A fresh study published in the journal Nature Medicine, reveals that a team of international scientists has found a clear link between type 2 diabetes and the accumulation of cholesterol.
Using mice, the scientists found that pancreatic beta cells start to lose their function as cholesterol levels increase. Using genetically engineered mice, the researchers (from the Vancouver Child and Family Research Institute at University of British Columbia) investigated the effects of turning off cholesterol transport ABCA1.
The results indicated that mice faced lower levels of insulin secretio, and also impaired glucose tolerance, effectively rendering them type 2 diabetic . They also found cholesterol accumulated in the pancreatic beta cells.
One of the experts in charge of the study, Dr. Hayde, indicted that future studies this year would focus on whether cholesterol regulation problems could be the origin of type 2 diabetes amongst humans.
