Salsalate, a well-known pain killing drug, could help people with type 2 diabetes to control their blood glucose levels. According to a recent study, salsalate lowered blood sugar levels and helped people with diabetes to gain glycaemic control . However, the drug may damage kidney function, as it has been known to increase protein in the urine.
Just like aspiri, salsalate is an anti-inflammatory drug and it is often used to treat arthritis patients. Salsalate is very similar to aspiri, due to the active ingredient salicylate. At this stage, a research team at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston are hesitating to recommend the drug as a type 2 diabetes treatment.
The research team were reported as commenting: “Because of salsalate’s anti-inflammatory effects, our results suggest that inflammation plays a role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and that anti-inflammatory therapy may be useful for treating diabetes “.
