According to an international research team, a new type of gene variant could influence fasting blood glucose levels via melatonin metabolism . The gene is closely associated with increased blood glucose levels and a higher risk of type 2 diabetes .
The new finding could potentially enhance diabetes treatment possibilities, taking treatment horizons beyond currently used symptomatic therapy approaches for diabetes treatment .
To reach their conclusions, the MAGIC Consortium (Meta Analyses of Glucose and Insulin -related traits Consortium) analysed data from 13 difference case-control studies, with over 18,000 diabetic participants.
The results of the study were published in the January issue of journal Nature Genetics .
