According to a physician at John Hopkins university, a blood test that is currently used to monitor people already under diabetes care could also have a great role to play in diagnosing thousands who currently have undetected diabetes .
Undiagnosed diabetes is a major problem, as the longer a person has diabetes and doesn’t manage it property, the more likely long-term complications are to occur. Currently, the HbA1c test establishes how well people with diabetes are managing their blood sugar levels .
A professor of endocrinology and metabolism at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine, and also the Director of the John Hopkins Comprehensive Diabetes Center, Christopher Saudek, reportedly commented: "The test is a measure of long-term glucose control, but doctors don't typically use it to screen for or diagnose the disease. There's reason to believe it could help identify many of the estimated six million people in the U.S. who have diabetes but don't know it."
