A growing trend amongst teenage girls is causing concern amongst the diabetic community . Young female diabetics could be skipping their insulin in order to lose weight, in a process known as ‘diabulimia.’ In doing so, they could be causing long-term damage to their bodies .
The consequences of uncontrolled diabetes are enormous, with risks to many major organs. Diabulimia is typically a problem for young women and could be growing in scale. According to one expert, it could be affecting as many as 450,000 type 1 diabetic women in the US.
Ann Goebel-Fabbri, a clinical psychologist at the Joslin Diabetes Center, reportedly commented: “People who do this behaviour wind up with severe diabetic complications much earlier.”
Symptoms for diabulimia could include changed eating habits, low energy, and frequent urination.
