According to a recent diabetes study based in Ottawa, a genetic reaction to wheat and other foods could impact on the immune system and make the body more likely to developed immune issues, including type 1 diabetes .
The discovery could prompt further research and open up treatment horizons for people with diabetes . Dr. Scott of Ottawa Hospital Research Institute was reported as commenting: “Our research suggests that people with certain genes may be more likely to develop an over-reaction to wheat and possibly other foods in the gut and this may tip the balance with the immune system and make the body more likely to develop other immune problems, such as type 1 diabetes.”
The discovery suggests that people with certain genes could face greater likelihood of over-reacting to wheat in the gut. A wheat-free diet has been shown to lower diabetes development risk amongst animals.
