Fresh research indicates that pumping iron in the gym could play a major and previously unexamined role in preventing both diabetes and obesity . The study found that muscle created by lifting weights helps to regulate the whole bodily metabolism, meaning resistance training could have a greater role in treating and preventing diabetes than previously thought.
Conventionally, diabetes literature indicates that aerobic endurance exercise is the key to regulating metabolism. This builds muscle known as type 1, whilst lifting weights promotes the growth of type 2 muscle. By researching with mice, the researchers showed that those with type 2 muscle became metabolically normal.
The research team, whose findings were published in journal Cell Metabolism, reportedly commented: “These data … suggest that strength training, in addition to the widely prescribed therapy of endurance training, may be of particular benefit to overweight individuals.”
