but looks spiffing)
Avocado, 2 x XL poached eggs and mackerel plus smaller i.e. normal/sports direct sized mug of tea
Swordfish (not planned but looked splendid) salad with toasted pine nut topping - Water. Also bought a trout - fishmonger filleted that so 2 nice feelays, Yeehaw.

Welcome back @ravensmitten .
@shelley262 and @AndBreathe I’m fascinated by both your experiences. It had never occurred to me that B12 might be a helpful supplement as well as fish oil (I’ve ordered that Norwegian one) as I eat a lot of meat so assumed that’d cover it. My hair is definitely thinning - it used to be very thick, I assumed it was yet another effect of ageing.
Today’s food - the usual black coffees, thank heaven I’d had these before we had a power cut. It lasted several hours, the electricity co insisted there was no power outage at our postcode but eventually sent a man out who confirmed we had no power! There was work going on in another location which apparently shouldn’t have affected us, the man said we’d get a £30 goodwill refund.
Lunch was cold for obvious reasons - tin of mackerel, h/b egg, avocado and h/m coleslaw. KC Mince pie traybake &cream.
Dinner - slow cooked lamb shanks ( very slow cooked as it turned out. @Annb I was wishing I had one of those hay bags to keep it cooking). Green beans and chard. Red wine, Camembert and walnuts to follow IMG_1703097759.038715.jpg

Evening all

Today:

B: Two poached eggs topped with a knob of butter, avocado and four tiger prawns seasoned with a good grinding of black pepper.
Water to swallow tablet.
Espresso.

L: Mushroom stroganoff made with chestnut mushrooms, dried porcini mushrooms, onions, vegetable stock, tomato purée, paprika, garlic, olive oil, butter, parsley and soured cream.
Cauliflower rice with toasted cashews and peas.
Braised cavolo nero with garlic and toasted almonds.
Skipped pud.
Water to drink.

D: Seafood salad made with brown shrimps and mussels, lettuce, Romano peppers, celery, baby plum tomatoes, Halkidiki olives and salad onions, with a dollop of home-made aioli for dipping, topped with pecan halves.
Water to swallow tablets.

Woke at silly o'clock again but somehow didn't get round to breakfast until after 11. Just ff greek and seeds, but then about 12:30 hubby brought home hot chicken thighs from the supermarket. I had one.

D: last nights mince, this time on buttered cabbage and leek. A white wine and soda. Then about 15g carbs of chocolate in various forms.

Wrapping in a duvet can mimic the haybox effect. We had a Mr D's thermal cooker on our boat. The beauty for that circumstance is not having to have gas on (for that) when passage making and not in the galley.

Honestly, my GP's response to our clogged shower trap was it's age. Try Amla, or accept is an impact of aging. Sometimes I wonder how he has survived this long. :)

We use a sublingual dispersable tablet. We're sticking with it too.

Both @shelley262 and @DJC3 - you know this already probably, but should you elect to take a B supplement of any kind, please check whether or not it contains biotin (they often do). Nothing wrong with biotin, except it can skew some blood test results. If you take biotin, you need to lay off it for at least 72 hours before a blood test.

Just realised that I posted today's food on the wrong thread, so it's this:

Breakfast: A pear and 2 RyVitas with cheese.

2nd meal: will be cold sausage with scrambled eggs and shredded Brussels sprouts.

I've just made some mini Christmas puddings to put in the freezer (about 2 mouthfuls each) for guests. Not a traditional recipe this late on, but one using my mincemeat and breadcrumbs to lighten them up a bit.

Ferries are off again today and possibly right through to the weekend - there went Christmas dinner for quite a few folk. Christmas presents which should have come in time, now won't. Our Christmas dinner might be a little unusual, but that's OK - we're not all that bothered by tradition and, failing all else, there's bound to be something in the freezer. My Christmas presents are all done and wrapped, ready to go. Just cash gifts for the grown-ups to organise and the bank won't run out of that. Feeling sorry for those who haven't managed to get their Christmas shopping done - for many people it is quite important. Don't imagine the shops will run out of booze though, so some people will be happy enough.
--------------------------------------------------------
2010: Also made a batch of bread pudding. As soon as it cools I must get it into the freezer or I might be tempted by it.

Just had a phone call from my cleaner. She has been very ill but has recovered and has been back at work for the last 4 days. She will come and do my floors on Friday morning. Thank goodness for that. Also won't have to find someone else to give Christmas presents to which are intended for her and her children. Main thing, of course, is that she's allright.

What a day.
Yesterday at 11pm a friend who lives down the road texted me that her partner of 20 years broke up with her so I figured she could use some company and a drink and invited her.
That lasted until 3:30 am, when we both really, really had enough to drink.

So today was pretty hungover, but proud to say I still went to the gym for a serious workout. After that it was a quick swim in the cold canal (which got rid of the last bits of my hangover), followed by eating out with a friend. :)
This meant not quickly donning a bathrobe after swimming, but wrestling myself into proper clothes in the pouring rain in a dark parking lot. :hilarious:

Delicious food, and just slightly higher carb than at home. My friend doesn't eat meat, and the restaurant takes vegetarian and even vegan food just as serious as the meat options so the place perfectly catered for the combination of our wishes. :joyful:
I'd never eaten in an Afghan restaurant before so I had no idea what to expect, turned out a very nice surprise!

First 'dogh', a slightly salty yoghurt based drink with mint and cucumber, with a flavour that reminded a little of feta, very tasty!

1703106631131.png

Mains was three different meat dishes, all very tasty, a very good salad, and a spicy green chutney (which is hiding behind the salad).
I only had a taste of the rice an the bread, and avoided most of the potato in the beef curry. Still more than enough food to fill me up. :)

1703106841433.png

I skipped dessert, as it were sweet options only, but my friend had a baklava of which I had a nibble, yum!
The surprisingly competent young waiter (looked 15, can't have been older than 20) offered two forks with one dessert so I explained I had diabetes so no sweet dessert for me.
We shared a cardamom tea, and the waiter had decided to not put a sugar sachet next to my glass, which I think was very thoughtful, especially in a busy restaurant.

Thank you @AndBreathe for your info on biotin. I've been taking it everyday for the past 3- 4 months as my hair is getting thinner too. I've normally got a lot of hair, not thick, but loads and it's now gone alarmingly thin. It's like I'm in competition with our Rusty, a 40kg very hairy German Shep who only sheds once a year, trouble is the shedding last for 365 days! I've lost hair before when I've keto'd. I'm now thinking I'll pinch some of my husband's B12 till after Christmas. He has been taking them as his haemoglobin is low, yet his iron is sky high - bit of a conundrum but he's complicated. He's got lymphoma, and also haemochromatosis. He has been feeling loads better taking his fish oils and b12 supplements, the result has been so positive in his demeanour.

This morning was a hospital day for my husband, and we didn't get back home till after 12 noon. After settling down I had 2 slices of back bacon with a couple of chaffles and a mug of coffee frothed with cream.

Dinner was bits and bobs, a chicken thigh, one pork chipolata, handful of walnuts, and a very small portion of Bolognese.

4 squares of 90% Lindt chocolate.

Gosh @Antje77 you live such an exciting life. Hope your friend is now ok, what a horrible thing to go through at Christmas.

... I didn't have any bald spots, but my hair had definitely thinned. I now have bonkers regrowth!
I had beautiful thick chestnut hair, but now, it is incredibly thin, so much so, I've changed my style to a comb over. Not quite a Bobby Charlton, but that could be a thing if I don't have it cut again, doesn't help that I'm going white either. :hilarious: I take B12, so that's not doing anything for me. I've always put it down to going through the change very early at 25/26, it was being investigated but I then had my accident & it went out the window. The back ops were the final nail which I was thankful for one side of it, but never bothered with the hormone side, so I've put it down to that. Really pleased for you that you have really good regrowth.

So, best add my dinner, well....I was taken out to enjoy the city Xmas lights & the festive atmosphere, which was lovely. My folks that took me were getting a takeaway pizza on the way home from their favourite joint. I wouldn't eat pizza, as not something I care for, plus the carbs, sooo...I was treated to some KFC. :hilarious: Just the bone in chook, nothing else. I was astounded that the coffee I had when out probably put me up further than the KFC. Very happy with 6.6, actually, shocked, was probably a duff stick. Anyway, it was a rare, enjoyable treat. I know, not everyone's taste, but...
