According to fresh research, seaweed could help in curing diabetes . A research team from MicroIslet Inc, San Diego, have found that the coating on seaweed could have a role to play in curing diabetes.
The substance, known as Alginate, can be extracted from seaweed. Cells taken from pigs are wrapped in the substance, and together they are injected into a diabetic patient. The immune system, which would usually destroy such cells, cannot find them.
The routine, which could open up potential for a diabetes transplant process, involves taking the islet cells from a healthy donor . A spokeswoman for diabetes UK, the leading UK diabetes charity, reportedly commented: "This research may have huge potential. A major limiting factor in the use of either a whole pancreas or islet cell transplant is the lack of available donor organs."
