Recent reports claim that over 70 million people are now suffering from either diabetes of impaired fasting glucose in the US. Further statistics highlight the problem in even more stark terms .
According to analysts of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), data indicates that one in every three individuals has diabetes, and 26 per cent have impaired fasting glucose. Despite increases in prevalence, levels of the disease going undiagnosed have remained the same. The known problem, as always, is just the tip of the iceberg .
One expert from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in Bethseda was reported as saying: “Despite public health messages, we’re not finding a counterbalance of fewer people with undiagnosed diabetes.”
The study team expect that approximately one third of diabetics remain undiagnosed, the lead author claiming: “we were surprised by the fact that diagnosed diabetes is increasing, We need to do a better job of diagnosing those one in three who don’t know they have it (diabetes) and finding those with impaired fasting glucose.”
