According to analysis of a number of clinical trials by research teams at the University of Sydney and the University of Oxford, statin drugs could reduce stroke and heart risks amongst diabetics, and should play a greater role in diabetes treatment throughout the world.
The research teams conducted the most in-depth review to date, and found that statins did provide health benefits to diabetics with metabolic disorders affecting the regulation of blood sugar .
The study, published in medical journal The Lancet, could persuade doctors to prescribe statins to diabetics. The heart drugs, popular in the 1980s, included Lipitor (Pfizer) and Crestor (AstraZeneca).
A co-author of the report, Professor Colin Baigent, reportedly commented: "People with diabetes are at a substantially higher risk of cardiovascular disease . Young or old, woman or man, overweight or not, all people we studied would benefit from a statin."
