According to an international team of researchers, the latest study indicates that taking an aggressive approach to controlling blood sugar levels amongst type 2 diabetics does not lead to an increased risk of death, directly contradicting studies reported earlier this week in the diabetes news .
A large US trial had to be halted by the government last week, after many deaths caused by tightly controlling blood sugar levels . This study, known as Accord, indicates a greater risk of death.
However, the large-scale study Advance indicates that tightly controlling blood sugar does not include a risk of death. An expert involved in the study, Rory Collins from the University of Oxford, reportedly commented: “The interim results from Advance provide no confirmation of the adverse mortality trend reported from the Accord study.”
