According to a recent study in the latest edition of Clinical Medicine, pressure on consultants to support internal medicine services could be compromising diabetes care in the UK.
Apparently, specialist diabetes consultants spend more time supporting other areas of acute-general internal medicine services. The study indicates that diabetes specialists could have less time available for diabetes care, despite an overall increase in number of consultants.
The authors of the study, published by the Royal College of Physicians, state that more time needs to be given by physicians to meet increasing diabetes prevalence in the UK.
Diabetes healthcare in the UK often comes under criticism by UK diabetics, and many experts believe that the UK has a postcode lottery of Primary Care Trusts that vary considerably in quality of care.
