Breakfast: 2 buttered crumpets (I know, I know, but I just wanted them). BG has dropped since I had them anyway.

2nd meal: will be shepherd's pie using some of the roast lamb and swede mash for the topping.

I believe Em is back at school today after her "melt-down". She was very well aware of the danger the operation posed to her mum and was seriously worried. She didn't let anyone know how worried she was. It was the surprise of seeing her mum back, safe and well(ish) that brought all her anxieties to a head, causing what her dad called a "melt-down".

Evening all

B: Two poached eggs with a knob of butter and avocado seasoned with black pepper, plus a wedge of Duckett's Caerphilly.
Water to swallow tablet.
Espresso.

Today: we helped a friend to celebrate her birthday (well, somebody has to) with a festive lunch at her favourite eatery.

L: Aperitif: gin on the rocks with a slice of lemon.
Prawns piccantes sautéed with tomato and basil, garlic and chilli.
Side salad of lamb's lettuce, tomato, cucumber and taggiasca olives dressed with vinaigrette.
Water to drink.
Roast pheasant with lashings of luscious gravy (did somebody mention port?)
At least, the cranberry sauce was served separately.
Steamed carrot batons, broccoli and French beans.
Spinach with garlic and butter plus deep fried zucchini matchsticks, some of which I swapped for extra spinach.
Skipped pud.
Cappuccino
Brandy on the house.

D: None of us was really hungry, but made a seafood salad using mussels, brown shrimps, lettuce, baby plum tomatoes, celery, Romano peppers, Kalamata olives, mint and salad onions, dressed with an olive oil, balsamic and garlic vinaigrette, topped with roasted macadamia nuts. It all disappeared.
Water to swallow tablets.

Pretty uneventful day today, unless it counts that I gave the washing machine one of its twice a year service cleans. A pretty boring event I'll grant you, though nice now it's done.

Two rashers of back bacon, 2x XL fried eggs, 4 sauteed mushrooms, and just to capture that exciting feeling of living on the edge, I threw caution to the wind and had a small slice (50g) of hm sourdough toast with lashings of butter. Pleased to add it didn't take long before BG was back to a decent level.

Around mid day had a coffee with cream, later enjoyed a G&T.

Dinner was 2x chicken thighs that had been marinated and then cooked in Greek yoghurt, lemon juice and Pataks tikka paste. Served with Cauli and diced swede rice.

2x squares of 90% Lindt chocolate.

I've been MIA for a couple of days, despite having promised to update you on the Sinterklaas surprise and food.
Something to do with a somewhat broken car, a lot of pain in my neck making me lose sleep, and annoying stuff with GP, insurance, pharmacist and rheumatologist making me not up for posting.

First, thank you for all your lovely compliments on my surprise!
It did survive the ride over there, and I must have annoyed the heck out of at least 25 drivers by taking roundabouts and bumps at 3 miles an hour, going from 0 to 60 in 5 minutes, and starting to slow down way before taking corners.

I received wonderful poems and a yucky surprise myself, having to search for my presents in a cardboard WC filled with a mixture of gingerbread and water. My friend greatly enjoyed buying 5 loaves of gingerbread for a diabetic, without it messing with my BG. :hilarious: I also had to follow a trail in the rain to find my surprise!

Food was wonderful: First an adaptation of low carb tuna melt muffins made with smoked salmon. Dangerously delicious! Forgot to make a picture though. Then a roll up thing of carrot with salmon and cream cheese, can also recommend. Both of those were made by my friend.
Main course was mussels cooked in wine with some onion, celery, leek and garlic, with various mayo based dipping sauces. A mustard sauce, a lemon sauce, a garlic sauce and an experimental Branston pickle and mayo sauce with some extra lemon for zing.

My friend comes from Germany originally, and during the meal we found out that the Dutch and Flemings have their mussels with (usually mayo or vinegar based) sauces, while the Germans don't usually dip their mussels.

So now I have two questions:
- Do people in the UK dip their mussels?
- Is mixing Branston with mayo a thing or did I just invent a very tasty dipping sauce? (No Branston in my country, my pot was brought from the UK.)

And for completeness, I had cauliflower cheese with fried onion and chorizo today and yesterday.

Thank you @ianpspurs I am indeed in N. Cambridgeshire and hopefully not contagious! Itching calming down, think antihistamines kicking in. @Antje77 would in a non-diabetic world dip the fries in mayo based sauces not the mussels. Ooh and @MrsA2 coffee ice cream with Baileys, double yum!
Back to my boring meals,yesterday
B Yog, rapberries and flaked coconut
L Scrambled egg and mushrooms on Livlife toast
D Chilli con carne with shredded cabbage

No reason not to dip mussels in a sauce although I've never heard of it being done. If you enjoy them that way, why not? If I could get fresh mussels here, I'd try it and see.

Also, never heard of mixing mayo with Branston but you can certainly mix mayo with lots of things without comment (tomato ketchup, curry spices, herbs, yoghurt for example) so Branston sounds like a good idea. Might try it. Dressing for coleslaw maybe?

Lots of things to use up over the next few days - cold roast lamb, shepherd's pie made from it (not a great success, tasted OK but it just wasn't shepherd's pie), chicken thighs, lorne sausage going out of date, mushrooms past their date, cooked Brussels sprouts. The idea of Bubble and Squeak is presenting itself to go with a fried egg or so. Then maybe lamb tagine later. Chicken and mushrooms will wait until tomorrow.
