Diet influences diabetes risk in teens

According to diabetes news reports, even minor dietary adjustments can make a difference to diabetes amongst overweight Latino adolescents. The findings were revealed in the Archives of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine .

A team from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, analysed diet data amongst 66 overweight Latino teens. The teens were divided into groups who were given varying levels of nutrition and education.

The researchers reportedly commented: "Given that the (comparison) group demonstrated similar dietary changes as the intervention groups, our results suggest that intensive interventions may not be necessary to achieve modifications in sugar and fiber intake. Accordingly, nutritional guidance given in the primary care or community setting may be sufficient to promote the suggested dietary changes in some individuals."
