According to global diabetes news reports, the Agave plant, commonly used in the potent alcoholic beverage tequila, could help people with diabetes to manage their condition. Furthermore, the plant could help people with osteoporosis.
A research team in Mexico found that a diet rich in the fructans found within the plant could help to improve the way bone tissue grows, as well as stimulating the production of GLP-1 hormone. GLP-1 promotes the release of insulin .
The head of the research team at CINVESTAV, Mercedes Lopez, pointed out that drinking tequila would not provide the same health benefits. This is because fructans lose their effect during the fermentation process.
The research will now progress to a second stage before the agave is tested on humans, but it may become a diabetes treatment in the future.
