There are recomendations for diabetics as to when the diabetics should get their eyes checked and how often.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Diabetic Associatio, the following routine has to be followed.
If diabetes is detected before the paitent hits 30 years of age, the initial in-depth eye test should be carried out 5 years after diagnosis. Thereafter a less in depth eye test is recommended on an annual basis.
If diabetes is detected after 31 years the eye test should be carried out at the time diagnosis. Thereafter a less in-depth eye test is recommended on an annual basis.
Should a diabetic patient get pregnant, the eyes need be tested within 3 months post conception and every three months thereafter.
There are ways in which a person can tell that their eyes are damaged by diabetes: floating spots, double vision or blurred vision.
