According to recent research, a recent study using animals shows that cognitive impairment amongst diabetics could be linked to high levels of the stress hormone cortisol .
Diabetes has many complications, and is known to affect many organs within the body. In the brain, diabetes can cause cognitive impairment. A research team led by Dr. Mark Mattson of Princeton University in New Jersey was published in the research journal Nature Neuroscience .
The team based their research on diabetic rats, and their conclusions are that diabetes can damage the memory. Mattson was reported by Reuters Health to have commented: “From a basic science standpoint, it will be important to identify the specific mechanisms by which cortisol adversely affects learning and memory.”
