Northern Ireland may urgently need a diabetes strategy, according to diabetes charity Diabetes UK . A regional strategy to deal with the diabetes problem in Northern Ireland needs to be put on the agenda, with soaring levels of diabetes diagnosis last year.
Diabetes UK Northern Ireland director Iain Foster reportedly commented: "£1m a day is spent on diabetes in Northern Ireland. However, it's currently all in relation to dealing with associated complications later on in life. Scotland, Wales and England all have a regional strategy, Northern Ireland doesn't, and it's still very much an ad hoc approach depending on where you live in NI."
Diabetes in Northern Ireland, like other areas of the world, could be becoming more common because people are living for longer periods of time, gaining more weight and leading more and more indolent lifestyles .
