An annual minority health summit will this year focus on diabetes . Headlined by former US Surgeon General David Satcher, the Greenvilla Hospital System fourth minority health summit will focus on diabetes prevention .
The event will include panel discussions as well as breakout sessions on high blood pressure and heart disease, stroke, nutrition and portion control. Diabetes is known to be the sixth leading cause of death in South Carolina. Community outreach co-ordinator for GHS, Melinda Hudson, reportedly commented: "African-Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans as well are high-risk ethnic populations for diabetes . With the rate of diabetes being so high in South Carolina, it's one of our major focuses."
