According to a new study, corn syrup high in fructose could be directly linked to diabetes. The specific type of corn syrup, known as HFCS, may have a role to play in the development of diabetes, particularly amongst children and young people.
A lab study conducted in America found that drinks containing this type of syrup also contained reactive compounds that could trigger tissue and cell damage. Sodas and fizzy drinks, available from almost every newsagent and vending machine around the country, could be having a major impact on children.
HFCS is used as a sweetener in many foods and drinks. Many companies use it because it is economical, very sweet, and easy to mix. The compound may also contribute to obesity development, an opinion confirmed by the laboratory study.
Researcher Chi-Tang Ho reportedly commented: “People consume too much high-fructose corn syrup in this country. It’s in way too many food and drink products and there’s growing evidence that it’s bad for you.”
