The FreeStyle InsuLinx blood glucose monitor from Abbott Laboratories is now available to diabetes patients in Australia.
The device, which was launched in the UK earlier this year, includes a mealtime (bolus) insulin calculator for suggested bolus insulin injection doses based on the user’s insulin to carbohydrate ratio, with readings displayed on a user-friendly touchscreen display.
It also comes with an automated logbook, weekly messages and pre and post-meal markers, and USB connectivity for plug-and-play reports via the new FreeStyle Auto-Assist data management software, which is compatible with both PC and Mac.
The InsuLinx blood glucose monitoring system does require users to have knowledge on their dosages and carbohydrate-to-insulin ratio for correct usage, which can make it slightly challenging to get to grips with, especially for people who are new to diabetes. However, the monitor’s pre-programmed guides are designed to help users with this.
Diabetes mellitus is a rowing health concern in Australia, with more than 3.6 million people across the country estimated to be living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, or pre-diabetes.
Of those, most type 1 diabetics (and some type 2 diabetics) require insulin injections on a daily basis to manage their condition.
